The paper deals with the internal syntactic structure of deverbal -nje nominals in Serbian. The tests from the licensing of event-related modifiers (by-phrases and instrumental DPs) support the ...hypothesis that -nje nominals are derived from passive participles by adding the suffix -je (Marvin 2002; Simonović & Arsenijević 2014). Building on Simonović & Arsenijević (2014), I further observe that the licensing of referential and non-referential event modifiers exhibits a complex set of correlations with the aspectual properties of the base, phonological faithfulness to the base, and semantic compositionality. Semantic opacity and phonological unfaithfulness do not always go hand in hand, and I treat them as two separate components of a process of lexicalization, which is syntactically constrained (Marantz 1997). I argue that the presence of full VoiceP structure including a v 0 referring to an event diagnosed by the licensing of referential event modifiers (Alexiadou et al. 2014) constitutes a phase, which blocks lexicalization. This structure is present in -nje nominals derived from secondary imperfectives, which always license referential event modifiers and exhibit semantic compositionality and phonological unfaithfulness. Smaller structures derived from perfectives or primary imperfectives do not license referential event modifiers (hence, they do not constitute a full phase), which is what makes them susceptible to lexicalization.
This paper tackles the phenomenon of hip-hop subculture in Serbia. The goal is to understand its development and to map out its class dimensions and political impulses. The analysis is grounded in ...cultural studies (cf. Hall, 1980). Hip-hop lyrics and symbolism of the hip-hop style are analyzed with a focus on political and class dimensions. The development of hip-hop subculture is divided into two phases. First, during the 1990s, the hip-hop subculture in the Serbian context was in the search for its local identity as a style that originated within the working-class but had its first representatives in Serbia among the middle-class youth. Hip- hop’s dialogue with the dizel culture during this period is indicative of this quest for identity. In the second phase, after 2000, hip-hop finds its place in the Serbian society by grounding itself in the working-class and establishing itself as the heir of the dizel subculture of the nine- ties (Papović and Pejović 2016). It also undergoes internal divisions producing an elitist wing further subdivided into a liberal and conservative part, and an anti-elitist wing with a chaotic political character hosting both radically leftwing and extreme right sentiments.
Quality of life (QoL) after breast cancer surgery is an important public health issue. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the levels of perceived quality of life in ...patients operated on for breast cancer in relation to the type of surgery, using the standardized questionnaires.
We assessed 425 women after surgery for breast cancer. The assessment included the application of the WHOQOL-bref (The World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref), and FACT-B (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast) questionnaires. The statistical analysis of the data included multiple linear regression and correlation tests.
Multiple linear regression analysis found that education, existence of comorbidities, time elapsed since surgery, and type of surgery were significant predictors of overall quality of life. Women's overall quality of life and general health has increased by 0.16 times for each subsequent year of surgery, and by 0.34 times for each subsequent higher education level. Breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy with breast reconstruction were statistically significant (
= 0.18) compared to total mastectomy.
There is a significant difference in the quality of life perceived by patients in whom the breast has been preserved or reconstructed in relation to patients in whom total mastectomy has been performed.
Head and neck melanoma (HNM) is specific from the anatomical and etiopathogenetic aspects. In addition to morphopathological parameters, rich vascularization and lymphatic drainage of the head and ...neck affect the occurrence of lymphogenic and hematogenous metastases, as well as the metastases on both sides of the neck.
A retrospective cross-sectional study included cutaneous melanoma patients who underwent surgery at a clinical center over a 10-year period. The clinical follow-up was at least 60 months. The Kaplan-Meier method was used for the survival analysis. The predictor effect of certain independent variables on a given dichotomous dependent variable (survival) was measured by the Cox regression analysis.
The analysis of demographic and clinical characteristics of 116 patients with HNM revealed that there was no statistically significant difference in age and gender in the total sample. Thirty-three (28.45%) patients were already in stage III or IV of the disease at the first examination, which affected the overall survival rate. The overall 5-year survival was 30.2%. No statistically significant difference in 5-year survival was found in relation to age and location. The period without melanoma progression decreased progressively in the advanced stage. Forty-nine patients (42%) underwent surgery for lymphogenic metastases in the parotid region and/or neck during the follow-up.
Patients with HNM included in this study frequently presented an advanced stage of the disease at the first examination, which is reflected in a low rate of 5-year survival. Early diagnosis and adequate primary treatment can ensure longer survival.
Introduction. The arm replantation is an extremely rare and challenging procedure. The recognized risk is myoglobinuria and, consenquently, ischemia reperfusion-induced renal failure. Case report. We ...presented two patients aged 24 and 46 years who were admitted after traumatic arm amputation. Ischemia time was six and two hours, respectively. Postoperative intensive care treatment with assisted ventilation, sedation, and obtaining sufficient urine output prevented myoglobin-induced renal injury. In the case where ischemia time was shorter, there was only one delayed reconstruction of skin defects after fasciotomy, but in the case where ischemia lasted longer, the patient had two secondary look procedures with acceptable definitive results. Conclusion. Arm replantation is a safe procedure even in cases with longer ischemia time. Postoperative control of urine output, correction of acidosis, and preventing myoglobin-induced tubular injury are crucial for stable postoperative recovery and.
The present study aimed to analyze the effects of the addition of blood to the phycogenic bone substitute Algipore® on the severity of in vivo tissue reaction. Initially, Fourier-transform infrared ...spectroscopy (FTIR) of the bone substitute was conducted to analyze its chemical composition. The subcutaneous implantation model in Balb/c mice was then applied for up to 30 d to analyze the tissue reactions on the basis of specialized histochemical, immunohistochemical, and histomorphometrical methods. The data of the FTIR analysis showed that the phycogenic bone substitute material is mainly composed of hydroxyapatite with some carbonate content. The in vivo analyses revealed that the addition of blood to Algipore® had a major impact on both angiogenesis and vessel maturation. The higher vascularization seemed to be based on significantly higher numbers of multinucleated TRAP-positive cells. However, mostly macrophages and a relatively low number of multinucleated giant cells were involved in the tissue reaction to Algipore®. The presented data show that the addition of blood to a bone substitute impacts the tissue reaction to it. In particular, the immune response and the vascularization were influenced, and these are believed to have a major impact on the regenerative potential of the process of bone tissue regeneration.
Metastatic melanoma of unknown primary (MMUP) is already a well described oncologic
phenomenon in the literature, whereas tissue defects’ reconstructions on the neck region always present
a challenge ...for the reconstructive surgeon. Two cases of giant metastatic, skin infiltrative neck tumor
masses are presented. In both cases MMUP was diagnosed. Both intraoperative tissue defects were
reconstructed using pectoralis major (PM) regional flap.
The first patient was admitted with giant tumor mass on the right side of the neck.
The fast growing mass appeared two months prior to the admission. Thorough examination showed no
signs of primary tumor. Removal surgery was performed and the defect was reconstructed using the
PM musculocutaneous flap. The second patient was admitted with large tumor mass on the left side of
the neck. Thorough examination displayed no signs of any primary tumor. After the excision, the tumor
mass and subsequent neck dissection, reconstruction followed, using the pedicled PM muscle flap and
partial thickness skin transplants. There were no major complications in either case. The histopathological
examinations presented metastatic melanoma diagnoses.
Clinical outcome of MMUP described in literature is rather variable. Different studies have
shown that prognosis in patients with MMUP is better than that in patients with diagnosed primary
melanoma with metastatic disease. Therefore, the best initial course of action in those cases would be
surgery, according to oncological principles, if possible. Neck defects’ reconstructions should fulfill both
functional and esthetic demands. Due to the reliability and low cost of the procedure, PM regional flap
presents a very good and trustworthy reconstruction modality.
The paper tackles correlations between prosodic and semantic properties of Serbo-Croatian adjectives with the suffix(es) -ov/-in. A corpus study was performed to identify: (i) the types of bases that ...these suffixes attach to, and (ii) semantic and prosodic properties of these derivations. The results show that besides the strictly possessive/relational domain (e.g., Ivan-ov ‘Ivan’s) -ov and -in are productively combined with bases denoting plants to derive kind or material denotations (e.g., hrast-ov ‘made of oak’). These denotations also allow combinations of stems and suffixes that are not found with possessives. Specifically, only with kind or material denotations can feminine bases combine with -ov e.g., jabuk-ov ‘made of apple’ (cf. jabuk-in ‘belonging to an apple (tree)’). Moreover, kind or material forms can involve a shift in the prosodic pattern of the base. We approach these data from the perspective of Distributed Morphology (Halle-Marantz 1993). We argue that possessive -ov/-in forms always involve a phasal n projection which triggers spellout, resulting in full productivity, semantic transparency and prosodic faithfulness. Kind or material forms involve a ‘defective’ n head, which can lack a gender feature (explaining the occurrence of -ov on feminine bases). This n head acts as a phase at LF, triggering semantic transparency, while being permeable at PF, allowing prosodic shifts (Marušič 2005, 2009).
Scalp and calvarial defects may result from trauma, thermal or electrical burns, resection of benign or malignant tumors, infections or radionecrosis. Reconstruction of large scalp defects is a ...demanding procedure. The reconstructive "ladder" are applicable to scalp and calvarial defects reconstruction.
A 68-year-old female was admitted to our clinic due to the nine-day old scalp burn wound, incurred under unclear circumstances. Third degree burn wound affected the left frontal-parietal, temporal and part of the occipital region with carbonification of the whole left ear lobe. The treatment was carried out in two stages. Radical full thickness necrectomy of the scalp was performed, the defect margins were curetted to the active bleeding, and the ear lobe was amputated. The defect sized 23 x 15 cm was reconstructed using the"banana peel"transposition galea-cutaneous flap from the remainder of the scalp, which was based only on the right occipital artery. Two months after the surgery the appearance was satisfactory, and all wounds were healed.
Designing of large-scale flaps is very hazardous, especially in elderly people. Scalp reconstruction based on one artery has to be planned in detail and performed when the possibility of complication is reduced to minimum. Our case report underlines possible reconstruction as delayed procedure even with the exposed bone (second look procedure), as well as the reconstruction of half scalp with the local flap based on one pericranial artery.
