Bio-based plastics show an evolving market and application range and therefore have become increasingly popular in research and economy. The limitation of fossil resources as well as linked ...environmental issues have led to the development of an innovative bioeconomy and also triggered the shift from fossil-based plastics to bio-based plastics. The original motivation for this study was to propose a comprehensive approach to calculate the sustainability performance of bio-based plastics on a global scale. To provide a calculative basis, a review on available data from life cycle assessment (LCA), social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC) studies on bio-based plastics was carried out and showed limited availability of quantifiable results with regard to the social and economic performance of bio-based plastics. In environmental LCA, with the ISO-family and related documents, a group of harmonized standards and approaches does exist. However, missing practical and consented guidelines hamper the comparability of studies and the exploitability of data - not only within the bio-based plastic sector but also in comparison to the fossil-based counterparts. Therefore, a calculation for the global sustainability performance of bio-based plastics was merely conducted for the environmental impact category global warming potential. Taking the technical substitution potential of fossil-based with bio-based plastics as well as limitations in data availability into account the estimation was performed for a substitution of approximately two-thirds of the global plastic demand. The results show, that bio-based plastics could potentially save 241 to 316 Mio. t of CO2-eq. annually. Thereby this study gives a first outlook how bio-based plastics could contribute to a sustainable development, making benefits and drawbacks more tangible.

Die Bewertungskriterien für den PLIX sind die Verpackungsmenge, die Rezyklierfähigkeit und deren Umweltwirkung; die daraus resultierende Bewertung wird in einem „best case“ bis „worst case“ Szenario dargestellt. The Plastic‐Index (PLIX) offers consumers and companies a user‐friendly tool to evaluate and compare plastic packaging. The PLIX enables consumers to reduce their packaging consumption, and companies in trade and logistics to minimize their overall environmental footprint. The evaluation criteria for the PLIX are packaging quantity, recyclability, and environmental impact. The resulting assessment is displayed in a best to worst case scenario. Using life cycle thinking, the packaging is accounted from cradle‐to‐gate, from resource extraction to the point of sale in retail. In the present case study the PLIX serves as an instrument to compare different packaging within a product group, for example tomatoes. However, the PLIX can be used to analyze case studies from other industries but food.
Konsumierende stehen häufig vor der Frage, mit welchem Einkaufsverhalten sie die umweltfreundlichste Verpackung wählen können. Durch die zahlreichen Produkte sowie dazugehörigen Verpackungsmöglichkeiten herrscht Unklarheit darüber, was eine nachhaltige Verpackung ausmacht. Bislang gibt es kaum Möglichkeiten, sich schnell und verständlich über die Umweltfreundlichkeit von Verpackungen zu informieren, um darauf basierend eine Auswahl zu treffen. Zudem fehlt auch bei Unternehmen häufig das Wissen, diese Informationen zu filtern und verständlich zu kommunizieren, obwohl die nötigen Daten dafür meist vorhanden sind.
Concentrated solar power (CSP) is an emerging technology for electricity production that uses solar energy and allows storing energy in the form of heat, which makes the energy also available at ...night. This work assesses the impact of concentrated solar power tower plants with molten salt as heat transfer fluid and storage medium, considering all three pillars of sustainability: environment, economy and society. The quantitative methods applied for each pillar are life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle costing (LCC) and life cycle working environment (LCWE). All these methods are applied within the GaBi ts software and database system in a single and consistent model. The results show that a holistic quantitative sustainability assessment within a single framework is possible, as a first try, and further areas of research have been identified.

Assessing the economic and environmental life cycle impacts of long-lasting construction projects presents numerous methodological challenges. Three advances over established methods are presented ...for the life cycle evaluation of construction projects. First, future uncertainty during the project life or study period is explicitly accounted for. This involves moving from a deterministic approach requiring precise data to a probabilistic approach where uncertain variables are defined by ranges. The outcome of life cycle evaluation is then given by probability distributions, generated by Monte Carlo simulation. Second, flexible strategies are considered that allow for adaptation to changing conditions during the project life. Flexible strategies (also modelled by Monte Carlo simulation) incorporate specified 'life cycle options' which are exercised if it is advantageous to do so, otherwise they remain unexercised. Third, cost-based life cycle costing (LCC) and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) are linked in a single LCC+A evaluation tool. There are still differences between cost and environmental evaluation, but the use of a shared framework enables the two aspects to be compared systematically. The two-dimensional 'ecoportfolio' diagram presents one way of analysing results. The innovations are demonstrated in a case study that assesses both economic and environmental impacts while accounting for future uncertainties.
L'évaluation des incidences économiques et environnementaux du cycle de vie des projets de construction de longue durée présente de nombreux problèmes méthodologiques. Il est présenté trois avancées par rapport aux méthodes établies concernant l'évaluation du cycle de vie des projets de construction. En premier lieu, est explicitement prise en compte l'incertitude future pendant la durée de vie du projet ou la période d'étude. Ceci implique de passer d'une approche déterministe nécessitant des données précises à une approche probabiliste dans laquelle les variables incertaines sont définies par des plages. Le résultat de l'évaluation du cycle de vie est ensuite donné par des distributions de probabilités, générées par la méthode de simulation de Monte-Carlo. En second lieu, il est envisagé des stratégies flexibles qui permettent l'adaptation à des conditions changeantes pendant la durée de vie du projet. Ces stratégies flexibles (également modélisées par une simulation de Monte-Carlo) intègrent des « options de cycle de vie » spécifiées qui sont levées s'il est avantageux de le faire, et qui sinon demeurent non levées. En troisième lieu, l'estimation du coût du cycle de vie (LCC) basée sur les coûts et l'évaluation environnementale du cycle de vie (LCA) sont liées dans un outil unique d'évaluation LCC+A. Il existe encore des différences entre l'estimation du coût et l'évaluation environnementale, mais l'utilisation d'un cadre partagé permet de comparer systématiquement ces deux aspects. Le schéma bidimensionnel de « l'éco-portefeuille » présente une manière d'analyser les résultats. Les innovations sont montrées dans une étude de cas qui évalue les incidences à la fois économiques et environnementales tout en rendant compte des incertitudes futures.

AbstractUncertainty about the scale of future demand presents a challenge for infrastructure design. The attraction of flexible strategies, incorporating upgrade options that can be exercised when ...and if required, has been recognized for a long time. The techniques of real options allowed the benefits of flexible strategies to be quantified for the first time. A new and simplified methodology for real options analysis has been developed and implemented in software. It performs evaluation in both cost and environmental impact terms. A case study of a real highway in Spain was evaluated using the new methodology and software. Seven alternative strategies for the roadway (subgrade, base course, and surface course) were evaluated, six with upgrade options that are exercised if the traffic demand crosses specified thresholds. The rate of traffic growth, and also the discount rate for financial evaluation, were treated as uncertain variables. The highway was designed when the Spanish economy was growing strongly and a high roadway specification performed best. Before the highway was built the economy crashed and construction was canceled. Recalculation for the posteconomic shock conditions with lower traffic growth and a higher interest rate favored a lower highway specification with upgrade options. Sensitivity analysis shows how the specification choice varies with the values taken by the uncertain variables. A novel specification was proposed to maximize flexibility when there is high uncertainty about traffic growth, and evaluation showed that it performed better in many conditions. The methodology of evaluating flexible strategies could be used in many applications, including infrastructure for climate change adaptation.

In the project Molecular Sorting different processes to recover high quality resource flows are researched, in order to allow for an ...eco- and resource-efficient recovery of material resources. Future developments play a major role in LCA, due to the technology development itself, the provision of the necessary energy, alternative technologies and the manner of the resource production. Die Rückgewinnung hochwertiger Stoffströme ist eine große Herausforderung einer ressourceneffizienten Wirtschaftsweise. Mithilfe der Ökobilanz können bei der Entwicklung neuer Recyclingmethoden deren ökologische Wirkungen ermittelt werden. Der Artikel beschreibt die Vorteile einer entwicklungsbegleitenden Ökobilanz und deren Beitrag zur Technologieentwicklung.
