Observations of He II Ly{\alpha} Gunn-Peterson troughs have proved to be a valuable probe of the epoch of helium reionization at z~3. Since this optical depth can become unmeasurably large even for ...modest He II fractions, various alternate techniques have been proposed to push to higher redshift, and among the more promising is looking at higher order Lyman-series troughs. We here report four new observations of the He II Ly{\beta} trough, including new data on the only sightline with a prior Ly{\beta} observation. However, the effective optical depth ratio {\tau}_eff,{\beta}/{\tau}_eff,{\alpha} is not simply predicted by (f_{\beta} {\lambda}_{\beta})/(f_{\alpha} {\lambda}_{\alpha})=0.16, and we analyze cosmological simulations to find that the correct ratio for helium at z~3 is ~0.35. In one case we infer {\tau}_eff,{\alpha} > 8.8, strong evidence that helium was not fully reionized at z=3.2--3.5, in agreement with previous measurements suggesting a later completion of reionization.
The timing and duration of the reionization epoch is crucial to the emergence and evolution of structure in the universe. The relative roles that star-forming galaxies, active galactic nuclei and ...quasars play in contributing to the metagalactic ionizing background across cosmic time remains uncertain. Deep quasar counts provide insights into their role, but the potentially crucial contribution from star-formation is highly uncertain due to our poor understanding of the processes that allow ionizing radiation to escape into the intergalactic medium (IGM). The fraction of ionizing photons that escape from star-forming galaxies is a fundamental free parameter used in models to "fine-tune" the timing and duration of the reionization epoch that occurred somewhere between 13.4 and 12.7 Gyrs ago (redshifts between 12 > z > 6). However, direct observation of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons emitted below the rest frame \ion{H}{1} ionization edge at 912 \AA\ is increasingly improbable at redshifts z > 3, due to the steady increase of intervening Lyman limit systems towards high z. Thus UV and U-band optical bandpasses provide the only hope for direct, up close and in depth, observations of the types of environment that favor LyC escape. By quantifying the evolution over the past 11 billion years (z < 3) of the relationships between LyC escape and local and global parameters ..., we can provide definitive information on the LyC escape fraction that is so crucial to answering the question of, how did the universe come to be ionized? Here we provide estimates of the ionizing continuum flux emitted by "characteristic" (L_{uv}^*) star-forming galaxies as a function of look back time and escape fraction, finding that at z = 1 (7.6 Gyrs ago) L_{uv}^* galaxies with an escape fraction of 1% have a flux of 10^{-19} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1} \AA^{-1}.
We present the analysis of XMM-Newton and Swift optical-UV and X-ray observations of the Seyfert-1/QSO Mrk 509, part of an unprecedented multi-wavelength campaign, investigating the nuclear ...environment of this AGN. The XMM-Newton data are from a series of 10 observations of about 60 ks each, spaced from each other by about 4 days, taken in Oct-Nov 2009. During our campaign, Mrk 509 was also observed with Swift for a period of about 100 days, monitoring the behaviour of the source before and after the XMM-Newton observations. With these data we have established the continuum spectrum in the optical-UV and X-ray bands and investigated its variability on the timescale of our campaign with a resolution time of a few days. In order to measure and model the continuum as far as possible into the UV, we also made use of HST/COS observations of Mrk 509 (part of our coordinated campaign) and of an archival FUSE observation. We have found that in addition to an X-ray power-law, the spectrum displays soft X-ray excess emission below 2 keV, which interestingly varies in association with the thermal optical-UV emission from the accretion disc. The change in the X-ray power-law component flux (albeit smaller than that of the soft excess), on the other hand, is uncorrelated to the flux variability of the soft X-ray excess and the disc component on the probed timescale. The results of our simultaneous broad-band spectral and timing analysis suggest that, on a resolution time of a few days, the soft X-ray excess of Mrk 509 is produced by the Comptonisation of the thermal optical-UV photons from the accretion disc by a warm (0.2 keV) optically thick (tau ~ 17) corona surrounding the inner regions of the disc. This makes Mrk 509, with a black hole mass of about 1-3 x 10^8 solar masses, the highest mass known system to display such behaviour and origin for the soft X-ray excess.
The association of microcephaly and mental retardation with a non-pigmentary retinopathy is described in three siblings of consanguineous parents. The electroretinogram showed the distinctive ...appearance of markedly attenuated "b" wave but normal "a" wave suggestive of a retinal dystrophy primarily affecting post-receptoral elements in the inner retina. This appears to be an autosomal recessive condition which has not been previously reported.

Long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) increased glucose oxidation and (32)P incorporation into phospholipids in in vitro experiments with dog thyroid slices. The time course of the response was ...different from that obtained with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), but was very similar to the delayed effect observed in vivo. During a 45 min incubation, TSH, but not LATS increased glucose oxidation, whereas in longer experiments up to 6 hr, both substances augmented (14)CO(2) production. Amounts of pooled human gamma globulin equivalent to LATS were inactive. Although TSH stimulated (32)P incorporation into phospholipids during a 2 hr incubation, LATS was ineffective. In longer incubations, from 4(1/2) to 8 hr, LATS did increase (32)P incorporation. The stimulatory effect of LATS was not abolished by anti-TSH antibody capable of neutralizing human TSH. Effects of LATS were also obtained with beef and pig thyroid slices. In addition to stimulation of glucose oxidation in dog thyroid slices, LATS occasionally also stimulated glucose oxidation in dog spleen and liver slices. Despite a 54-fold increase in LATS concentration, a satisfactory dose-response curve could not be demonstrated when (14)CO(2) production was measured.
