In this paper, we describe the first data release of the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey. VIDEO is a ∼12 deg2 survey in the ...near-infrared Z, Y, J, H and K
s bands, specifically designed to enable the evolution of galaxies and large structures to be traced as a function of both epoch and environment from the present day out to z = 4, and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the most massive galaxies up to and into the epoch of reionization. With its depth and area, VIDEO will be able to fully explore the period in the Universe where AGN and starburst activity were at their peak and the first galaxy clusters were beginning to virialize. VIDEO therefore offers a unique data set with which to investigate the interplay between AGN, starbursts and environment, and the role of feedback at a time when it was potentially most crucial.
We provide data over the VIDEO-XMM3 tile, which also covers the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey Deep-1 field (CFHTLS-D1). The released VIDEO data reach a 5σ AB-magnitude depth of Z = 25.7, Y = 24.5, J = 24.4, H = 24.1 and K
s = 23.8 in 2 arcsec diameter apertures (the full depth of Y = 24.6 will be reached within the full integration time in future releases). The data are compared to previous surveys over this field and we find good astrometric agreement with the Two Micron All Sky Survey, and source counts in agreement with the recently released UltraVISTA survey data. The addition of the VIDEO data to the CFHTLS-D1 optical data increases the accuracy of photometric redshifts and significantly reduces the fraction of catastrophic outliers over the redshift range 0 < z < 1 from 5.8 to 3.1 per cent in the absence of an i-band luminosity prior. However, we expect that the main improvement in photometric redshifts will come in the redshift range 1 < z < 4 due to the sensitivity to the Balmer and 4000 Å breaks provided by the near-infrared VISTA filters. All images and catalogues presented in this paper are publicly available through ESO's phase 3 archive and the VISTA Science Archive.
Although reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) and non-myeloablative (NMA)-conditioning regimens have been used for over a decade, their relative efficacy vs myeloablative (MA) approaches to ...allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation in patients with AML and myelodysplasia (MDS) is unknown. We compared disease status, donor, graft and recipient characteristics with outcomes of 3731 MA with 1448 RIC/NMA procedures performed at 217 centers between 1997 and 2004. The 5-year univariate probabilities and multivariate relative risk outcomes of relapse, TRM, disease-free survival (DFS) and OS are reported. Adjusted OS at 5 years was 34, 33 and 26% for MA, RIC and NMA transplants, respectively. NMA conditioning resulted in inferior DFS and OS, but there was no difference in DFS and OS between RIC and MA regimens. Late TRM negates early decreases in toxicity with RIC and NMA regimens. Our data suggest that higher regimen intensity may contribute to optimal survival in patients with AML/MDS, suggesting roles for both regimen intensity and graft vs leukemia in these diseases. Prospective studies comparing regimens are needed to confirm this finding and determine the optimal approach to patients who are eligible for either MA or RIC/NMA conditioning.
Declines in animal body sizes are widely reported and likely impact ecological interactions and ecosystem services. For harvested species subject to multiple stressors, limited understanding of the ...causes and consequences of size declines impedes prediction, prevention, and mitigation. We highlight widespread declines in Pacific salmon size based on 60 years of measurements from 12.5 million fish across Alaska, the last largely pristine North American salmon-producing region. Declines in salmon size, primarily resulting from shifting age structure, are associated with climate and competition at sea. Compared to salmon maturing before 1990, the reduced size of adult salmon after 2010 has potentially resulted in substantial losses to ecosystems and people; for Chinook salmon we estimated average per-fish reductions in egg production (-16%), nutrient transport (-28%), fisheries value (-21%), and meals for rural people (-26%). Downsizing of organisms is a global concern, and current trends may pose substantial risks for nature and people.
Purpose
The increasing interest and availability of non-standard positron-emitting radionuclides has heightened the relevance of radionuclide choice in the development and optimization of new ...positron emission tomography (PET) imaging procedures, both in preclinical research and clinical practice. Differences in achievable resolution arising from positron range can largely influence application suitability of each radionuclide, especially in small-ring preclinical PET where system blurring factors due to annihilation photon acollinearity and detector geometry are less significant. Some resolution degradation can be mitigated with appropriate range corrections implemented during image reconstruction, the quality of which is contingent on an accurate characterization of positron range.
Procedures
To address this need, we have characterized the positron range of several standard and non-standard PET radionuclides (As-72, F-18, Ga-68, Mn-52, Y-86, and Zr-89) through imaging of small-animal quality control phantoms on a benchmark preclinical PET scanner. Further, the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS v3.02) code was utilized for Monte Carlo modeling of positron range-dependent blurring effects.
Results
Positron range kernels for each radionuclide were derived from simulation of point sources in ICRP reference tissues. PET resolution and quantitative accuracy afforded by various radionuclides in practicable imaging scenarios were characterized using a convolution-based method based on positron annihilation distributions obtained from PHITS. Our imaging and simulation results demonstrate the degradation of small animal PET resolution, and quantitative accuracy correlates with increasing positron energy; however, for a specific “benchmark” preclinical PET scanner and reconstruction workflow, these differences were observed to be minimal given radionuclides with average positron energies below ~ 400 keV.
Conclusion
Our measurements and simulations of the influence of positron range on PET resolution compare well with previous efforts documented in the literature and provide new data for several radionuclides in increasing clinical and preclinical use. The results will support current and future improvements in methods for positron range corrections in PET imaging.

As climate changes, the effects of forest diseases on forest ecosystems will change. We review knowledge of relationships between climate variables and several forest diseases, as well as current ...evidence of how climate, host and pathogen interactions are responding or might respond to climate change. Many forests can be managed to both adapt to climate change and minimize the undesirable effects of expected increases in tree mortality. We discuss four types of forest and disease management tactics – monitoring, forecasting, planning and mitigation – and provide case studies of yellow‐cedar decline and sudden aspen decline to illustrate how forest diseases might be managed in the face of climate change. The uncertainties inherent to climate change effects can be diminished by conducting research, assessing risks, and linking results to forest policy, planning and decision making.
Critical to the origin of life are the ingredients of life, of course, but also the physical and chemical conditions in which prebiotic chemical reactions can take place. These factors place ...constraints on the types of Hadean environment in which life could have emerged. Many locations, ranging from hydrothermal vents and pumice rafts, through volcanic-hosted splash pools to continental springs and rivers, have been proposed for the emergence of life on Earth, each with respective advantages and certain disadvantages. However, there is another, hitherto unrecognized environment that, on the Hadean Earth (4.5-4.0 Ga), would have been more important than any other in terms of spatial and temporal scale: the sedimentary layer between oceanic crust and seawater. Using as an example sediments from the 3.5-3.33 Ga Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa, analogous at least on a local scale to those of the Hadean eon, we document constant permeation of the porous, carbonaceous, and reactive sedimentary layer by hydrothermal fluids emanating from the crust. This partially UV-protected, subaqueous sedimentary environment, characterized by physical and chemical gradients, represented a widespread system of miniature chemical reactors in which the production and complexification of prebiotic molecules could have led to the origin of life. Differences in the developmental origin ...and relative proportions of biochemically distinct classes of cortical neurons have been found between rodents and primates. In addition, species differences in the properties of certain cell types, such as neurogliaform cells, have also been reported. Consequently, in this study we compared the anatomical and physiological properties of parvalbumin (PV)-positive basket interneurons in the prefrontal cortex of macaque monkeys and rats. The somal size, total dendritic length, and horizontal and vertical spans of the axonal arbor were similar in monkeys and rats. Physiologically, PV basket cells could be identified as fast-spiking interneurons in both species, based on their short spike and high-frequency firing without adaptation. However, important interspecies differences in the intrinsic physiological properties were found. In monkeys, basket cells had a higher input resistance and a lower firing threshold, and they generated more spikes at near-threshold current intensities than those in rats. Thus monkey basket cells appeared to be more excitable. In addition, rat basket cells consistently fired the first spike with a substantial delay and generated spike trains interrupted by quiescent periods more often than monkey basket cells. The frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic potentials in basket cells was considerably higher in rats than that in monkeys. These differences between rats and monkeys in the electrophysiological properties of PV-positive basket cells may contribute to the differential patterns of neuronal activation observed in rats and monkeys performing working-memory tasks.

The interactions between inhibitory fast‐spiking (FS) interneurons and excitatory pyramidal neurons contribute to the fundamental properties of cortical networks. An important role for FS ...interneurons in mediating rapid inhibition in local sensory and motor cortex microcircuits and processing thalamic inputs to the cortex has been shown in multiple reports; however, studies in the prefrontal cortex, a key neocortical region supporting working memory, are less numerous. In the present work, connections between layer 2/3 pyramidal cells and FS interneurons were studied with paired whole‐cell recordings in acute neocortical slices of the medial prefrontal cortex from juvenile rats. The connection rate between FS interneurons and pyramidal neurons was about 40% in each direction with 16% of pairs connected reciprocally. Excitatory and inhibitory connections had a high efficacy and a low neurotransmission failure rate. Sustained presynaptic activity decreased the amplitude of responses and increased the failure rate more in excitatory connections than in inhibitory connections. In the reciprocal connections between the FS and pyramidal neurons, inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmission was more efficient and had a lower failure rate than in the unidirectional connections; the differences increased during the train stimulation. These results suggest the presence of distinct preferential subnetworks between FS interneurons and pyramidal cells in the rat prefrontal cortex that might be specific for this cortical area.

Modern fabrication technology has enabled the study of submicron ferromagnetic strips with a particularly simple domain structure, allowing single, well-defined domain walls to be isolated and ...characterized. However, these domain walls have complex field-driven dynamics. The wall velocity initially increases with field, but above a certain threshold the domain wall abruptly slows down, accompanied by periodic transformations of the domain wall structure. This behaviour is potentially detrimental to the speed and proper functioning of proposed domain-wall-based devices, and although methods for suppression of the breakdown have been demonstrated in simulations, a convincing experimental demonstration is lacking. Here, we show experimentally that a series of cross-shaped traps acts to prevent transformations of the domain wall structure and increase the domain wall velocity by a factor of four compared to the maximum velocity on a plain strip. Our results suggest a route to faster and more reliable domain wall devices for memory, logic and sensing.
Highlights • Sedentary time is associated with chronic disease risk and mortality. • Older adults spend most of their waking time sedentary, and this increases with age. • ‘Small Steps’ is a novel, ...incremental program to reduce sedentary time. • The intervention showed preliminary effectiveness in reducing sedentary time. • ‘Small Steps’ is a promising avenue for behavioral modification in older adults.
