The nature of geomorphic connectivity in headwater mountainous catchments influences the delivery of sediment to the downstream channel network. A reduced sediment supply from mountainous regions ...results in channel instability and loss of physical habitats. The aim of this study is to show how the small, mid‐mountainous Černá Opava catchment in the Czech Republic is organised in terms of sediment sources, sinks and (dis)connectivity of sediment transport. A field‐based approach combining GIS analysis and geomorphological mapping was adopted to unravel the nature of present‐day sediment delivery to the channel network. When the lithology and land use of an area are relatively uniform, the sediment delivery to the channel network varies spatially, according to slope–channel connectivity and the distribution of in‐channel sources (cut banks and incising reaches). Despite sediment supply being limited by forested slopes and a number of natural and anthropogenic in‐channel barriers, stream channels display no signs of “hungry water” conditions.
The Munin River (Svalbard) is a mountainous braided proglacial river. It drains from two valley glaciers developing an elongated channel belt and turning into a wide braided outwash fan before ...entering the main river. The Munin River is in its axial head supplied by the material from glaciers, and along the stream by material from lateral sources, i.e. braided outwash fan, debris-flow and fluvial-flow dominated fans. Detailed analyses of clast roundness showed that roundness suddenly changes to higher degrees in negative correlation with channel belt width and sinuosity of the channels. The roundness increases rapidly in sections with small channel belt width and low sinuosity, which can be seen in the bedrock gorge. On the contrary, the roundness does not change much in sections with large channel belt width and high sinuosity. The morphological changes of the channel belt are controlled by the bedrock morphology of the catchment, which is the main factor affecting the clast roundness in the Munin River. The nature of the lateral material sources and the downstream traction affect rather the individual gravel fractions.
Nález umístěný mimo sídelní a funerální areály představuje ojedinělý doklad lidské aktivity v době římské v centrální části Krušných hor. Přes nejisté nálezové okolnosti lze klást soubor do souvislostí s rituálním chováním a interpretovat jej jako ireverzibilní depot uložený někdy na přelomu starší a mladší doby římské z votivních důvodů.
The sediment transport in polar regions is highly changeable and it is getting faster in connection with a climate change. This study describes the Hrbye River catchment located in the northern ...Billefjorden, Central Svalbard. The Czech Arctic Station and AMUPS - Adam Mickiewicz University Polish Polar Station are located in near this locality Petunia Bay. The material for this study was sampled in August 2016, during the summer research campaign of Czech Arctic Station together with a cooperation between Masaryk University in Brno and the University of Oslo via Norway Grants. The catchment area is 60 km2. The area of interest lies around the 10 km long Hrbye River in its braidplain, which is 2.3 km wide and 4.5 km long. In the Hrbye Glacier forefield, 27 sediment sampling localities were selected and defined into seven groups: (i) esker complex; (ii) debris stripes; (iii) till plain; (iv) hummocky moraine; (v) post-LIA braidplain; (vi) LIA moraine; (vii) LIA braidplain. Three main petrological types of rocks were studied (SVP – sandstone, VAP – limestone, ORT – orthogneiss). Lithology and roundness of the clasts were evaluated in order to study clast shape properties from various glacial sediments. The results show the dominant role of lithology on the clast shape modification in the Hrbye Glacier forefield.
The recent acceleration of gully erosion caused by environmental factors and human impacts has led to an enhanced demand for applied research in risk-prone areas worldwide. We investigated the ...dynamics of gullies that have recently threatened dwellings and railways in the foreland of the Eastern Sudetes (340–390 m a.s.l. in the NE part of Czechia). Flood countermeasures in a residential area above the study site created conditions conducive to accelerated erosion in the gullies; thus, the main aim of this study was to determine how human interventions changed the spatio-temporal dynamics of the gullies during a short period. Twenty two gullies (with a mean length 48.5 m) have developed on a 1-km-wide escarpment (with a mean slope 25°) composed of glaciogenic sediments of various sizes. Dendrogeomorphic techniques were applied on 23 exposed roots of Tilia cordata Mill. (a tree species that has never been used to detect root exposure). Microsections were prepared using a G.S.L.1 sledge microtome and analysed using the WinCELL Reg software to determine the timing of root exposure.
Approximately 90% of the eroded sediments (1287.4 m3) were transported across the railway onto the floodplain and caused damage to dwellings, while approximately 10% created bare accumulations at the gully floors. The most significant pulses of gully erosion occurred during the last 10 years (2007, 2009, 2010, and 2014). The maximum identified gully erosion occurred in 2014 (max. incision: 154 cm; maximum widening: 160 cm). In contrast, the development of the bank failures has been slowly progressing since the early 1990s, with a mean bank eroded area between 0.07 and 0.12 m2 year−1. The analysis of the precipitation characteristics (1963–2016) with the Mann-Kendal trend test revealed no significant trend. However, the last strong erosion event, in May of 2014, was triggered by an extraordinary rainstorm with an hourly intensity of 41.3 mm h−1 (maximum intensity of 2.8 mm min−1). Therefore, the recent increase in gully erosion is the consequence of extreme precipitation and human interventions that have been performed in the study site since 2007 (i.e., damming of the ditches and building of new culverts). The dendrogeomorphic research of exposed T. cordata roots significantly contributed to the identification of the gully erosion pulses and thus can be further applied in other localities.
•We applied interdisciplinary approach to analyse gully erosion in NE Czechia.•Exposed root network of T. cordata allowed determining of gully erosion rates.•0.7–1.5 m gully incision was identified during the erosion events in 2010 and 2014.•Unreasonable human interventions influenced the spatial dynamics of gullies.•Intense (40 mm h−1) and highly localized rainstorms triggered sudden gully erosion.
