The specialised lexicographic treatment of oenology and viticulture usually consists in the compiling of articles describing the language of wine in general language dictionaries, or presenting ...professional knowledge of wine in specialised multi-field dictionaries and encyclopedias. This treatment also encompasses the terminological compilation of single field dictionaries describing the language and/or knowledge of wine. Lexicographically speaking, all this is but a fraction of the complete picture. Indeed, the specialised lexicography of oenology and viticulture is multifaceted and goes far beyond the above-mentioned types of articles and dictionaries. It includes a broad range of both online and printed lexicographically structured information tools, such as wine guides, atlases, companions, oenological websites, and mobile applications. In line with this growing interest for lexicographically structured information tools on oenology, wine making, and wine tasting, this article argues for an expansion of lexicography dealing with wine: It explains how a new lexicographic information tool, in this case OENOLEX Burgundy, a French monolingual online wine dictionary commissioned by the Burgundian wine industry, offers various functions and usage modes to its users, including access to multimodal data, and how it differs from a comparable South African online wine dictionary commissioned by the South African wine industry. In line with the findings of this comparative study, lexicographic proposals are subsequently formulated. The first proposal is that such online wine industry dictionaries should be developed in accordance with specific user situations and needs, and make use of a monofunctional design and an adaptive user interface. The second proposal is that such online wine industry dictionaries should not stand alone, as they could benefit from a full integration with the websites of the wine industry, and consequently transform into genuine lexicographic information tools. The language of written business communication is characterised by the extensive use of phraseology, not only in terms of collocations and idiomatic expressions, but also of standard phrases in ...prototypical business genres. In any case, the phraseological information should be included in business dictionaries (in the following referred to as BDs) in accordance with the planned dictionary functions. Hence, the selection and presentation of the phraseological information should be decided by the lexicographer on the basis of the user needs alone and not on the recommendations of the phraseological literature about lexicographical practice. In this paper, I will firstly explain why lexicography and phraseology, although closely associated in a large number of studies, are quite different disciplines, and how their shared interest for dictionary practice in general is based on radically different views. I will then discuss the dictionary functions of BDs and focus on a number of concepts featuring extensive phraseological solutions to show and argue that dealing with phraseology in BDs should always keep focus on dictionary functions.
Lexicographical corpora for dictionary making are normally used as an empirical base of the dictionary. They provide highly valuable lexical material, patterns, attestations of use, etc. However, ...once exploited by the lexicographer, they remain hidden to the user. The question thus is: Can a corpus become even more useful not only to the lexicographer, but also to the user? How can a corpus become a functional component of the dictionary? I will address these questions by outlining the methodological issues related to the design and exploitation of an oral corpus for the construction of Oenolex, a dictionary of wine tasting. In Oenolex, the corpus is not simply the empirical base of the dictionary: it is lexicographically structured so that it can be accessed by the user. Oenolex also shows how oral corpora can be an asset for specialised dictionary projects, particularly in domains in which terminology is subject to a high degree of variation. This in turn calls for an even closer cooperation with experts; I will therefore argue, on the basis of the Klosa model of lexicographical phases (2013), that experts from the field of specialised communication and knowledge covered by the dictionary are truly needed in almost all phases of the dictionary process.
