New far-infrared and submillimeter photometry from the Herschel Space Observatory is presented for 61 nearby galaxies from the Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: A Far-Infrared Survey with Herschel ...(KINGFISH) sample. The spatially integrated fluxes are largely consistent with expectations based on Spitzer far-infrared photometry and extrapolations to longer wavelengths using popular dust emission models. Dwarf irregular galaxies are notable exceptions, as already noted by other authors, as their 500 mu m emission shows evidence for a submillimeter excess. In addition, the fraction of dust heating attributed to intense radiation fields associated with photodissociation regions is found to be (21 + or - 4)% larger when Herschel data are included in the analysis. Dust masses obtained from the dust emission models of Draine & Li are found to be on average nearly a factor of two higher than those based on single-temperature modified blackbodies, as single blackbody curves do not capture the full range of dust temperatures inherent to any galaxy. The discrepancy is largest for galaxies exhibiting the coolest far-infrared colors.
Understanding elementary excitations and their couplings in condensed matter systems is critical for developing better energy-conversion devices. In thermoelectric materials, the heat-to-electricity ...conversion efficiency is directly improved by suppressing the propagation of phonon quasiparticles responsible for macroscopic thermal transport. The current record material for thermoelectric conversion efficiency, SnSe, has an ultralow thermal conductivity, but the mechanism behind the strong phonon scattering remains largely unknown. From inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first-principles simulations, we mapped the four-dimensional phonon dispersion surfaces of SnSe, and found the origin of the ionic-potential anharmonicity responsible for the unique properties of SnSe. We show that the giant phonon scattering arises from an unstable electronic structure, with orbital interactions leading to a ferroelectric-like lattice instability. The present results provide a microscopic picture connecting electronic structure and phonon anharmonicity in SnSe, and offers new insights on how electron-phonon and phonon-phonon interactions may lead to the realization of ultralow thermal conductivity.
BackgroundThere is limited data on the risk factors and phenotypical characteristics associated with spirometrically confirmed COPD in never-smokers in the general population.AimsTo compare the ...characteristics associated with COPD by gender and by severity of airway obstruction in never-smokers and in ever-smokers.MethodWe analysed the data from 5176 adults aged 40 years and older who participated in the initial cross-sectional phase of the population-based, prospective, multisite Canadian Cohort of Obstructive Lung Disease study. Never-smokers were defined as those with a lifetime exposure of <1/20 pack year. Logistic regressions were constructed to evaluate associations for ‘mild’ and ‘moderate-severe’ COPD defined by FEV1/FVC <5th centile (lower limits of normal). Analyses were performed using SAS V.9.1 (SAS Institute, Cary, North Carolina, USA).ResultsThe prevalence of COPD (FEV1/FVC<lower limits of normal) in never-smokers was 6.4%, constituting 27% of all COPD subjects. The common independent predictors of COPD in never-smokers and ever-smokers were older age, self reported asthma and lower education. In never-smokers a history of hospitalisation in childhood for respiratory illness was discriminative, while exposure to passive smoke and biomass fuel for heating were discriminative for women. COPD in never-smokers and ever-smokers was characterised by increased respiratory symptoms, ‘respiratory exacerbation’ events and increased residual volume/total lung capacity, but only smokers had reduced DLCO/Va and emphysema on chest CT scans.ConclusionsThe study confirmed the substantial burden of COPD among never-smokers, defined the common and gender-specific risk factors for COPD in never-smokers and provided early insight into potential phenotypical differences in COPD between lifelong never-smokers and ever-smokers.Trial registration numberNCT00920348 (ClinicalTrials.gov); study ID number: IRO-93326.
Abstract The search for life in the Universe is a fundamental problem of astrobiology and modern science. The current progress in the detection of terrestrial-type exoplanets has opened a new avenue ...in the characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres and in the search for biosignatures of life with the upcoming ground-based and space missions. To specify the conditions favourable for the origin, development and sustainment of life as we know it in other worlds, we need to understand the nature of global (astrospheric), and local (atmospheric and surface) environments of exoplanets in the habitable zones (HZs) around G-K-M dwarf stars including our young Sun. Global environment is formed by propagated disturbances from the planet-hosting stars in the form of stellar flares, coronal mass ejections, energetic particles and winds collectively known as astrospheric space weather. Its characterization will help in understanding how an exoplanetary ecosystem interacts with its host star, as well as in the specification of the physical, chemical and biochemical conditions that can create favourable and/or detrimental conditions for planetary climate and habitability along with evolution of planetary internal dynamics over geological timescales. A key linkage of (astro)physical, chemical and geological processes can only be understood in the framework of interdisciplinary studies with the incorporation of progress in heliophysics, astrophysics, planetary and Earth sciences. The assessment of the impacts of host stars on the climate and habitability of terrestrial (exo)planets will significantly expand the current definition of the HZ to the biogenic zone and provide new observational strategies for searching for signatures of life. The major goal of this paper is to describe and discuss the current status and recent progress in this interdisciplinary field in light of presentations and discussions during the NASA Nexus for Exoplanetary System Science funded workshop ‘Exoplanetary Space Weather, Climate and Habitability’ and to provide a new roadmap for the future development of the emerging field of exoplanetary science and astrobiology.
Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) regulates multiple signaling cascades essential for cell proliferation, growth and differentiation. Using a genetic approach, we found that Drosophila FERM and ...PDZ domain-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase, dPtpmeg, negatively regulates border cell migration and inhibits the EGFR/Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway during wing morphogenesis. We further identified EGFR pathway substrate 15 (Eps15) as a target of dPtpmeg and its human homolog PTPN3. Eps15 is a scaffolding adaptor protein known to be involved in EGFR endocytosis and trafficking. Interestingly, PTPN3-mediated tyrosine dephosphorylation of Eps15 promotes EGFR for lipid raft-mediated endocytosis and lysosomal degradation. PTPN3 and the Eps15 tyrosine phosphorylation-deficient mutant suppress non-small-cell lung cancer cell growth and migration in vitro and reduce lung tumor xenograft growth in vivo. Moreover, depletion of PTPN3 impairs the degradation of EGFR and enhances proliferation and tumorigenicity of lung cancer cells. Taken together, these results indicate that PTPN3 may act as a tumor suppressor in lung cancer through its modulation of EGFR signaling.

The release of various inflammatory mediators into the bronchial lumen is thought to reflect both the type and degree of airway inflammation, eosinophilic Th2, and Th9, or ...neutrophilic Th1, and Th17, in patients with asthma.
Aims
We investigated whether cytokines and chemokines differed in sputum from subjects with more severe compared with milder asthma and whether unbiased factor analysis of cytokine and chemokine groupings indicates specific inflammatory pathways.
Methods
Cell‐free supernatants from induced sputum were obtained from subjects with a broad range of asthma severity (n = 158) and assessed using Milliplex® Cytokines/Chemokine kits I, II and III, measuring 75 individual proteins. Each cytokine, chemokine or growth factor concentration was examined for differences between asthma severity groups, for association with leucocyte counts, and by factor analysis.
Results
Severe asthma subjects had 9 increased and 4 decreased proteins compared to mild asthma subjects and fewer differences compared to moderate asthma. Twenty‐six mediators were significantly associated with an increasing single leucocyte type: 16 with neutrophils (3 interleukins IL, 3 CC chemokines, 4 CXC chemokines, 4 growth factors, TNF‐α and CX3CL1/Fractalkine); 5 with lymphocytes (IL‐7, IL‐16, IL‐23, IFN‐α2 and CCL4/MIP1β); IL‐15 and CCL15/MIP1δ with macrophages; IL‐5 with eosinophils; and IL‐4 and TNFSF10/TRAIL with airway epithelial cells. Factor analysis grouped 43 cytokines, chemokines and growth factors which had no missing data onto the first 10 factors, containing mixes of Th1, Th2, Th9 and Th17 inflammatory and anti‐inflammatory proteins.
Conclusions
Sputum cytokines, chemokines and growth factors were increased in severe asthma, primarily with increased neutrophils. Factor analysis identified complex inflammatory protein interactions, suggesting airway inflammation in asthma is characterized by overlapping immune pathways. Thus, focus on a single specific inflammatory mediator or pathway may limit understanding the complexity of inflammation underlying airway changes in asthma and selection of appropriate therapy.
Entry into tertiary education is a critical juncture where adolescents proceed to adulthood. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety, and factors associated with such ...symptoms, among university undergraduate students in Hong Kong.
A cross-sectional questionnaire study was employed. A total of 1200 undergraduate students from eight University Grants Committee-funded universities were invited to complete three sets of questionnaires, including the 9-item patient health questionnaire for screening of depressive symptoms, the 7-item generalised anxiety disorder scale for screening of anxiety symptoms, and a socio-demographic questionnaire.
Among the valid responses (n=1119) analysed, 767 (68.5%) respondents indicated mild to severe depressive symptoms, which were associated with mild to severe anxiety symptoms. Several lifestyle and psychosocial variables, including regular exercise, self-confidence, satisfaction with academic performance, and optimism towards the future were inversely related with mild to severe depressive symptoms. A total of 599 (54.4%) respondents indicated mild to severe anxiety symptoms, which were associated with level of academic difficulty. Satisfaction with friendship, sleep quality, and self-confidence were inversely associated with mild to severe anxiety symptoms.
More than 50% of respondents expressed some degree of depressive and anxiety symptoms (68.5% and 54.4%, respectively). Approximately 9% of respondents exhibited moderately severe to severe depressive symptoms; 5.8% exhibited severe anxiety symptoms. Respondents reporting regular exercise, higher self-confidence, and better satisfaction with both friendship and academic performance had fewer depressive and anxiety symptoms.
Objective To summarise the long term efficacy of anti-obesity drugs in reducing weight and improving health status.Design Updated meta-analysis of randomised trials.Data sources Medline, Embase, the ...Cochrane controlled trials register, the Current Science meta-register of controlled trials, and reference lists of identified articles. All data sources were searched from December 2002 (end date of last search) to December 2006.Studies reviewed Double blind randomised placebo controlled trials of approved anti-obesity dugs used in adults (age over 18) for one year or longer.Results 30 trials of one to four years’ duration met the inclusion criteria: 16 orlistat (n=10 631 participants), 10 sibutramine (n=2623), and four rimonabant (n=6365). Of these, 14 trials were new and 16 had previously been identified. Attrition rates averaged 30-40%. Compared with placebo, orlistat reduced weight by 2.9 kg (95% confidence interval 2.5 kg to 3.2 kg), sibutramine by 4.2 kg (3.6 kg to 4.7 kg), and rimonabant by 4.7 kg (4.1 kg to 5.3 kg). Patients receiving active drug treatment were significantly more likely to achieve 5% and 10% weight loss thresholds. Orlistat reduced the incidence of diabetes and improved concentrations of total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood pressure, and glycaemic control in patients with diabetes but increased rates of gastrointestinal side effects and slightly lowered concentrations of high density lipoprotein. Sibutramine lowered concentrations of high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides but raised blood pressure and pulse rate. Rimonabant improved concentrations of high density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, blood pressure, and glycaemic control in patients with diabetes but increased the risk of mood disorders.Conclusions Orlistat, sibutramine, and rimonabant modestly reduce weight, have differing effects on cardiovascular risk profiles, and have specific adverse effects.

Cross-sectional study.
In total, 84 obese children, 25 girls and 59 boys with median age and body mass index (BMI) of 12.0 years (interquartile range (IR): 9.5-14.0) and 30.3 kg/m(2) (IR: 27.1-33.4), respectively, referred for medical assessment were studied. All subjects underwent physical examination, anthropometric and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan measurements and real-time ultrasonographic (US) examination of the liver. Fasting blood samples were collected for the measurement of liver function, hepatitis status, levels of serum glucose and insulin and lipid profile. Degree of fatty infiltration of the liver was graded according to ultrasonic appearance of liver echotexture, liver-diaphragm differentiation in echo amplitude, hepatic echo penetration and clarity of hepatic blood vessels.
All recruited subjects had no history of alcohol abuse and tests for Hepatitis B or C virus were negative. Thorough examination showed all of them to be in general good health without signs of chronic liver disease. Hepatic steatosis identified by defined ultrasonic appearances was diagnosed in 65 subjects (77%); 17 girls and 48 boys. The severity of fatty liver was positively related to anthropometric measurements including BMI, waist and hip circumference, subscapular skinfold thickness; insulin resistance markers QUICKI and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA), and hypertriglyceridaemia. Multvariate ordinal regression analysis showed that BMI and raised alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were positively associated with fatty liver. Combination of hepatic steatosis with raised ALT (presumptive NASH) was found in 19 subjects (24%). This group of patients had significantly higher waist hip ratio and conicity index compared to those with isolated hepatic steatosis. Boys with presumed NASH were also found to have significantly higher insulin resistance.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was common among our cohort of obese children referred for medical assessment. The prevalence of simple steatosis and presumed NASH was 77 and 24%, respectively. The severity of US steatosis was positively correlated with BMI, raised ALT, insulin resistance and hypertryglyceridaemia. Ultrasonography being noninvasive and readily available could be used for the monitoring of the progression of hepatic steatosis. Further longitudinal studies are required to determine the natural disease progression and the role of insulin resistance and other factors in the pathophysiology of NAFLD.
In this paper, for the first time we demonstrate that horizontally stacked gate-all-around (GAA) Nanosheet structure is a good candidate for the replacement of FinFET at the 5nm technology node and ...beyond. It offers increased W eff per active footprint and better performance compared to FinFET, and with a less complex patterning strategy, leveraging EUV lithography. Good electrostatics are reported at L g =12nm and aggressive 44/48nm CPP (Contacted Poly Pitch) ground rules. We demonstrate work function metal (WFM) replacement and multiple threshold voltages, compatible with aggressive sheet to sheet spacing for wide stacked sheets. Stiction of sheets in long-channel devices is eliminated. Dielectric isolation is shown on standard bulk substrate for sub-sheet leakage control. Wrap-around contact (WAC) is evaluated for extrinsic resistance reduction.
