The evaporation of suspension droplets is the underlying mechanism in many surface-coating and surface-patterning applications. However, the uniformity of the final deposit suffers from the ...coffee-stain effect caused by contact line pinning. Here, we show that control over particle deposition can be achieved through droplet evaporation on oil-wetted hydrophilic surfaces. We demonstrate by flow visualization, theory, and numerics that the final deposit of the particles is governed by the coupling of the flow field in the evaporating droplet, the movement of its contact line, and the wetting state of the thin film surrounding the droplet. We show that the dynamics of the contact line can be tuned through the addition of a surfactant, thereby controlling the surface energies, which then leads to control over the final particle deposit. We also obtain an analytical expression for the radial velocity profile which reflects the hindering of the evaporation at the rim of the droplet by the nonvolatile oil meniscus, preventing flow toward the contact line, thus suppressing the coffee-stain effect. Finally, we confirm our physical interpretation by numerical simulations that are in qualitative agreement with the experiment.
Automatic modulation classification (AMC) lies at the core of cognitive radio and spectrum sensing. In this Letter, the authors propose a novel convolutional neural network (CNN)-based AMC method ...with multi-feature fusion. First, the modulation signals are transformed into two image representations of cyclic spectra (CS) and constellation diagram (CD), respectively. Then, a two-branch CNN model is developed, a gradient decent strategy is adopted and a multi-feature fusion technique is exploited to integrate the features learned from CS and CD. The proposed method is computationally efficient, benefited from its simple neural network. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve identical or better results with much reduced learned parameters and training time, compared with the state-of-the-art deep learning-based methods.
In railway surface defect detection applications, supervised deep learning methods suffer from the problems of insufficient defect samples and an imbalance between positive and negative samples. To ...overcome these problems, we propose a lightweight two-stage architecture including the railway cropping network (RC-Net) and defects removal variational autoencoder (DR-VAE), which requires only normal samples for training to achieve defect detection. First, we design a simple and effective RC-Net to extract railway surfaces accurately from railway inspection images. Second, the DR-VAE is proposed for background reconstruction of railway surface images to detect defects by self-supervised learning. Specifically, during the training process, DR-VAE contains a defect random mask module (D-RM) to generate self-supervised signals and uses a structural similarity index measure (SSIM) as pixel loss. In addition, the decoder of DR-VAE also acts as a discriminator to implement introspective adversarial training. In the inference stage, we reduce the random error of reconstruction by introducing a distribution capacity attenuation factor, and finally use the residuals of the original and reconstructed images to achieve segmentation of the defects. The experiments, including core parameter exploration and comparison with other models, indicate that the model can achieve a high detection accuracy.
In the past decades, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from pig production in China have been increasing rapidly, which has become a huge challenge in fulfilling China’s “carbon neutral” commitment. ...However, few studies have focused on reducing the GHG emissions from pig production in view of households’ pork consumption. This study analyzed the temporal and spatial pattern of the GHG emissions from pig production in China in 2001–2020 through geographical information system, optimized the pig production in China, and estimated thepotentialGHG emissions reduction from pig production in China in 2020 through spatial analysis based on pork surplus or deficit. Results show that the temporal and spatial pattern of the GHG emissions from pig production and its proportion in the total GHG emissions from livestock production in China in 2001–2020 varied differently at the province level and conformed to the “Hu Huanyong Line” mode. The largest and smallest GHG emissions from pig production were 108.93 million tons (MT) in 2014 and 78.10 MT in 2020, respectively. The largest and smallest proportions of GHG emissions from pig production in the total GHG emissions from livestock production were 77.52% in Zhejiang in 2013 and 0.13% in Tibet in 2009, respectively. Moreover, a potential optimization scheme of pig production in China in 2020 was provided and a method of GHG emissions reduction from pig production is proposed. The results indicate that the total potentialGHG emissions reduction from pig production on the basis of households’ pork consumption could reach 35.21 MT, accounting for 45.09% of the total GHG emissions from pig production and 10.27% of the total GHG emissions from livestock production in China in 2020. These findings areusefulin the spatial layout planning of pig production, agricultural GHG reduction, and global warming mitigation.
This study aimed to conduct an umbrella review of meta-analyses to synthesize the existing evidence regarding the relationship between vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphism and breast cancer (BC) ...risk. A comprehensive search was performed across multiple databases, including Embase, PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the Web of Science. The investigation included 17 meta-analyses for the BsmI polymorphism, 6 for the Cdx2 polymorphism, and 6 for the Poly (A) polymorphism. Among the 119 datasets analyzed, only 6 (5 %) reported statistically significant outcomes (p < 0.05), comprising 2 comparisons for VDR BsmI polymorphism (3 %), 1 for VDR Cdx-2 polymorphism (4 %), and 3 for VDR Poly (A) polymorphism (14 %), across various genetic models. Notably, significant heterogeneity was observed in 82 comparisons, and publication bias was detected in 16 comparisons. Furthermore, a substantial proportion (86 %) of the included studies exhibited critically low methodological quality. In conclusion, our findings suggest that VDR polymorphism (BsmI, Cdx-2, and Poly (A)) is not strongly associated with BC risk in the general population.

Plant cryptochromes undergo blue light-dependent phosphorylation to regulate their activity and abundance, but the protein kinases that phosphorylate plant cryptochromes have remained unclear. Here ...we show that photoexcited Arabidopsis cryptochrome 2 (CRY2) is phosphorylated in vivo on as many as 24 different residues, including 7 major phosphoserines. We demonstrate that four closely related Photoregulatory Protein Kinases (previously referred to as MUT9-like kinases) interact with and phosphorylate photoexcited CRY2. Analyses of the ppk123 and ppk124 triple mutants and amiR
artificial microRNA-expressing lines demonstrate that PPKs catalyse blue light-dependent CRY2 phosphorylation to both activate and destabilize the photoreceptor. Phenotypic analyses of these mutant lines indicate that PPKs may have additional substrates, including those involved in the phytochrome signal transduction pathway. These results reveal a mechanism underlying the co-action of cryptochromes and phytochromes to coordinate plant growth and development in response to different wavelengths of solar radiation in nature.
It is of great significance to obtain timely and accurate information of surface subsidence caused by mining. The probability integral method (PIM) model is more suitable for mining subsidence ...prediction in China and has been widely used. However, the PIM model has the question on too fast convergence in predicting at the edge of subsidence basin. In recent years, many scholars have studied a lot of subsidence monitoring methods in the coal mine area using the technical advantages of differential interferometry synthetic aperture radar (D-InSAR). But, serious incoherence of interferometry phase occurs because of the large gradient subsidence of mining area, which leads to the inability to accurately obtain large gradient subsidence of surface. Meanwhile, PIM model is more suitable for static prediction of mining subsidence, and has certain defects in dynamic prediction in the process of mining subsidence. In view of the above shortcomings, the improved PIM (IPIM) prediction model was first introduced through improving the PIM model in the paper, and the IPIM-G dynamic prediction model was constructed based on the PIM model and the Gompertz time function for mine-area mining. Then, a method was used to invert the parameters of the IPIM-G dynamic prediction model using time-series superposition results of surface subsidence monitored by the D-InSAR technology, and then the parameters obtained by inversion were applied to the IPIM-G model for mining subsidence prediction. The model was applied to a coal mine in Huaibei mining area, Anhui Province, its average RMSE is 138 mm and the average RMSE at the edge is 2.8 mm. The accuracy of IPIM-G dynamic prediction model is 88% higher than the monitoring results of the D-InSAR technology in obtaining the gradient subsidence information of the subsidence basin in the mining area. The results show that the model proposed in this paper can provide theoretical support for mining and production planning in the mining area.
Open pilon fractures combined with sizeable segmental bone defects are rare, difficult to treat, and often result in the loss of ankle joint function. The purpose of this study was to determine ...clinical outcomes in patients with open pilon fractures and sizeable segmental bone defects treated by limited ORIF combined with an Ilizarov external fixator.
We conducted a retrospective analysis of open pilon fractures with sizeable segmental bone defects treated by limited ORIF combined with the Ilizarov external fixator strategy between July 2014 and August 2019. All patients were included for assessments of fracture healing and infection rates. Ankle functional outcomes were assessed in all patients according to the Paley criteria and American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Score (AOFAS) at least 24 months post-injury.
All patients were followed up for a mean of 41.09 months. The mean bone defect size was 5.64 ± 1.21 cm. The average EFI and BTI were 1.56 ± 0.28 months/cm and 11.12 ± 0.74 days/cm, respectively. According to the Paley evaluation system, the success rate of ankle joint reconstruction was 64% (7/11). The mean score based on the AOFAS functional assessment was 77.73 ± 8.87. Five patients showed posttraumatic arthritis, one of whom required ankle arthrodesis. Three patients developed pin site infections, and one patient developed a deep infection after bone grafting.
The strategy of limited ORIF combined with an Ilizarov external fixator can restore ankle function in most patients with complex open tibial pilon fractures. Ankle stiffness, pin tract infection, and traumatic arthritis were the most common complications associated with this therapy.
Cryptochromes are blue light receptors that regulate plant growth and development. They also act as the core components of the central clock oscillator in animals. Although plant cryptochromes have ...been reported to regulate the circadian clock in blue light, how they do so is unclear. Here we show that Arabidopsis cryptochrome 2 (CRY2) forms photobodies with the TCP22 transcription factor in response to blue light in plant cells. We provide evidence that PPK kinases influence the characteristics of these photobodies and that together these components, along with LWD transcriptional regulators, can positively regulate the expression of CCA1 encoding a central component of the circadian oscillator.
