An ideal material has yet to be discovered that can completely treat dentin hypersensitivity; however, calcium phosphate precipitation has exhibited potential value for the treatment of dentin ...hypersensitivity by the occlusion of dentinal tubules. We hypothesized that a novel mesoporous silica biomaterial (nano CaO@mesoporous silica, NCMS) containing nano-sized calcium oxide particles mixed with 30% phosphoric acid can efficiently occlude dentinal tubules and significantly reduce dentin permeability, even with the presence of pulpal pressure. This highly supersaturated Ca2+-and HPO4
2−ion-containing NCMS paste was brushed onto dentin surfaces, and the ions diffused deeply into the dentinal tubules and formed a CaHPO4·2H2O precipitation with a depth of 100 μm. The results of the dentin permeability tests showed that the novel mesoporous material exhibited a significant reduction in dentin permeability (p < 0.05), even under simulated pulpal pressure, as compared with our previously developed material, DP-bioglass, and a commercial desensitizing material, Seal & Protect®.

This cutting-edge study delves into regional magmatism in northern Taiwan through advanced 3-D P- and S-wave frequency-dependent attenuation tomography. Positioned at the dynamic convergence boundary ...between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, Taiwan experiences moderate earthquakes and intriguing volcanic activity, with a focus on the Tatun volcano group. Employing the Formosa seismic array for high-resolution results, our research identifies high-attenuation anomalies (low Q) beneath the northern Taiwan volcanic zone (NTVZ) and offshore submarine volcanoes, indicative of potential hydrothermal activities and magma reservoirs at varying depths. Additionally, we explore low-attenuation anomalies (high Q) in the forearc region of the Ryukyu subduction zone, suggestive of partial saturation linked to serpentinization processes resulting from seawater infiltration or forearc mantle hydration. These findings shed light on the complex geological features and provide essential insights into the crustal properties of northern Taiwan, contributing to a deeper understanding of its magmatic evolution and tectonic processes.
Despite the known heightened risk and burden of various somatic diseases in people with depression, very little is known about physical health multimorbidity (i.e. two or more physical health ...co-morbidities) in individuals with depression. This study explored physical health multimorbidity in people with clinical depression, subsyndromal depression and brief depressive episode across 43 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Cross-sectional, community-based data on 190 593 individuals from 43 LMICs recruited via the World Health Survey were analysed. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to assess the association between depression and physical multimorbidity.
Overall, two, three and four or more physical health conditions were present in 7.4, 2.4 and 0.9% of non-depressive individuals compared with 17.7, 9.1 and 4.9% among people with any depressive episode, respectively. Compared with those with no depression, subsyndromal depression, brief depressive episode and depressive episode were significantly associated with 2.62, 2.14 and 3.44 times higher odds for multimorbidity, respectively. A significant positive association between multimorbidity and any depression was observed across 42 of the 43 countries, with particularly high odds ratios (ORs) in China (OR 8.84), Laos (OR 5.08), Ethiopia (OR 4.99), the Philippines (OR 4.81) and Malaysia (OR 4.58). The pooled OR for multimorbidity and depression estimated by meta-analysis across 43 countries was 3.26 (95% confident interval 2.98-3.57).
Our large multinational study demonstrates that physical health multimorbidity is increased across the depression spectrum. Public health interventions are required to address this global health problem.
Abstract
Background
The impact of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) on disease severity is unclear. In this retrospective study, we compared the outcomes of patients infected with B.1.1.7, ...B.1.351, and B.1.617.2 with wild-type strains from early 2020.
Methods
National surveillance data from January to May 2021 were obtained and outcomes in relation to VOCs were explored. Detailed patient-level data from all patients with VOC infection admitted to our center between December 2020 and May 2021 were analyzed. Clinical outcomes were compared with a cohort of 846 patients admitted from January to April 2020.
Results
A total of 829 patients in Singapore in the study period were infected with these 3 VOCs. After adjusting for age and sex, B.1.617.2 was associated with higher odds of oxygen requirement, intensive care unit admission, or death (adjusted odds ratio aOR, 4.90; 95% confidence interval CI: 1.43-30.78). Of these patients, 157 were admitted to our center. After adjusting for age, sex, comorbidities, and vaccination, the aOR for pneumonia with B.1.617.2 was 1.88 (95% CI: .95-3.76) compared with wild-type. These differences were not seen with B.1.1.7 and B.1.351. Vaccination status was associated with decreased severity. B.1.617.2 was associated with significantly lower polymerase chain reaction cycle threshold (Ct) values and longer duration of Ct value ≤30 (median duration 18 days for B.1.617.2, 13 days for wild-type).
Conclusions
B.1.617.2 was associated with increased severity of illness, and with lower Ct values and longer viral shedding. These findings provide impetus for the rapid implementation of vaccination programs.
In this retrospective cohort study we found an association between infection with B.1.617.2 (Delta) and increased disease severity. B.1.617.2 was also associated with higher viral loads and prolonged duration of viral shedding. Vaccination remained protective.
Purpose In this work, we tested the hypothesis that microneedles provide a minimally invasive method to inject particles into the suprachoroidal space for drug delivery to the back of the eye. ...Methods A single, hollow microneedle was inserted into the sclera, and infused nanoparticle and microparticle suspensions into the suprachoroidal space. Experiments were performed on whole rabbit, pig, and human eyes ex vivo. Particle delivery was imaged using brightfield and fluorescence microscopy as well as microcomputed tomography. Results Microneedles were shown to deliver sulforhodamine B as well as nanoparticle and microparticle suspensions into the suprachoroidal space of rabbit, pig, and human eyes. Volumes up to 35 μL were administered consistently. Optimization of the delivery device parameters showed that microneedle length, pressure, and particle size played an important role in determining successful delivery into the suprachoroidal space. Needle lengths of 800-1,000 μm and applied pressures of 250-300 kPa provided most reliable delivery. Conclusions Microneedles were shown for the first time to deliver nanoparticle and microparticle suspensions into the suprachoroidal space of rabbit, pig and human eyes. This shows that microneedles may provide a minimally invasive method for controlled drug delivery to the back of the eye.
This research work used a preheated clinching process for joining aluminum alloy 5052-H32 (Al) and carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) sheets. The preheated and softened CFRTP sheets ...successfully undergo the excessive compression and bending in the process. Al and CFRTP sheets with a thickness of 1.6 mm thick were used to make Al/CFRTP clinch joints in lap-shear (LS) specimens. Effects of joining force, punch design, and die design on mechanical properties of Al/CFRTP clinch joints were investigated by quasi-static tensile tests and metallographic micrographs. An appropriate setup for the Al/CFRTP clinching process was obtained. Then, a complete fatigue test for Al/CFRTP dissimilar clinching joints was conducted to investigate the fatigue properties of Al/CFRTP clinch joints. The fatigue data were recorded, and the failure modes were analyzed and discussed.
Since December 2019, the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has garnered global attention due to its rapid transmission, which has infected more than two million people worldwide. Early detection of ...SARS-CoV-2 is one of the crucial interventions to control virus spread and dissemination. Molecular assays have been the gold standard to directly detect for the presence of viral genetic material in infected individuals. However, insufficient viral RNA at the point of detection may lead to false negative results. As such, it is important to also employ immune-based assays to determine one's exposure to SARS-CoV-2, as well as to assist in the surveillance of individuals with prior exposure to SARS-CoV-2. Within a span of 4 months, extensive studies have been done to develop serological systems to characterize the antibody profiles, as well as to identify and generate potentially neutralizing antibodies during SARS-CoV-2 infection. The vast diversity of novel findings has added value to coronavirus research, and a strategic consolidation is crucial to encompass the latest advances and developments. This review aims to provide a concise yet extensive collation of current immunoassays for SARS-CoV-2, while discussing the strengths, limitations and applications of antibody detection in SARS-CoV-2 research and control.
The aim of this review was to provide strong clinical evidence of the efficacy of deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus internus (GPi) in isolated inherited or idiopathic dystonia. ...Eligible studies were identified after a systematic literature review of the effects of bilateral GPi‐DBS in isolated dystonia. Absolute and percentage changes from baseline in the Burke–Fahn–Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale (BFMDRS) motor and disability scores were pooled, and associations between treatment effect and patient characteristics were explored using meta‐regression. In total, 24 studies were included in the meta‐analysis, comprising 523 patients. The mean absolute and percentage improvements in BFMDRS motor score at the last follow‐up (mean 32.5 months; 24 studies) were 26.6 points 95% confidence interval (CI), 22.4–30.8 and 65.2% (95% CI, 59.6–70.7), respectively. The corresponding changes in disability score at the last follow‐up (mean 32.9 months; 14 studies) were 6.4 points (95% CI, 5.0–7.8) and 58.6% (95% CI, 50.3–66.9). Multivariate meta‐regression of absolute scores indicated that higher BFMDRS motor and disability scores before surgery, together with younger age at time of surgery, were the main factors associated with significantly better DBS outcomes at the latest follow‐up. Reporting of safety data was frequently inconsistent and could not be included in the meta‐analysis. In conclusion, patients with isolated inherited or idiopathic dystonia significantly improved after GPi‐DBS. Better outcomes were associated with greater dystonia severity at baseline. These findings should be taken into consideration for improving patient selection for DBS.
Failure modes of spot friction welds made by a concave tool in lap-shear specimens of aluminum 6111-T4 sheets are first investigated based on experimental observations. Optical and scanning electron ...micrographs of the welds before and after failure under quasi-static and cyclic loading conditions are examined. The micrographs show that the failure modes of the welds under quasi-static and cyclic loading conditions are quite different. Under quasi-static loading conditions, the failure mainly starts from the necking of the upper sheet outside the weld. Under cyclic loading conditions, the experimental observations indicate two types of fatigue cracks. One type initiates and grows into the lower sheet outside the stir zone and another type initiates from the bend surface of the upper sheet outside the weld. The dominant fatigue cracks for the final failures of the welds are the kinked fatigue cracks growing in the lower sheet outside the stir zone. Based on the experimental observations of the paths of the dominant kinked fatigue cracks, a fatigue crack growth model is then adopted to estimate the fatigue lives of the spot friction welds. The global stress intensity factors and the local stress intensity factors for kinked cracks based on the recent published works for resistance spot welds and the Paris law for crack propagation are used in the fatigue crack growth model. The fatigue life estimations based on the fatigue crack growth model with the global and local stress intensity factors as functions of the kink length and the experimentally determined kink angles agree well with the experimental results.
