Endothelin-1 (ET-1) induces contraction of vascular smooth muscle through binding to endothelin type A receptor (ET
AR). COS-7 cells stably expressing high levels of the ET
AR were established ...(designated COS-7(ET

125IET-1 binding was inhibited by ET-1 and the ET
AR antagonist BQ-610, but not by the endothelin type B receptor (ET
BR) antagonist BQ-788. In clones expressing two ET
AR mutants containing D46N or R53Q substitutions in the first extracellular domain of the receptor,
125IET-1 binding activity was dramatically reduced. This suggests that these single amino acid substitutions alter the three-dimensional structure of the ligand-binding domain of the ET
AR. Using COS-7(ET
AR) cell, we showed that Ca
2+ or Mg
2+ was essential for ET-1 binding to the ET
AR and that ET-1 treatment induced postreceptor signaling, that is, intracellular accumulation of cyclic AMP (cAMP) and Ca
2+ mobilization. The COS-7(ET
AR) established in this study will be a useful tool for screening ET-1 antagonists for treating hypertension.
Summary Background Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) often causes disseminated infection in patients at an advanced stage of HIV infection; however, peritonitis associated with disseminated MAC ...infection is rare. Methods In this report, we describe five cases of MAC peritonitis in AIDS patients at our hospital, and analyze these cases alongside 11 previously published cases found in the literature. Results Most of the AIDS patients with MAC peritonitis had CD4 counts of <50 cells/μl and elevated alkaline phosphatase levels. Other than ascites, MAC was also isolated from other sterile and non-sterile sites. Of note, six patients (37.5%) presented with chylous ascites. Conclusions Despite therapy, MAC peritonitis is associated with a grave outcome.

Some cable-supported bridges have been designed or built in mountainous areas in Taiwan. Due to the complex terrain, not only the variations of wind speed but also the ...possibility of large angle of wind attack should be considered in the investigations of the aerodynamic responses of the cable-supported bridge built in these areas. The angle of wind attack for the bridge built in the complex terrain has been found in the literature as large as fifteen degrees or more. At the large angle of wind attack, the difficulties have risen in full bridge model tests. Therefore, the measurement of the section model responses is the only way to investigate the aerodynamic behavior of the bridges built in the complex terrain. Effects of large angles of wind attack on the flutter wind speeds and buffeting responses of bridges are investigated in this thesis. A typical pedestrian suspension bridge is chosen as the example for the investigation.
The experimental results show that the flutter wind speeds
A mini-projector prototype employing a LED light source, a nontelecentric structure, and an LCOS panel for application in the integrated 3D display was fabricated. A seamless image was obtained by ...tilting an array of mini-projectors. Seamless quality was created by the excellent uniformity of the projection intensity on the mini-projector's screen, which was simulated as 98.34%. Great uniformity can be realized by optimizing the design of the light source and the optics configuration, which is the key to such realization.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well known complication of interferon therapy for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, but resolution of interferon-induced DM was rarely reported. In HIV and HCV ...co-infected patients, only two cases of incident DM during interferon therapy were reported and both cases required permanent insulin treatment. We report the first case of HIV/HCV co-infected patient who developed diabetic ketoacidosis during treatment for chronic HCV infection with complete resolution of DM after treatment cessation. Review of reported cases indicates that pancreatic autoantibodies and human leukocyte antigen haplotypes may predict the outcome of interferon-induced diabetes.
Flow-based super-resolution (SR) models have demonstrated astonishing capabilities in generating high-quality images. However, these methods encounter several challenges during image generation, such ...as grid artifacts, exploding inverses, and suboptimal results due to a fixed sampling temperature. To overcome these issues, this work introduces a conditional learned prior to the inference phase of a flow-based SR model. This prior is a latent code predicted by our proposed latent module conditioned on the low-resolution image, which is then transformed by the flow model into an SR image. Our framework is designed to seamlessly integrate with any contemporary flow-based SR model without modifying its architecture or pre-trained weights. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed framework through extensive experiments and ablation analyses. The proposed framework successfully addresses all the inherent issues in flow-based SR models and enhances their performance in various SR scenarios. Our code is available at: https://github.com/liyuantsao/FlowSR-LP
The seroprevalence of viral hepatitis and spectrum of infectious complications among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected injection drug users (IDUs) remains unclear in Taiwan, although there ...has been a significant increase in the prevalence of HIV infection among IDUs in the last 2 to 3 years.
The medical records of HIV-infected IDUs who sought medical care at a referral hospital for HIV care from June 1994 to December 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. A standardized case record form was used to collect demographic, clinical, laboratory and microbiologic data.
During the 12-year study period, a total of 102 HIV-infected IDUs with a median age of 39.5 years (range, 19 to 73 years) sought HIV care at the referral hospital. The male-to-female case ratio was 6 and males were significantly older than females (39.5 vs 28 years, p<0.001). The overall median CD4+ cell count and plasma HIV RNA load by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction at enrollment were 374 cells/microL and 4.45 log(10) copies/mL, respectively. The CD4+ cell count of HIV-infected IDUs enrolled after year 2003 was significantly higher than those enrolled before 2003 (438 vs 23 cells/microL, p<0.001). The seroprevalence of hepatitis C virus (86.6% overall) increased over time, while that of hepatitis B virus decreased in the patients born after 1984, when nationwide hepatitis B vaccination was started in Taiwan. Gram-positive bacteria were causative for 69.7% of the 33 bacteremic episodes, and Staphylococcus aureus was the leading pathogen (16 episodes), with methicillin-sensitive S. aureus accounting for 11 bacteremic episodes (33.3%). The most common bacterial infection was infective endocarditis. Tuberculosis occurred more frequently in men, and extrapulmonary tuberculosis was more common than pulmonary tuberculosis and was associated with a lower CD4+ count.
Bacteremia, infective endocarditis and tuberculosis were the three most common patterns of infection among HIV-infected IDUs who sought medical care at a referral hospital; and methicillin-sensitive S. aureus was the most common etiology of bacteremia. The high seroprevalence of hepatitis B and C and subsequent hepatic complications may present a future challenge to the health care system.
A new microsporidium was isolated from
Ocinara lida Moore (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae), a pest of
Ficus microcarpa L. f. in Taiwan. The microsporidium produces systemic infections in
O. lida larvae; the ...midgut epithelium, Malpighian tubules, and midgut muscle tissues were the target tissues for this isolate, and atrophied fat body tissues were found in heavily infected larvae. Two types of spores were observed, diplokaroytic spores with 11–13 coils of polar tube, and monokaryotic spores with 12 coils of the polar tube that developed within a sporophorous vesicle to form octospores. Electron-dense granules were abundant in the episporontal space of the sporophorous vesicles, and were similar to those of
Vairimorpha invictae isolated from
Solenopsis invicta, but different from granules or inclusions of other
Vairimorpha species. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of the small subunit ribosomal DNA sequence, this isolate is unique within the
Vairimorpha complex. Morphological and genetic characters showed this isolate to be a new species. It is placed in the genus
Vairimorpha and is described as
Vairimorpha ocinarae n. sp.

In this paper, we present the design and silicon characterization results of an 8Mb STT-MRAM macro in 16nm FinFET Logic CMOS process. The STT-MRAM film stack is carefully designed to achieve both ...solder-reflow tolerance and short write pulse of 50nS. A merged reference scheme with reverse connected reference cells are proposed for read-disturb immunity. A read access time of 9nS is achieved from -40C to 125C and Vdd=0.8V±10%, making it suitable for high performance MCU applications. Silicon data measurement is presented to demonstrate a logic-process compatible, perpendicular STT-MRAM in 16nm FinFET CMOS process. The bit-error-rate has achieved zero fail-bit-count at 50-percentile for the 8Mb test-chip at wafer level.
