We derive the distance and structure of the Perseus molecular cloud by combining trigonometric parallaxes from Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations, taken as part of the GOBELINS survey and ...Gaia Data Release 2. Based on our VLBA astrometry, we obtain a distance of 321 10 pc for IC 348. This is fully consistent with the mean distance of 320 26 measured by Gaia. The VLBA observations toward NGC 1333 are insufficient to claim a successful distance measurement to this cluster. Gaia parallaxes, on the other hand, yield a mean distance of 293 22 pc. Hence, the distance along the line of sight between the eastern and western edges of the cloud is ∼30 pc, which is significantly smaller than previously inferred. We use Gaia proper motions and published radial velocities to derive the spatial velocities of a selected sample of stars. The average velocity vectors with respect to the LSR are = (−6.1 1.6, 6.8 1.1, −0.9 1.2) and (−6.4 1.0, 2.1 1.4, −2.4 1.0) km s−1 for IC 348 and NGC 1333, respectively. Finally, our analysis of the kinematics of the stars has shown that there is no clear evidence of expansion, contraction, or rotational motions within the clusters.
We present Gaia-DR2 astrometry of a sample of YSO candidates in Ophiuchus, Serpens Main, and Serpens South/W40 in the Aquila Rift, which had been mainly identified by their infrared excess with ...Spitzer. We compare the Gaia-DR2 parallaxes against published and new parallaxes obtained from our Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) program Gould's Belt Distances Survey. We obtain consistent results between Gaia and the VLBA for the mean parallaxes in each of the regions analyzed here. We see small offsets, when comparing mean values, of a few tens of microarcseconds in the parallaxes, which are either introduced by the Gaia zero-point error or due to a selection effect by Gaia toward the brightest, less obscured stars. Gaia-DR2 data alone conclusively places Serpens Main and Serpens South at the same distance, as we first inferred from VLBA data alone in a previous publication. Thus, Serpens Main, Serpens South, and W40 are all part of the same complex of molecular clouds, located at a mean distance of 436 9 pc. In Ophiuchus, both Gaia and VLBA suggest a small parallax gradient across the cloud, and the distance changes from 144.2 1.3 to 138.4 2.6 pc when going from L1689 to L1688.
We present 3 mm ALMA continuum and line observations at resolutions of 6.5 au and 13 au, respectively, toward the Class 0 system IRAS 16293-2422 A. The continuum observations reveal two compact ...sources toward IRAS 16293-2422 A, coinciding with compact ionized gas emission previously observed at radio wavelengths (A1 and A2), confirming the long-known radio sources as protostellar. The emission toward A2 is resolved and traces a dust disk with an FWHM size of ∼12 au, while the emission toward A1 sets a limit to the FWHM size of the dust disk of ∼4 au. We also detect spatially resolved molecular kinematic tracers near the protostellar disks. Several lines of the J = 5−4 rotational transition of HNCO, NH2CHO, and t-HCOOH are detected, with which we derived individual line-of-sight velocities. Using these together with the CS (J = 2−1), we fit Keplerian profiles toward the individual compact sources and derive masses of the central protostars. The kinematic analysis indicates that A1 and A2 are a bound binary system. Using this new context for the previous 30 yr of Very Large Array observations, we fit orbital parameters to the relative motion between A1 and A2 and find that the combined protostellar mass derived from the orbit is consistent with the masses derived from the gas kinematics. Both estimations indicate masses consistently higher (0.5 M1 M2 2 ) than previous estimations using lower-resolution observations of the gas kinematics. The ALMA high-resolution data provides a unique insight into the gas kinematics and masses of a young deeply embedded bound binary system.
We present new trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of young stellar objects in the Taurus molecular cloud complex from observations collected with the Very Long Baseline Array as part of the ...Gould's Belt Distances Survey. We detected 26 young stellar objects and derived trigonometric parallaxes for 18 stars with an accuracy of 0.3% to a few percent. We modeled the orbits of six binaries and determined the dynamical masses of the individual components in four of these systems (V1023 Tau, T Tau S, V807 Tau, and V1000 Tau). Our results are consistent with the first trigonometric parallaxes delivered by the Gaia satellite and reveal the existence of significant depth effects. We find that the central portion of the dark cloud Lynds 1495 is located at d =129.5 0.3 pc, while the B216 clump in the filamentary structure connected to it is at d = 158.1 1.2 pc. The closest and remotest stars in our sample are located at d = 126.6 1.7 pc and d = 162.7 0.8 pc, yielding a distance difference of about 36 pc. We also provide a new distance estimate for HL Tau that was recently imaged. Finally, we compute the spatial velocity of the stars with published radial velocity and investigate the kinematic properties of the various clouds and gas structures in this region.
ABSTRACT We present the first results of the Gould's Belt Distances Survey (GOBELINS), a project aimed at measuring the proper motion and trigonometric parallax of a large sample of young stars in ...nearby regions using multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) radio observations. Enough VLBA detections have now been obtained for 16 stellar systems in Ophiuchus to derive their parallax and proper motion. This leads to distance determinations for individual stars with an accuracy of 0.3 to a few percent. In addition, the orbits of six multiple systems were modelled by combining absolute positions with VLBA (and, in some cases, near-infrared) angular separations. Twelve stellar systems are located in the dark cloud Lynds 1688; the individual distances for this sample are highly consistent with one another and yield a mean parallax for Lynds 1688 of mas, corresponding to a distance pc. This represents an accuracy greater than 1%. Three systems for which astrometric elements could be measured are located in the eastern streamer (Lynds 1689) and yield an estimate of mas, corresponding to a distance pc. This suggests that the eastern streamer is located about 10 pc farther than the core, but this conclusion needs to be confirmed by observations of additional sources in the eastern streamer (currently being collected). From the measured proper motions, we estimate the one-dimensional velocity dispersion in Lynds 1688 to be 2.8 1.8 and 3.0 2.0 km s−1, in R.A. and decl., respectively; these are larger than, but still consistent within of, those found in other studies.
Abstract
Using James Webb Space Telescope near-infrared data of the inner Orion Nebula, Pearson & McCaughrean detected 40 Jupiter-mass binary objects (JuMBOs). These systems are not associated with ...stars and their components have masses of giant Jupiter-like planets and separations in the plane of the sky of order ∼100 au. The existence of these wide free-floating planetary-mass binaries was unexpected in our current theories of star and planet formation. Here we report the radio continuum (6.1 and 10.0 GHz) Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array detection of a counterpart to JuMBO 24. The radio emission appears to be steady at a level of ∼50
μ
Jy over timescales of days and years. We set an upper limit of ≃15 km s
−1
to the velocity of the radio source in the plane of the sky. As in the near-infrared, the radio emission seems to be coming from both components of the binary.
ABSTRACT We present a 1.3 mm dust continuum survey toward nine Class 0 protostars and two Class I protostars in the Perseus molecular cloud, using CARMA with a resolution of ∼0 3 (70 AU). This sample ...approximately doubles the number of Class 0 protostars observed with spatial resolutions <100 AU at millimeter wavelengths, enabling the presence of large protostellar disks and proto-binary systems to be probed. We have detected flattened structures with radii >100 AU around two sources (L1448 IRS2 and Per-emb-14), and these sources may be strong disk candidates. Marginally resolved structures within 30° of perpendicular to the outflow are found toward three protostars (L1448 IRS3C, IRAS 03282+3035, L1448C) and are considered disk candidates. Two others (L1448 IRS3B, IRAS 03292+3039) have complex resolved structures, possibly indicative of massive, fragmenting inner envelopes or disks; L1448 IRS3B also has evidence for a companion separated by 0 9 (∼210 AU). The candidate first hydrostatic core L1451-MMS is marginally resolved on 1″ scales and the Class 0 protostar IC 348-MMS and does not have strong indications of resolved structure at any scale. The strong disk candidate sources were followed up with C18O ( ) observations; we detect velocity gradients that are consistent with the expected rotation axis, but without enough sensitivity to determine if it is Keplerian. We compare the observed visibility amplitudes to radiative transfer models of protostellar envelopes and disks. The visibility amplitude ratios show that a compact component (possibly a disk) is necessary for five of nine Class 0 sources. An envelope-only scenario cannot be ruled out for the other four Class 0 sources. We conclude that there is evidence for the formation of large disks in the Class 0 phase, but Class 0 disks likely have a range of radii and masses that depend on the initial conditions of their parent cores.
After almost 20 years of hunting, only about a dozen hot corinos, hot regions enriched in interstellar complex organic molecules (iCOMs), are known. Of them, many are binary systems with the two ...components showing drastically different molecular spectra. Two obvious questions arise. Why are hot corinos so difficult to find and why do their binary components seem chemically different? The answer to both questions could be a high dust opacity that would hide the molecular lines. To test this hypothesis, we observed methanol lines at centimeter wavelengths, where dust opacity is negligible, using the Very Large Array interferometer. We targeted the NGC 1333 IRAS 4A binary system, for which one of the two components, 4A1, has a spectrum deprived of iCOMs lines when observed at millimeter wavelengths, while the other component, 4A2, is very rich in iCOMs. We found that centimeter methanol lines are similarly bright toward 4A1 and 4A2. Their non-LTE analysis indicates gas density and temperature ( cm−3 and 100-190 K), methanol column density (∼1019 cm−2), and extent (∼35 au in radius) similar in 4A1 and 4A2, proving that both are hot corinos. Furthermore, the comparison with previous methanol line millimeter observations allows us to estimate the optical depth of the dust in front of 4A1 and 4A2, respectively. The obtained values explain the absence of iCOMs line emission toward 4A1 at millimeter wavelengths and indicate that the abundances toward 4A2 are underestimated by ∼30%. Therefore, centimeter observations are crucial for the correct study of hot corinos, their census, and their molecular abundances.
Using multiepoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations, we have measured the trigonometric parallax of the weak-line T Tauri star HP Tau/G2 in Taurus. The best fit yields a distance of 161.2 - ...0.9 pc, suggesting that the eastern portion of Taurus (where HP Tau/G2 is located) corresponds to the far side of the complex. Previous VLBA observations have shown that T Tau, to the south of the complex, is at an intermediate distance of about 147 pc, whereas the region around L1495 corresponds to the near side at roughly 130 pc. Our observations of only four sources are still too coarse to enable a reliable determination of the three-dimensional structure of the entire Taurus star-forming complex. They do demonstrate, however, that VLBA observations of multiple sources in a given star-forming region have the potential not only to provide a very accurate estimate of its mean distance, but also to reveal its internal structure. The proper motion measurements obtained simultaneously with the parallax allowed us to study the kinematics of the young stars in Taurus. Combining the four observations available so far, we estimate the peculiar velocity of Taurus to be about 10.6 km s-1 almost completely in a direction parallel to the Galactic plane. Using our improved distance measurement, we have refined the determination of the position on the H-R diagram of HP Tau/G2, and of two other members of the HP Tau group (HP Tau itself and HP Tau/G3). Most pre-main-sequence evolutionary models predict significantly discrepant ages (by 5 Myr) for those three stars-expected to be coeval. Only in the models of Palla & Stahler do they fall on a single isochrone (at 3 Myr).
ABSTRACT We have extended the time baseline for observations of the proper motions of radio sources in the Orion BN/KL region from 14.7 to 22.5 years. We present improved determinations for the ...sources BN and I. In addition, we address the proper motions of the double radio source n, that have been questioned in the literature. We confirm that all three sources are moving away at transverse velocities of tens of kilometers per second from a region in-between them, where they were located about 500 years ago. Source n exhibits a new component that we interpret as due to a one-sided ejection of free-free emitting plasma that took place after 2006.36. We used the highly accurate relative proper motions between sources BN and I to determine that their closest separation took place in the year 1475 6, when they were within ∼100 au or less from each other in the plane of the sky.
