Aims. The radio galaxy NGC 1275, recently identified as a very high energy (VHE, >100 GeV) γ-ray emitter by MAGIC, is one of the few non-blazar active galactic nuclei detected in the VHE regime. The ...purpose of this work is to better understand the origin of the γ-ray emission and locate it within the galaxy. Methods. We studied contemporaneous multifrequency observations of NGC 1275 and modeled the overall spectral energy distribution. We analyzed unpublished MAGIC observations carried out between October 2009 and February 2010, and the previously published observations taken between August 2010 and February 2011. We studied the multiband variability and correlations by analyzing data of Fermi-LAT in the 100 MeV–100 GeV energy band, as well as Chandra (X-ray), KVA (optical), and MOJAVE (radio) data taken during the same period. Results. Using customized Monte Carlo simulations corresponding to early MAGIC stereoscopic data, we detect NGC 1275 also in the earlier MAGIC campaign. The flux level and energy spectra are similar to the results of the second campaign. The monthly light curve above 100 GeV shows a hint of variability at the 3.6σ level. In the Fermi-LAT band, both flux and spectral shape variabilities are reported. The optical light curve is also variable and shows a clear correlation with the γ-ray flux above 100 MeV. In radio, three compact components are resolved in the innermost part of the jet. One of these components shows a similar trend as the Fermi-LAT and KVA light curves. The γ-ray spectra measured simultaneously with MAGIC and Fermi-LAT from 100 MeV to 650 GeV can be well fitted either by a log-parabola or by a power-law with a subexponential cutoff for the two observation campaigns. A single-zone synchrotron-self-Compton model, with an electron spectrum following a power-law with an exponential cutoff, can explain the broadband spectral energy distribution and the multifrequency behavior of the source. However, this model suggests an untypical low bulk-Lorentz factor or a velocity alignment closer to the line of sight than the parsec-scale radio jet.
Data from an ethnobotanical study were analyzed to see if they were in agreement with the biochemical basis of the apparency hypothesis based on an analysis of a pharmacopeia in a rural community ...adjacent to the Araripe National Forest (Floresta Nacional do Araripe - FLONA) in northeastern Brazil. The apparency hypothesis considers two groups of plants, apparent and non-apparent, that are characterized by conspicuity for herbivores (humans) and their chemical defenses.
This study involved 153 interviewees and used semi-structured interviews. The plants were grouped by habit and lignification to evaluate the behavior of these categories in terms of ethnospecies richness, use value and practical and commercial importance. Information about sites for collecting medicinal plants was also obtained. The salience of the ethnospecies was calculated. G-tests were used to test for differences in ethnospecies richness among collection sites and the Kruskal-Wallis test to identify differences in the use values of plants depending on habit and lignifications (e.g. plants were classes as woody or non-woody, the first group comprising trees, shrubs, and lignified climbers (vines) and the latter group comprising herbs and non-lignified climbers). Spearman's correlation test was performed to relate salience to use value and these two factors with the commercial value of the plants.
A total of 222 medicinal plants were cited. Herbaceous and woody plants exhibited the highest ethnospecies richness, the non-woody and herbaceous plants had the most practical value (current use), and anthropogenic areas were the main sources of woody and non-woody medicinal plants; herbs and trees were equally versatile in treating diseases and did not differ with regard to use value. Trees were highlighted as the most commercially important growth habit.
From the perspective of its biochemical fundamentals, the apparency hypothesis does not have predictive potential to explain the use value and commercial value of medicinal plants. In other hand, the herbaceous habit showed the highest ethnospecies richness in the community pharmacopeia, which is an expected prediction, corroborating the apparency hypothesis.
The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of melting and casting procedures and the cervical finish line design on the marginal fit of nickel-chromium-titanium alloy crowns. Sixty ...standardized specimens were prepared to receive metal-ceramic crowns and were divided into two groups according to the cervical finish line: chamfer or rounded shoulder. Three melting and casting procedures were analyzed: (1) induction-centrifuge (IC), (2) gas oxygen torch-centrifuge (TC), and (3) induction-vacuum/pressure (IP). The marginal fit was measured with an image analysis system. Significant differences (P =.005) were observed among the groups, with TC showing the lowest discrepancies (45.87 μm). No significant differences were observed between the two finish lines. The accuracy of fit achieved for the groups analyzed may be regarded as within the range of clinical acceptance.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease in which thick, sticky mucus is produced in the lungs (and other organs) that impairs ciliary clearance, leading to respiratory problems, increased chronic ...bacterial infections, and decreased lung function. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the primary bacterial pathogens colonizing the lungs of CF patients. This study aimed to characterize the genetic relatedness of S. aureus, its presence in children with CF, and its cytotoxic activity in THP1 cell-derived macrophages (THP1m).
Genetic relatedness of S. aureus isolates from a cohort of 50 children with CF was determined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The VITEK 2 automated system was used to determine antimicrobial susceptibility, and methicillin-resistance S. aureus (MRSA) was determined by diffusion testing using cefoxitin disk. The presence of mecA and lukPV genes was determined by the polymerase chain reaction and cytotoxic activity of S.aureus on THP1m by CytoTox 96® assay.
From 51 S. aureus isolates from 50 children with CF, we identified 34pulsotypes by PFGE. Of the 50 children, 12 (24%) were colonized by more than one pulsotype, and 5/34 identified pulsotypes(14.7%) were shared between unrelated children. In addition, 3/34 pulsotypes (8.8%) were multidrug-resistant (MDR), and2/34 (5.9%) were MRSA. Notably, 30/34 pulsotypes (88.2%) exhibited cytotoxicity on THP1m cells and 14/34 (41.2%) alteredTHP1m monolayers. No isolate carried the lukPV gene.
Although a low frequency of MRSA and MDR wasfound among clinical isolates, most of the S. aureus pulsotypes identified were cytotoxic on THP1m.
The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of two finish line configurations on the marginal accuracy of Procera AllCeram crowns.
Twenty mechanized specimens of brass were fabricated ...for complete-coverage crowns. Two finish line designs were used: chamfer and rounded shoulder. AllCeram crowns were fabricated, and the fit of the crowns to the dies was recorded from the buccal and lingual margins. An image-analysis program was used to measure the gap. The results were subjected to statistical analysis using a Student's t test for separate samples and Student's paired t test.
No significant differences were observed between the buccal and lingual measurements. When the values of the buccal and lingual measurements were averaged, there were no significant differences in the marginal gap, horizontal discrepancy, or internal adaptation of the axial wall, but there were significant differences in the vertical discrepancy, absolute marginal discrepancy, and internal discrepancy between the two finish line designs.
The marginal gap was within the range of clinical acceptability. Some of the variables were influenced by the two finish lines tested.
Taxonomic composition and spatio-temporal abundance of the ichthyofauna in Presidio River, Sinaloa, Mexico. The Rio Presidio in the southern Sinaloa, Mexico belongs to Nearctic-Neotropical ...zoogeographical transition zone, where its fish fauna could manifest changes in the abundance and distribution of the species during rainy and dry periods. The main objective of this study was to describe the taxonomic composition and spatial and temporal abundance of the fish fauna from the lower and middle Rio Presidio, by means of bimonthly samplings from April 2008 to February 2009. Forty fish species (39 native and 1 exotic) belonging to 32 genera and 19 families were registered. Two families (Gerreidae and Poeciliidae) contained the highest numbers of species (five and four, respectively). Six species (Lile stolifera, Oreochromis aureus, Awaous banana, Anchoa analis, Gobiomorus maculatus and Atherinella crystallina) in this order of importance contributed with almost 49 % of the total fish abundance. Species richness and salinity showed a direct relationship and an inverse relationship with the altitude. Based on the coefficient of similarity of species among sites two fish assemblages were identified. The first assemblage formed by species from marine derivation (peripheral) occurring in the lower part of the river, and the second assemblage by secondary freshwater species in the middle part. The higher fish species similarity observed in August and September was under the influence of the highest flows of the rainy period. Twenty-seven 27 species showed affinity to the Tropical Eastern Pacific Region, six species to the Neotropical region and two to the Nearctic region (Dorosoma smithi and Ictalurus cf. pricei ); one species has an Amphiatlantic distribution (Mugil curema), another is circumtropical (Mugil cephalus), two species have Amphiamerican distribution (A. monticola and G. cinereus), and one is exotic (O. aureus). AbstractBackground. Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE), having demonstrated survival benefits, is the treatment of choice in intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma, although there is great ...heterogeneity in its clinical application. Material and methods. A survey was sent to the Madrid Regional hospitals to assess applicability, indications and treatment protocols. The assessment was made overall and according to the type of hospital (groups A vs. B and C). Results. Seventeen out of 22 hospitals responded (8/8 group A, 9/ 14 group B-C). All do/indicate transarterial chemoembolisation, 13/17 at their own facilities. Eight of the 17 hospitals have multidisciplinary groups (5/8 A, 3/9 B-C). Nine hospitals perform > 20 procedures/year (7 group A), and 6 from group B-C request/perform < 10/year. It is performed on an “on-demand” basis in 12/17. In 5 hospitals, all the procedures use drug-eluting beads loaded with doxorubicin. The average number of procedures per patient is 2. The mean time from diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma to transarterial chemoembolisation is ≤ 2 months in 16 hospitals. In 11/17 hospitals, response is assessed by computed tomography. Radiological response is measured without specific criteria in 12/17 and the other five hospitals (4 group A) assessed using standardised criteria. Conclusion. Uniformity among the Madrid Regional hospitals was found in the indication and treatment regimen. The use of DEB-TACE has become the preferred form of TACE in clinical practice. The differentiating factors for the more specialised hospitals are a larger volume of procedures, decision-making by multidisciplinary committees and assessment of radiological response more likely to be standardised.
The current standard front-line therapy for patients with diffuse large-B cell lymphoma (DLBCL)—rituximab plus cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP)—is found to be ...ineffective in up to one-third of them. Thus, their early identification is an important step towards testing alternative treatment options. In this retrospective study, we assessed the ability of

F-FDG PET/CT imaging features (radiomic + PET conventional parameters) plus clinical data, alone or in combination with genomic parameters to predict complete response to first-line treatment. Imaging features were extracted from images prior treatment. Lesions were segmented as a whole to reflect tumor burden. Multivariate logistic regression predictive models for response to first-line treatment trained with clinical and imaging features, or with clinical, imaging, and genomic features were developed. For imaging feature selection, a manual selection approach or a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) for dimensionality reduction were applied. Confusion matrices and performance metrics were obtained to assess model performance. Thirty-three patients (median range age, 58 49–69 years) were included, of whom 23 (69.69%) achieved long-term complete response. Overall, the inclusion of genomic features improved prediction ability. The best performance metrics were obtained with the combined model including genomic data and built applying the LDA method (AUC of 0.904, and 90% of balanced accuracy). The amplification of
BCL6
was found to significantly contribute to explain response to first-line treatment in both manual and LDA models. Among imaging features, radiomic features reflecting lesion distribution heterogeneity (
GLSZM_GrayLevelVariance, Sphericity
and
GLCM_Correlation
) were predictors of response in manual models. Interestingly, when the dimensionality reduction was applied, the whole set of imaging features-mostly composed of radiomic features-significantly contributed to explain response to front-line therapy. A nomogram predictive for response to first-line treatment was constructed. In summary, a combination of imaging features, clinical variables and genomic data was able to successfully predict complete response to first-line treatment in DLBCL patients, with the amplification of
BCL6
as the genetic marker retaining the highest predictive value. Additionally, a panel of imaging features may provide important information when predicting treatment response, with lesion dissemination-related radiomic features deserving especial attention.
