Scattering of solar radiation by aerosol particles is highly dependent on relative humidity (RH) as hygroscopic particles take up water with increasing RH. To achieve a better understanding of the ...effect of aerosol hygroscopic growth on light scattering properties and radiative forcing, the aerosol scattering coefficients at RH in the range of 40 to ~ 90 % were measured using a humidified nephelometer system in the Yangtze River Delta of China in March 2013. In addition, the aerosol size distribution and chemical composition were measured. During the observation period, the mean and standard deviation (SD) of enhancement factors at RH = 85 % for the scattering coefficient (f(85 %)), backscattering coefficient (fb(85 %)), and hemispheric backscatter fraction (f beta (85 %)) were 1.58 plus or minus 0.12, 1.25 plus or minus 0.07, and 0.79 plus or minus 0.04, respectively, i.e., aerosol scattering coefficient and backscattering coefficient increased by 58 and 25 % as the RH increased from 40 to 85 %. Concurrently, the aerosol hemispheric backscatter fraction decreased by 21 %. The relative amount of organic matter (OM) or inorganics in PM1 was found to be a main factor determining the magnitude of f(RH). The highest values of f(RH) corresponded to the aerosols with a small fraction of OM, and vice versa. The relative amount of NO3- in fine particles was strongly correlated with f(85 %), which suggests that NO3- played a vital role in aerosol hygroscopic growth during this study. The mass fraction of nitrate also had a close relationship to the curvature of the humidograms; higher mass fractions of nitrate were associated with humidograms that had the least curvature. Aerosol hygroscopic growth caused a 47 % increase in the calculated aerosol direct radiative forcing at 85 % RH, compared to the forcing at 40 % RH.

years of data recorded by the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE). This is the first time that an experiment directly measures the cosmic ray protons up to ~100 TeV with high statistics. The measured spectrum confirms the spectral hardening at ~300 GeV found by previous experiments and reveals a softening at ~13.6 TeV, with the spectral index changing from ~2.60 to ~2.85. Our result suggests the existence of a new spectral feature of cosmic rays at energies lower than the so-called knee and sheds new light on the origin of Galactic cosmic rays.

We study the process e^{+}e^{-}→Λ_{c}^{+}Λover ¯_{c}^{-} at twelve center-of-mass energies from 4.6119 to 4.9509 GeV using data samples collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The ...Born cross sections and effective form factors (|G_{eff}|) are determined with unprecedented precision after combining the single and double-tag methods based on the decay process Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+}. Flat cross sections around 4.63 GeV are obtained and no indication of the resonant structure Y(4630), as reported by Belle, is found. In addition, no oscillatory behavior is discerned in the |G_{eff}| energy dependence of Λ_{c}^{+}, in contrast to what is seen for the proton and neutron cases. Analyzing the cross section together with the polar-angle distribution of the Λ_{c}^{+} baryon at each energy point, the moduli of electric and magnetic form factors (|G_{E}| and |G_{M}|) are extracted and separated. For the first time, the energy dependence of the form factor ratio |G_{E}/G_{M}| is observed, which can be well described by an oscillatory function.
Cross-resonance (CR) gates have emerged as a promising scheme for fault-tolerant quantum computation with fixed-frequency qubits. We experimentally implement an entangling CR gate by using a ...microwave-only control in a tunable coupling superconducting circuit, where the tunable coupler provides extra degrees of freedom to verify optimal conditions for constructing a CR gate. By developing a three-qubit Hamiltonian tomography protocol, we systematically investigate the dependency of gate fidelities on spurious qubit interactions and present the first experimental approach to the evaluation of the perturbation impact arising from spectator qubits. Our results reveal that the spectator qubits lead to reductions in CR gate fidelity dependent on Z Z interactions and particular frequency detunings between spectator and gate qubits. The target spectator demonstrates a more serious impact than the control spectator under a standard echo pulse scheme, whereas the degradation of gate fidelity is observed up to 22.5% as both the spectators are present with a modest ZZ coupling to the computational qubits. Our experiments uncover an optimal CR operation regime, and the method we develop here can readily be applied to improving other kinds of two-qubit gates in large-scale quantum circuits.
Background
Delirium is common in elderly patients after surgery and is associated with poor outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the impact of intraoperative dexmedetomidine on the incidence of ...delirium in elderly patients undergoing major surgery.
Methods
This was a randomized double‐blind placebo‐controlled trial. Elderly patients (aged 60 years or more) scheduled to undergo major non‐cardiac surgery were randomized into two groups. Patients in the intervention group received a loading dose of dexmedetomidine 0·6 μg/kg 10 min before induction of anaesthesia followed by a continuous infusion (0·5 μg per kg per h) until 1 h before the end of surgery. Patients in the control group received volume‐matched normal saline in the same schedule. The primary outcome was the incidence of delirium during the first 5 days after surgery. Delirium was assessed with the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) for non‐ventilated patients and CAM for the Intensive Care Unit for ventilated patients.
Results
In total, 309 patients who received dexmedetomidine and 310 control patients were included in the intention‐to‐treat analysis. The incidence of delirium within 5 days of surgery was lower with dexmedetomidine treatment: 5·5 per cent (17 of 309) versus 10·3 per cent (32 of 310) in the control group (relative risk (RR) 0·53, 95 per cent c.i. 0·30 to 0·94; P = 0·026). The overall incidence of complications at 30 days was also lower after dexmedetomidine (19·4 per cent (60 of 309) versus 26·1 per cent (81 of 310) for controls; RR 0·74, 0·55 to 0·99, P = 0·047).
Conclusion
Intraoperative dexmedetomidine halved the risk of delirium in the elderly after major non‐cardiac surgery. Registration number: ChiCTR‐IPR‐15007654 (

El delirio después de la cirugía es frecuente en los pacientes de edad avanzada y se asocia con malos resultados. El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar el impacto de la administración intraoperatoria de dexmedetomidina en la incidencia de delirio en pacientes mayores sometidos a operaciones de cirugía mayor.
Métodos
Se trataba de un ensayo aleatorizado, doble ciego y controlado con placebo. Un total de 620 pacientes mayores (60 años o más) fueron programados para ser sometidos a intervenciones (no cardiacas) de cirugía mayor y se aleatorizaron a dos grupos. Los pacientes en el grupo de intervención recibieron una dosis de carga de dexmedetomidina (0,6 μg/kg, 10 minutos antes de la inducción anestésica) seguida de una infusión continua (0,5 μg/kg/h) hasta 1 h antes de la finalización de la cirugía. Los pacientes del grupo control recibieron el mismo volumen de suero salino siguiendo la misma pauta. El resultado principal era la incidencia de delirio durante los primeros 5 días postoperatorios. Para la valoración del delirio se utilizó el método para la evaluación de la confusión (Confusion Assessment Method, CAM) en pacientes no intubados y el CAM‐UCI para los pacientes intubados.
Resultados
En total, 309 pacientes que recibieron dexmedetomidina y 310 del grupo control se incluyeron en el análisis por intención de tratar. La incidencia de delirio durante los primeros 5 días tras la cirugía fue inferior en presencia de tratamiento con dexmedetomidina que en ausencia del mismo: 5,5% (17/309) versus 10,3% (32/310); riesgo relativo (RR) 0,53, i.c. del 95% 0,30‐0,94, P = 0,026. La incidencia global de complicaciones a los 30 días excluyendo el delirio también fue inferior en presencia que en ausencia de tratamiento con dexmedetomidina (19,4% (60/309) versus 26,1% (81/301), RR 0,74, i.c. del 95% 0,55‐0,99, P = 0,047).
Conclusión
La administración intraoperatoria de dexmedetomidina reduce la presencia de delirio en los pacientes mayores tras cirugía mayor no cardiaca.
In this RCT, intraoperative infusion of dexmedetomidine was found to reduce the rate of postoperative delirium and surgery‐related complications. The shortcomings of previous studies, such as study design and sample size, were amended, providing more robust evidence for clinical practice.

In this study, an attempt was made to develop porous polymeric nano-fibrous scaffold using a biodegradable poly(
l-lactic acid) (PLLA) for in vitro culture of nerve stem cells (NSCs). The processing of PLLA scaffold has been carried out by liquid–liquid phase separation method. The physico-chemical properties of the scaffold were fully characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. These results confirmed that the prepared scaffold is highly porous and fibrous with diameters down to nanometer scale. As our nano-structured PLLA scaffold mimics natural extracellular matrix, we have intended this biodegradable scaffold as cell carrier in NTE. The in vitro performance of NSCs seeded on nano-fibrous scaffold is addressed in this study. The cell cultural tests showed that the NSCs could differentiate on the nano-structured scaffold and the scaffold acted as a positive cue to support neurite outgrowth. These results suggested that the nano-structured porous PLLA scaffold is a potential cell carrier in NTE.
Silver (Ag)-doped diamond-like carbon (Ag-DLC) films were deposited on Si wafer and Co-Cr-Mo alloy substrates using a hybrid deposition technique that combined high-power pulsed magnetron sputtering ...(HPPMS) and high-power pulsed plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (HPP-PECVD). The Ag concentration (0.0–10.0 at.%) in Ag-DLC films was controlled by adjusting the number of Ag rods in the mosaic silver-graphite target. The effects of Ag doping on the microstructure, chemical bonding, mechanical properties, and adhesion stability of DLC films were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that Ag doping could refine the columnar structure in DLC films and change the shape and size of DLC surface hillocks. The residual stress in the DLC films decreased as the Ag concentration increased, which effectively improved the adhesion between the films and substrates. The fraction of sp3 bonds in the carbon structure decreased with increasing Ag concentration, which resulted in a reduction in the film hardness when the Ag concentration was higher than 3.2 at.%. Ag doping could improve the wear performance of DLC films, and the Ag-DLC film with 3.2 at.% Ag had excellent wear resistance. Compared with pure DLC films, the Ag-DLC films had better adhesion stability in physiological solutions, which is beneficial for the long-term service of DLC films in vivo applications.

The interplanetary (IP) shock with the sudden increase of solar wind dynamic pressure can cause the acceleration and transportation of energetic electrons in the inner magnetosphere. In this study, ...we further examine the influence of the sudden drop of solar wind dynamic pressure on magnetospheric energetic particles, through case study of energetic electron drift echoes and statistics with 25 cases from 2012 to 2017. We found that there were both dropout and enhancement drift echoes of electrons in some dynamic pressure decrease events, while other events only show electron dropout drift echoes. In addition, we analyzed the electron phase space density (PSD) and found that the radial profile of electron PSD were different for the two types of events, suggesting that the electron PSD plays an important role in the variations of energy electron fluxes induced by the dynamics pressure decrease. The results of this study, combined with previous studies of energetic electron dynamics caused by IP shocks, can provide a more general picture of both solar wind dynamic pressure decrease and increase effects on the energetic electrons.
