The objective of the present study was to detect the genetic diversity of Anaplasma marginale strains in naturally infected calves from a rural property located in the northeastern region of the ...state of Pará, Eastern Amazon, which has a history of mortality due to anaplasmosis. Fourteen calves positive for A. marginale were selected using a semi-nested polymerase chain reaction for the target msp1α gene, with asymptomatic (n=3) and symptomatic (n=11) infections. After sequencing the samples, two genotypes were verified in the E and C regions and the structures in tandem repeats were determined. Nine different strains were found: eight related to the E genotype (α-β-β-Γ = one animal, asymptomatic; 16-F-17-F-F = two animals, symptomatic; α-β-F-F-F-F = one animal, asymptomatic; 31-62-62-61 = one animal, symptomatic; τ-10-3 = three animals, two symptomatic and one asymptomatic; α-β-β-β = one animal, symptomatic; τ-22 -13-18 = two animals, both symptomatic; β-β-β-BRA1-31 = two animals, both symptomatic), and one related to genotype C (23-24-25-31-27-27 = one animal, asymptomatic). Genotype E was predominant in 92.86% of the samples (13/14), followed by genotype C (7.14%). This study made it possible to detect the genetic diversity of A. marginale in calves from the selected dairy farm, in addition to identifying the BRA1 sequence in the animals of the present study, which was recently diagnosed in Minas Gerais, demonstrating the dispersion of A. marginale strains in herds from different Brazilian states. Genetic diversity of A. marginale was observed in both symptomatic and asymptomatic calves. There were no significant differences when clinical signs were compared to the genotype verified in the infected animals. The prevalence of pathogenicity was not observed.

Abstract: Spirochetosis avian is a septicemic disease of acute course and cosmopolitan can affect various avian species, caused by Borrelia anserina and transmitted by Argas miniatus. The experiment aimed to evaluate the biochemical, anatomical and histopathological changes in the liver of Gallus gallus caused by experimental infection with B. anserina. A total of 40 fowls of the species G. gallus were divided into four randomized groups of ten fowls each: G1 - inoculated with serum infected with B. anserina; G2 - inoculated with 0.9% saline; G3 - exposed to nymphs of 3rd instar of A. miniatus infected with B. anserina; G4 - exposed to ticks nymphs of 3rd instar of A. miniatus free of B. anserina. The fowls of Groups 1 and 3 expressed at 3 and 6 days post-inoculation (DAI) respectively , symptoms characteristic of the disease as lack of appetite , weight loss , drowsiness, greenish diarrhea, pale mucous membranes , ruffled feathers and hyperthermia. ALT of group 1 levels were significantly higher only at the 12º and 24º day after inoculation (DAI) compared with its control group (group 2), and in group 3 these levels remained high until the 20º DAI as compared with its control group (group 4). AST enzyme fluctuated little in the experimental groups, although elevations at 12ºDAI has been found in group 1 and 3. The liver of fowls in groups 1 and 3, presented at necropsy moderate hepatomegaly, congestion, irregular surface and red color to cyanotic. If found even small whitish spots on the surface. The histopathology revealed congestion, mononuclear inflammatory infiltrates, fibrinoid necrotic foci, dilatation of sinusoids, and vacuolation of hepatocytes. The Warthin-Starry staining revealed in the liver of fowls in groups 1 and 3 the presence of spirochetes compatible with B. anserina, often within blood vessels.
This dataset summarizes the research on the impacts of Invasive Alien Species (IAS) documented in Brazil from 1981 to 2022 and was used to subsidize the Brazilian Platform on Biodiversity and ...Ecosystem Services. Impacts of non‐native plants and animals, but not microorganisms and fungi, on terrestrial and aquatic (freshwater and marine) environments were included in this review. Most of the literature reviewed consisted of published articles, plus a few book chapters, dissertations, theses, and reports. We found 1003 records of ecological and economic impacts (970 negative and 33 positive) caused by 239 different species, as well as effects on people's well‐being. Understanding and assessing all ecological interactions of IAS in nature, as well as evaluating their contributions to humans, can be a complex task. However, the current scientific evidence from Brazil suggests that negative impacts of IAS are far more common than positive impacts, highlighting the importance of avoiding novel introductions. From a conservationist perspective, the simple presence of IAS may cause the negative impact of changing the original structure and processes of nature. This is of special concern in megadiverse countries like Brazil, where interactions among species are multiple and complex. Therefore, we believe this extensive review is an important contribution to the national knowledge of IAS and the improvement of global databases, which must be periodically reviewed. The complete dataset for this published in the Data Article section of the journal is available in electronic format in MetaCat in JaLTER at http://db.cger.nies.go.jp/JaLTER/metacat/metacat/ERDP-2024-01.1/jalter-en.

Sustained virologic response (SVR) in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) treatment denotes that the host genetics controls the immune response and unequivocally contribute to viral clearance or disease ...severity. In this context, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the locus of interferon lambda 3 and 4 genes (
) have been important genetic markers of responsiveness to CHC as prognostic markers for the pegylated-Interferon-alpha/ribavirin (Peg-IFN-α/RBV). Here, we analyzed 12 SNPs at the
region in 740 treatment-naïve patients with CHC infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes 1, 2, or 3 treated with Peg-IFN-α/RBV. Individually, rs12979860-CC, rs8109886-CC, or rs8099917-TT were predictive markers of SVR, while rs12979860-CC demonstrated the stronger effect. Besides, the genotypic combination of these three predictors' genotypes, CC/CC/TT, increased the rate of SVR. Serum levels of cytokines and gene expression analysis on the genes
,
,
, and some of the IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) were measured in a subgroup of 24 treated patients and 24 healthy volunteers. An antagonist effect was highlighted between the expression of
and
mRNA among patients. Besides, a prominent production of the pro-inflammatory chemokines CCL4 and CXCL10 was observed at a 12-week treatment follow-up. Lower serum levels of these chemokines were detected in patients with an rs12979860-CC genotype associated with the better treatment outcome. Also, lower expression levels of the
,
,
genes were observed among rs12979860-CC individuals. In conclusion, a combination of the genotypes at the
locus can act as a better marker for the prognosis for virological responses in an admixed Brazilian population presenting the modulating effect over innate immunity and inflammation that are controlling the outcome of the viral infection, but also other infectious diseases. This study is registered on the ClinicalTrials.gov platform (accession number NCT01889849 and NCT01623336).
•The use of ACS as SCM was evaluated in paste and self-compacting concrete.•ACS increased the yield stress and viscosity of paste, and the HRWR demand of concrete.•ACS led do similar cement hydration ...kinetics and strength compared to LF.•Blending ACS with LF evened the performance of concrete compared to pure limestone.•ACS did not significantly react up to 91 days.
The manufacturing process of pig iron generates large amounts of slag. The slow cooling of this waste generates the air-cooled blast furnace slag (ACS). Since it is less reactive than granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), ACS finds little use as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) and the existing studies use it only as aggregates in concrete. This work investigated the use of finely ground ACS as SCM for self-compacting concrete (SCC) production. Pastes and SCCs with GBFS, ACS in two grinding levels and limestone filler (LF) were produced, and their fresh state performance, hydration kinetics and compressive strength from 3 to 91 days were evaluated. ACS increased the yield stress and viscosity of the pastes compared with LF, also increasing the SCC’s superplasticizer content required to reach the target slump flow of 650 ± 50 mm. Nonetheless, this increase was from 0.95 up to 1.36 kg/m3 of concrete, and all the mixes presented V-funnel time of 4–6 s and were highly stable in the fresh state (VSI = 0, with no segregation/bleeding). Isothermal calorimetry indicated that ACS slightly shortened the induction period compared with LF, but led to equivalent peak values (6.7–6.9 mW/g cement). Concretes with ACS and LF had similar strengths at all ages, reaching 32 ± 1 MPa at 3 days and 41 ± 2 MPa at 91 days, indicating that no significant reaction was observed for ACS up to the later age. Furthermore, blending ACS with LF in equal proportions resulted in a SCC with fresh performance equivalent to that containing only LF, in addition to increasing the strength by about 5% at all ages. In general, ACS had comparable performance to that of LF and can be used as SCM in SCC.
The animal cancer burden is essential for the translational value of companion animals in comparative oncology. The present work aims to describe, analyze, and compare frequencies and associations of ...tumors in dogs and cats based on the Animal Cancer Registry created by Vet-OncoNet. With 9079 registries, regarding 2019 and 2020, 81% (
= 7355) belonged to dogs. In comparison, cats have a general one-year right advance in the mean age of cancer diagnosis compared to dogs. The multivariate topography group analysis shows a distinct pattern between the two species: dogs have higher odds of cancer in the genito-urinary system, spleen, soft tissue tumors and skin, while cats show higher odds for tumors in the eyes, digestive organs, nasal cavity, lymph nodes, bones and mammary glands. Regarding morphologies, dogs are overrepresented in mast cell tumors (MCT), melanomas, and hemangiosarcomas. While cats are overrepresented in fibrosarcomas, lymphomas (T and B-cell), in malignant mammary tumors, and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Females have greater odds only in the mammary gland, with males having greater odds in six of twelve topographies. This study is the first outcome of continuous animal cancer registration studies in Portugal.
Background
Lupus nephritis (LN) is a frequent manifestation of childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) with a potential risk for kidney failure and poor outcomes. This study aimed to ...evaluate stages III, IV, and V of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and investigate risk factors for CKD in cSLE patients.
Methods
We performed a nationwide observational cohort study in 27 pediatric rheumatology centers, including medical charts of 1528 cSLE patients. Data were collected at cSLE diagnosis, during follow-up, and at last visit or death, between September 2016 and May 2019.
Results
Of 1077 patients with LN, 59 (5.4%) presented with CKD, 36/59 (61%) needed dialysis, and 7/59 (11.8%) were submitted for kidney transplantation. After Bonferroni’s correction for multiple comparisons (
p <
0.0013), determinants associated with CKD were higher age at last visit, urinary biomarker abnormalities, neuropsychiatric involvement, higher scores of disease activity at last visit and damage index, and more frequent use of methylprednisolone, cyclosporine, cyclophosphamide, and rituximab. In the regression model analysis, arterial hypertension (HR = 15.42, 95% CI = 6.12–38.83,
p
≤ 0.001) and biopsy-proven proliferative nephritis (HR = 2.83, 95%CI = 1.70–4.72,
p
≤ 0.001) increased the risk of CKD, while children using antimalarials had 71.0% lower CKD risk ((1.00–0.29) × 100%) than children not using them. The Kaplan–Meier comparison showed lower survival in cSLE patients with biopsy-proven proliferative nephritis (
p
= 0.02) and CKD (
p
≤ 0.001).
Conclusions
A small number of patients manifested CKD; however, frequencies of dialysis and kidney transplantation were relevant. This study reveals that patients with cSLE with hypertension, proliferative nephritis, and absence of use of antimalarials exhibited higher hazard rates of progression to CKD.

Objectives
To identify associations between mortality in cSLE patients and their characteristics: clinical and laboratory features, disease activity and damage scores, and treatment; to evaluate risk ...factors associated with mortality in cSLE; and to determine the most frequent causes of death in this group of patients.
Methods
We performed a multicenter retrospective cohort using data from 1,528 cSLE patients followed in 27 pediatric rheumatology tertiary centers in Brazil. Patients’ medical records were reviewed according to a standardized protocol, in which information regarding demographic and clinical features, disease activity and damage scores, and treatment were collected and compared between deceased cSLE patients and survivors. Univariate and multivariate analyses by Cox regression model were used to calculate risk factors for mortality, whereas survival rates were analyzed by Kaplan–Meier plots.
Results
A total of 63/1,528 (4.1%) patients deceased, 53/63 were female (84.1%), median age at death was 11.9 (9.4–13.1) years and median time interval between cSLE diagnosis and death was 3.2 (0.5–5.3) years. Sepsis was the main cause of death in 27/63 (42.8%) patients, followed by opportunistic infections in 7/63 (11.1%), and alveolar hemorrhage in 6/63 (9.5%) patients. The regression models resulted in neuropsychiatric lupus (NP-SLE) (HR = 2.56, 95% CI = 1.48–4.42) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) (HR = 4.33, 95% CI = 2.33–4.72), as risk factors significantly associated with mortality. Overall patient survival after cSLE diagnosis at 5, 10, and 15 years were 97%, 95.4%, and 93.8%, respectively.
Conclusions
This study confirmed that the recent mortality rate in cSLE in Brazil is low, but still of concern. NP-SLE and CKD were the main risk factors for mortality, indicating that the magnitude of these manifestations was significantly high.
