Instruments for distributed fiber-optic measurement of ...temperature are now available with temperature resolution of 0.01°C and spatial resolution of 1 m with temporal resolution of fractions of a minute along standard fiber-optic cables used for communication with lengths of up to 30,000 m. We discuss the spectrum of fiber-optic tools that may be employed to make these measurements, illuminating the potential and limitations of these methods in hydrologic science. There are trade-offs between precision in temperature, temporal resolution, and spatial resolution, following the square root of the number of measurements made; thus brief, short measurements are less precise than measurements taken over longer spans in time and space. Five illustrative applications demonstrate configurations where the distributed temperature sensing (DTS) approach could be used: (1) lake bottom temperatures using existing communication cables, (2) temperature profile with depth in a 1400 m deep decommissioned mine shaft, (3) air-snow interface temperature profile above a snow-covered glacier, (4) air-water interfacial temperature in a lake, and (5) temperature distribution along a first-order stream. In examples 3 and 4 it is shown that by winding the fiber around a cylinder, vertical spatial resolution of millimeters can be achieved. These tools may be of exceptional utility in observing a broad range of hydrologic processes, including evaporation, infiltration, limnology, and the local and overall energy budget spanning scales from 0.003 to 30,000 m. This range of scales corresponds well with many of the areas of greatest opportunity for discovery in hydrologic science.

Nous décrivons une nouvelle approche ...chirurgicale permettant l'apport efficace de vecteurs adénoviraux, incompétents pour la replication, dans l'espace sous-rétinien de rats nouveau-nés. Nos données suggèrent que cette méthode permet d'infecter de façon reproductible de larges zones d'épithélium pigmentaire de rats nouveau-nés normaux et pourra être appliquée au transfert de gènes d'intérêt thérapeutique chez des rats RCS nouveau-nés. Nous démontrons également la possibilité d'infecter ex vivo des cultures d'épithélium pigmentaire à l'aide d'adénovirus RSV-β-galactosidase.
A successful surgical access to the subretinal space is critical for achieving adenovirus-mediated gene transfer to the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells or photoreceptor cells. We report a novel surgical approach allowing an efficient delivery of recombinant replication-deficient adenoviral vectors into the subretinal space of newborn rats. Our data suggest that this method may be useful for infecting reproducibly large areas of the RPE cell layer of normal newborn rats and should be applicable to RCS pups. We also show the feasibility of infecting ex vivo RPE cells in culture using the same recombinant adenoviral vector.

A new system for wireless monitoring of pulse oximetry (SpO2) was developed on the basis of a Nonin OEM III oximetry module and a radiofrequency transceiver. The electronic unit and the power supply ...was integrated into a specially designed infant shoe named BBA bootee. Clinical evaluation of the system revealed a good agreement between the pulse oximetry data transmitted by the BBA bootee and those recorded simultaneously by a reference monitor. The comparative data collected in 39 babies yielded a mean (bias SD) value of (−1.1 1.9)% for SpO2 and (−2 8) beats per minute for heart rate. Use of an integrated accelerometer/actimeter to reduce the motion artifact is addressed as well as ergonomics of the sensor-supporting garment.

A cet égard, la musicologie classique et ...historique a toujours attribué une importance prépondérante à la biographie des grands compositeurs et à leur place dans le développement de l'art musical occidental. Plus portée sur l'observation de la musique en tant que fait social et culturel, l'ethnomusicologie s'attache généralement davantage à la fonction du musicien qu'à sa personnalité. Et pourtant, le récit d'une vie peut se révéler porteur de nombreuses informations sur son contexte, sur le rôle de la musique ou sur le sens et les caractéristiques des pratiques qui en découlent. Grands artistes, interprètes talentueux ou simples acteurs d'événements musicaux collectifs, les protagonistes de ces « histoires de vies », réelles ou imaginaires, devraient nous inviter à découvrir quelques-uns des secrets dont est faite l'identité musicale des peuples.
