Stool specimens of patients with diarrhea or other gastrointestinal alterations who were admitted to Xeral-Calde Hospital (Lugo, Spain) were analyzed for the prevalence of typical and atypical ...enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC). Atypical EPEC strains (eae+ bfp-) were detected in 105 (5.2%) of 2015 patients, whereas typical EPEC strains (eae+ bfp+) were identified in only five (0.2%) patients. Atypical EPEC strains were (after Salmonella) the second most frequently recovered enteropathogenic bacteria. In this study, 110 EPEC strains were characterized. The strains belonged to 43 O serogroups and 69 O:H serotypes, including 44 new serotypes not previously reported among human EPEC. However, 29% were of one of three serogroups (O26, O51, and O145) and 33% belonged to eight serotypes (O10:H-, O26:H11, O26:H-, O51:H49, O123:H19, O128:H2, O145:H28, and O145:H-). Only 14 (13%) could be assigned to classical EPEC serotypes. Fifteen intimin types, namely, alpha1 (6 strains), alpha2 (4 strains), beta1 (34 strains), xiR/b2 (6 strains), gamma1 (13 strains), gamma2/q (16 strains), delta/k (5 strains), epsilon1 (9 strains), nuR/e2 (5 strains), zeta (6 strains), iota1 (1 strain), muR/iota2 (1 strain), nuB (1 strain), xiB (1 strain), and o (2 strains), were detected among the 110 EPEC strains, but none of the strains was positive for intimin types mu1, mu2, lambda, or muB. In addition, in atypical EPEC strains of serotypes O10:H-, O84:H-, and O129:H-, two new intimin genes (eae-nuB and eae-o) were identified. These genes showed less than 95% nucleotide sequence identity with existing intimin types. Phylogenetic analysis revealed six groups of closely related intimin genes: (i) alpha1, alpha2, zeta, nuB, and o; (ii) iota1 and muR/iota2; (iii) beta1, xiR/beta2B, delta/beta2O, and kappa; (iv) epsilon1, xiB, eta1,eta2, and nuR/epsilon2; (v) gamma1, muB, gamma2, and theta; and (vi) lambda. These results indicate that atypical EPEC strains belonging to large number of serotypes and with different intimin types might be frequently isolated from human clinical stool samples in Spain.

Los autores de este trabajo -utilizando como referencia teórica el modelo tipológico de hermandades propuesto por l. Moreno para el área andaluza- abordan la plausible validación de dicho modelo en ...una población rural de la Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, mostrando el aparato formal y la expresión ritual de las diferentes hermandades en estudio. Los mecanismos de integración, así como la articulación de una estructura social segmentaria, quedan plasmados a través de un pormenorizado análisis de los niveles diferenciales de identificación social con la comunidad. Más claramente: si las hermandades grupales operan como aglutinantes sectoriales de la comunidad -con sus particulares mecanismos de identidad-, la hermandad patronal diluye las identidades y pertenencias a grupos sociales en la reafirmación de la identidad ·colectiva, a través del culto a la Virgen de la Soledad.

Objectives Having shown that the Xeral-Calde Hospital in Lugo (Spain) has been concerned by Escherichia coli clone O25:H4-ST131 producing CTX-M-15 (Nicolas-Chanoine et al. J Antimicrob Chemother ...2008; 61: 273–81), the present study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of this clone among the extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli isolates and also to molecularly characterize the E. coli isolates producing ESBL other than CTX-M-15. Methods In the first part of this study, 105 ESBL-producing E. coli isolates (February 2006 to March 2007) were characterized with regard to ESBL enzymes, serotypes, virulence genes, phylogenetic groups, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and PFGE. In the second part of this study, 249 ESBL-producing E. coli isolates (April 2007 to May 2008) were investigated only for the detection of clone O25b:H4-ST131 producing CTX-M-15 using a triplex PCR developed in this study and based on the detection of the new operon afa FM955459 and the targets rfbO25b and 3′ end of the blaCTX-M-15 gene. Results Of the 105 ESBL-producing E. coli isolates, 60 (57.1%) were positive for CTX-M-14, 23 (21.9%) for CTX-M-15, 10 (9.5%) for SHV-12 and 7 (6.7%) for CTX-M-32. Serotypes, virulence genes, phylogenetic groups and molecular typing by PFGE demonstrated high homogeneity within those producing CTX-M-15 and high diversity within E. coli producing CTX-M-14 and other ESBLs. By PFGE, CTX-M-15-producing E. coli isolates O25b:H4 belonging to the phylogenetic group B2 and MLST profile ST131 were grouped in the same cluster. The epidemic strain of clone O25b:H4-ST131 represented 23.1%, 22.5% and 20.0% of all ESBL-producing E. coli isolated in 2006, 2007 and 2008, respectively. Conclusions CTX-M-type ESBLs, primarily CTX-M-14 and CTX-M-15, have emerged as the predominant types of ESBL produced by E. coli isolates in Lugo. In view of the reported findings, long-term care facilities for elderly people may represent a significant reservoir for E. coli clone O25b:H4-ST131 producing CTX-M-15. The triplex PCR developed in this work will be useful for rapid and simple detection of this clone.

In this paper, we focus on some aspects of testimonial texts and essays of Primo Levi (1919-1987), which estimates as unavoidable regarding the aforementioned issues. These texts are: Se questo è un uomo (1947), La tregua (1963) and I sommersi e i salvati (1986).
