In view of the increase in yeast infections, especially polymicrobial ones, differential culture media have acquired increasing importance. The present study evaluated the Sabouraud chloramphenicol, ...Biggy agar, Pagano Levin agar and CHROMagar Candida media in terms of isolation, number of yeast colony forming units per plate, and inhibition of bacteria and filamentous fungi. To this end, we used 223 biological samples, including feces, and oral, vaginal and anal mucosae from 86 patients presenting or not symptoms of fungal infections. The four media did not differ significantly in terms of detection of yeast-positive cultures. The number of colony forming units per plate ranged from zero to 2.380, with a predominance of counts of 1 to 9 colonies per plate. No significant differences were observed among the four culture media in terms of number of colonies counted, for each kind of biological material. Fifteen species belonging to the genera Candida, Saccharomyces, Cryptococcus, Trichosporon and Rhodotorula were isolated, with C. albicans being the predominant species, followed by C. parapsilosis and R. rubra. CHROMagar Candida and Biggy agar were complementary in the isolation of the different species and favored a greater recovery of polymicrobial cultures. Pagano Levin agar isolated the smallest variety of species. Sabouraud chloramphenicol agar was the least effective in terms of bacterial inhibition and favored a greater development of filamentous fungi. The results suggest that more than one culture medium should be used for an adequate primary isolation.

Due to considerable morbidity and mortality rates, radiation‐induced hemorrhagic cystitis is an important complication of pelvic irradiation. The available conservative treatment techniques show limited results. Hyperbaric oxygen has shown to be effective in the treatment of radiation‐induced lesions, including radiation cystitis. Our aim was to analyze the effectiveness and safety of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for refractory radiation‐induced hemorrhagic cystitis.
Clinical records of 176 patients with refractory radiation‐induced hemorrhagic cystitis treated at our centre were retrospectively analyzed. The evolution of macroscopic hematuria was the main therapeutic outcome analyzed.
23,9% of patients showed other radiation‐induced soft tissue lesions. After an average of 37 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen, 89,8% of patients showed resolution of hematuria. Adverse events were reported in 1,7% of patients.
Hyperbaric oxygen was a safe and effective therapy for radiation‐induced hemorrhagic cystitis. Concomitant radiation‐induced soft tissue lesions were relatively frequent, which makes hyperbaric oxygen an excellent choice as first line treatment in those patients.
Na
+-dependent uridine transport into liver plasma membrane vesicles from partially hepatectomized and sham-operated rats was studied. Preparations purified 6 h after 70% hepatectomy exhibited an ...increased
V
max of uridine uptake (3.7 vs. 1.4 pmol/mg prot/3 s) without any change in
Km (6μM). Incubation of the vesicles in the presence of monensin decreased uridine uptake although the differences between both experimental groups remained identical. It is concluded that uridine transport is induced early after partial hepatectomy by a mechanism which does not involve changes in the transmembrane Na
+ gradient. This is the first evidence in favor of modulation of nucleoside transport into liver cells.
The genetic heterogeneity and transcription activity of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) LTR region and
tat gene have been examined. Comparison involved the relevant genomic regions of ...viruses isolated from twenty long-term survivors and from ten typical progressors. No significant differences were observed in mutation frequencies among the two groups, although there was a significant higher proportion of synonymous substitutions in the
tat gene of viruses from typical progressors. Four LTR sequences showed an insertion of 20–31 residues at the junction between the LTR Nef-coding and the LTR noncoding region. Neither these insertions nor other genetic changes found in these sequences affected the LTR transcription function, as measured in transient expression assays using transfection of both established cell lines and peripheral blood lymphocytes with plasmid DNA. The results did not allow the association of structural or functional alterations in LTR or
tat with a degree of disease progression. The results reinforce the concepts of complexity of HIV-1 evolution in infected individuals, and the multifactorial nature of progression to AIDS.
System A activity for neutral amino acid transport, measured as the MeAIB-sensitive Na
+-dependent
l-alanine uptake, is induced 6 h after partial hepatectomy in plasma membrane vesicles from rat ...livers. Other Na
+-dependent transporters, like system ASC (MeAIB-insensitive Na
+-dependent
l-alanine transport) and the nucleoside carrier show similar inductions. Up-regulation of system A is not explained by changes in the dissipation rate of the Na
+ transmembrane gradient, as deduced from uptake measurements performed in the presence of monensin. To determine whether induced system A shared any similarity with the activity found in hepatoma cell lines, we analyzed the
N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) sensitivity of system A in both regenerating and control rat liver plasma membrane vesicles. NEM treatment was equally effective in inhibiting system A in both experimental groups. Thus, during the prereplicative phase of liver growth, a transport activity similar to basal system A is up-regulated in liver parenchymal cells, by a stable mechanism that does not involve changes in the Na
+ transmembrane gradient.
