Introduction
Lifelong learning encompasses four pillars: (1) learning to know; (2) learning to do; (3) learning to be; and (4) learning to live together. These four pillars, which are expanded upon ...within the current study provide a lens to examine relationships between professional development, use of technology for remote online teaching, and pedagogical efficacy in the age of COVID-19.
Methods
The study examined survey responses from 372 primary school subjects representing six different districts, and interviews with 16 teachers. The responses were analyzed using correlation and MANOVA statistical tests.
Results
Teachers’ professional development processes were found to have a positive impact on the teachers’ pedagogical efficacy, by means of positive perceptions toward the use of technology for remote online teaching. Learning foci predicted the use of technology, and the use of technology predicted learning assessment measurements.
Discussion
The study’s findings reinforce the need for professional development processes based on systematic identification of pedagogical needs that arise in the field, their analysis and the understanding of the added value of pedagogical tools that can support enhanced implementation of teaching - learning - evaluation. The study’s findings point to epistemological elements related to the types of acquired knowledge and to learning methods, which make it possible to differentiate between various processes in teachers’ professional development as well as processes in the use of innovative pedagogical technology.
Text messages with strategically placed emoticons impact recipient perceptions regarding truth or deception of the content. This article describes an experiment using 3 treatments applied randomly to ...4 deceptive and 4 truthful message snippets. The original content of the snippets related to scholarship interviewee comments that truthfully or deceptively described their background. Each message was represented in one of three ways: plain text, annotated text, or text with embedded emoticons. The data were analyzed using a 2 (Text Veracity: Honest or Dishonest) x 3 (Cues: Plain Text vs Annotated Text vs Emoticons) design. The dependent variable reflected participant perception of the snippet's honesty or dishonesty. Results show extra emotional cues impacted perceptions of the message content. Overall, this study demonstrated annotated text and text with embedded emotion were more likely to be judged as deceptive than plain text. This was particularly true when messages were deceptive. True messages were detected as truthful more often in plain text.
This article moves beyond analysis methods related to a traditional relational database or network analysis and offers a novel graph network technique to yield insights from a hospital’s emergency ...department work model. The modeled data were saved in a Neo4j graphing database as a time-varying graph (TVG), and related metrics, including degree centrality and shortest paths, were calculated and used to obtain time-related insights from the overall system. This study demonstrated the value of using a TVG method to model patient flows during emergency department stays. It illustrated dynamic relationships among hospital and consulting units that could not be shown with traditional analyses. The TVG approach augments traditional network analysis with temporal-related outcomes including time-related patient flows, temporal congestion points details, and periodic resource constraints. The TVG approach is crucial in health analytics to understand both general factors and unique influences that define relationships between time-influenced events. The resulting insights are useful to administrators for making decisions related to resource allocation and offer promise for understanding impacts of physicians and nurses engaged in specific patient emergency department experiences. We also analyzed customer ratings and reviews to better understand overall patient satisfaction during their journey through the emergency department.
Women diagnosed with HPV face a hard-to-understand disease that may impact their psychological and physical health and may pose challenges communicating with healthcare providers in sensitive ...settings. We posit patient empowerment through targeted educational materials can improve sensitive communication and lead to better health outcomes. This study measured the impact of a patient-empowerment process used in a gynecology clinic for HPV patients to improve sensitive communication during medical-related meetings and on subsequent patient empowerment outcomes. The empowerment process was based on expert-vetted informative material made accessible in the physician’s waiting room on tablet devices. Communication between physicians and patients was measured during medical visits via a direct observation, encoding process. Empowerment items were tested following medical visits. The results were compared to a control group that received non-medical, lifestyle material. 237 female, gynecology patients from a large, private clinic participated. Using expert-vetted, relevant material to enhance patient education in a clinical setting results in higher levels of patient empowerment. Physician interaction impacts patient empowerment as do various communication behaviors and this can lead to positive health outcomes. This article focuses on the psychometric stability of the end-user computing satisfaction (EUCS) instrument by Doll and Torkzadeh when applied to Taiwanese end-users of typical business software ...applications. Using a survey of 342 users, this research provides evidence that the instrument is a valid and reliable measure in Taiwanese applications. Given this evidence, managers and software product developers can confidently apply the instrument in the investigation of competing tools, features, and technologies in Taiwan.
Can language usage help determine which model approach is best suited to provide decision makers with desired insights? This research addresses that question through an investigation of Linguistic ...Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), which calculates the presence of >80 language dimensions in text samples, and permits construction of custom dictionaries. This article demonstrates use of LIWC to ensure better problem/model fit within the context of selecting a decision support tool. We selected two simulation tools as research instruments to investigate a broader question on the usefulness of LIWC to guide choice of DSS tool. The tools selected were System Dynamics (SD) and Discrete Event Simulation (DES). First, we tested LIWC to analyze practitioners' language use when developing models. LIWC pointed out significant linguistic differences consistent with prior theoretical work, based on model development approach in a number of dimensions. These differences provided a basis for developing a custom dictionary for use on the second part of our study. The second part of the study focused on language used by decision makers in problem statements and used the linguistic clues identified in the first part of the study to ensure problem/model fit. Results indicated problem statements contained linguistic clues related to the type of information desired by problem solvers. The article concludes with a discussion about how LIWC and similar tools can help determine which DSS tools are suited to particular applications.

Mobile technology offers educators new potential for course and learning material construction. Empirical best practices research is scarce, particularly in secondary and higher education settings. ...This article provides a field experiment using a 2 (individual vs. group) x 2 (text vs. video) design in a secondary school context with students engaged in learning activities related to either text or video content on mobile devices. We structured material to benefit either individual or collaborative learning practices and examined gender as a critical factor to understand ways to improve teaching approaches. The study used an ANOVA with repeated measures to understand impacts of various attributes on outcomes such as material experience duration, perceived peer influenced learning, satisfaction, perceived understanding, and performance. This study provides empirical evidence in a mobile learning environment that suggests female students engaged in group learning modes, supported with video material, had different engagement patterns than male students. Females spent more time in the application consistent with earlier research suggesting females are more likely to use strategies such as active listening, asking questions, and soliciting input. In addition, female students engaged in group learning mode, supported with video material, had higher peer-influenced learning scores than male students. Holistically, this evidence supports the view that females use learning strategies that benefit from group learning and features provided by mobile technologies. The results help direct future research regarding design and implementation of learning in secondary school settings and may help remove gender disparities.

In many curricula and degree programs, simulation courses are not required, but these tools and techniques could be beneficial to students preparing for a variety of careers. The current paper ...describes two examples of simulation education embedded into broader course topics from a development perspective. The examples, from courses generally described in this paper as Cloud Computing and Big Data, offer a recommended approach for exposing students to practical uses of simulation. In the first example, we use simulation techniques to develop a web service emulation response database within a cloud computing environment for software testing. In the second example, simulation techniques provide an approach to generate data sets for learning data analytics techniques.

Two seismic forces beyond our control the advent of Web 2.0 and the inexorable influx of tech-savvy Millennials on campus are shaping what Roger McHaney calls The New Digital Shoreline of ...higher education. Failure to chart its contours, and adapt, poses a major threat to higher education as we know it.These forces demand that we as educators reconsider the learning theories, pedagogies, and practices on which we have depended, and modify our interactions with students and peersall without sacrificing good teaching, or lowering standards, to improve student outcomes. Achieving these goals requires understanding how the indigenous population of this new shoreline is different. These students arent necessarily smarter or technologically superior, but they do have different expectations. Their approaches to learning are shaped by social networking and other forms of convenient, computer-enabled and mobile communication devices; by instant access to an over-abundance of information; by technologies that have conferred the ability to personalize and customize their world to a degree never seen before; and by time-shifting and time-slicing.As well as understanding students assumptions and expectations, we have no option but to familiarize ourselves with the characteristics and applications of Web 2.0essentially a new mind set about how to use Internet technologies around the concepts of social computing, social media, content sharing, filtering, and user experience.Roger McHaney not only deftly analyzes how Web 2.0 is shaping the attitudes and motivations of todays students, but guides us through the topography of existing and emerging digital media, environments, applications, platforms and devices not least the impact of e-readers and tablets on the future of the textbook and the potential they have for disrupting teacher-student relationships; and, if appropriately used, for engaging students in their learning.This book argues for nothing less than a reinvention of higher education to meet these new realities. Just adding technology to our teaching practices will not suffice. McHaney calls for a complete rethinking of our practice of teaching to meet the needs of this emerging world and envisioning ourselves as connected, co-learners with our students.
