La démence sémantique est un syndrome d’atrophie lobaire, lié à une dégénérescence des régions temporales antérieures, et se traduisant par une atteinte largement prédominante de la mémoire sémantique. Si le diagnostic est relativement facile à établir dans les formes typiques et si le patient est vu précocement, l’apparition possible de troubles cognitifs annexes et de troubles psycho-comportementaux peut faire errer le diagnostic en faveur d’un syndrome de démence fronto-temporale voire de maladie d’Alzheimer probable.
A new avalanche detector concept is presented that promises very high (close to 100%) quantum efficiency. Integrating the structure into the centre of a drift diode one obtains a large area device ...that focuses the photoelectron onto a small “point-like” avalanche region. Such a device can be used as building block for a “silicon photomultiplier”. Implementing the structure into the output node of a pnCCD a pixel detector sensitive to single optical photons can be constructed.

L’article présente les réflexions du docteur Ross Tsuyuki, l’un des chercheurs canadiens de pointe sur le sujet, et quelques découvertes réalisées tout au long de son partenariat avec Merck au Canada depuis 20 ans. La majeure partie des études révisées par des pairs du docteur Tsuyuki sont menées en Alberta, où la portée de la pratique des pharmaciens est élargie.

A longitudinal population study of 1462 women, aged 38-60 years, was carried out in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1968-69. In univariate analysis anthropometric variables indicating centrally localized ...adipose tissue (waist circumference, the ratio of waist to hip circumference and the subscapular skinfold) showed significant age-standardized positive associations with the occurrence (prevalence + incidence data) of endometrial carcinoma. Incidence data suggested that measurements of centrally localized adipose tissue might be of predictive value for this malignancy as well as for ovarian carcinoma. In contrast, measurements of generalized obesity (body weight or body mass index) or peripherally localized adipose tissue (triceps skinfold) showed no associations to these malignancies. No relationship was observed between the anthropometric variables studied and breast carcinoma. The association observed between endometrial and ovarian carcinomas with central adipose tissue did, however, not remain in multivariate analysis when generalized obesity was taken into account. Centrally localized adipose tissue is known to be associated with endocrine abberations including irregular ovulation and menstruation, re-emphasizing the importance of endocrine factors for the pathogenesis of endometrial and ovarian carcinomas. No positive association was found between development of the carcinomas and initial measurements of blood glucose, serum lipids or blood pressure, found to be elevated in cross-sectional studies. An increase in these variables therefore probably are parallel phenomena rather than predictors. The women with endometrial or breast carcinomas smoked more than the remaining women. Although the number of end-points observed was limited these results suggest that measurements of adipose tissue distribution might be a valuable addition to the predictors of endometrial and ovarian carcinomas.
A longitudinal study of altogether 1462 women aged 38 to 60 years started in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1968-69. Based on information from the population study and from the Swedish Cancer Registry 35 ...women had a history of malignant-disease when initially examined in 1968-69. During a 12-year follow-up period a total of 79 malignant tumours developed in 73 women. A comparison was made between the 1988 Cancer Registry listing and the observations made in the population study. All but one out of 103 cases (99%) were registered in the Cancer Registry and all but one (99%) in the population study. It may be concluded that the accuracy of the population study registration as well as that of the Cancer Registry at that time were very high. This enables us to draw relatively safe conclusions from our own material when testing for risk factors.

A new concept for a silicon single photon counter has been developed at the Semiconductor Laboratory of the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics. The concept combines the principles of a drift diode and ...an avalanche diode. The electron which is generated by an incoming photon has to drift to the small avalanche region and avalanche breakdown will take place. The detector is operated in Geiger mode. In order to provide high efficiency and good timing properties, the electrons have to be focussed properly with short time jitter. Therefore, drift and timing properties have been investigated using simulations.
The active galactic nucleus PG 1553+113 was observed by the MAGIC telescope in July 2006 during a multiwavelength campaign, in which telescopes in the optical, X-ray, and very high energies ...participated. Although the MAGIC data were affected by strong atmospheric absorption (calima), they were analyzed after applying a correction. In 8.5 h, a signal was detected with a significance of 5.0σ. The integral flux above 150 GeV was $(2.6\pm0.9)\times 10^{-7}~{\rm ph\,s^{-1}\,m^{-2}}$. By fitting the differential energy spectrum with a power law, a spectral index of $-4.1\pm0.3$ was obtained.
