I examine the decades of fraught Iran-U.S. relations through a conceptual feminist IR lens, and I situate the relationship within the broader MENA region beset with rivalries, conflicts and crises. ...The spotlight is on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the unilateral U.S. withdrawal in 2018, the long sanctions regime imposed on Iran, and the gendered effects on women's welfare and security. I argue that Iran-U.S. mutual hostility has enhanced tensions in the Middle East, reinforced militarised masculinities and bolstered the patriarchal political forces in Iran - which became the target of the 2022 female-led protests. Building on feminist arguments about the connection between domestic and international affairs, the article elucidates the relationship of sanctions to 'the continuum of violence'.
Abstract
Applying Walby’s model of gender regime, with some modifications, to the Middle East and North Africa, I highlight the importance of the family as an institutional domain, replace the ideal ...types of social-democratic and neoliberal public gender regimes with neopatriarchal and conservative-corporatist, and elucidate feminist organizing and mobilizing as a key driver in the transition from one public gender regime to another in Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. The article contributes to theory-building on (varieties of) gender regimes by underscoring (sub)regional specificities across the capitalist world-system’s economic zones and emphasizing the role of feminist activism.

This contribution draws on world-system, Marxist, and feminist theories to argue that globalization is a stage in the evolution of the capitalist world-system, with distinct geographic, class, and ...gender features. Although there is some merit in redefining 'globalization' to enable its extension back to ancient history, this contribution situates 'globalization-from-above' and 'globalization-from-below' in a particular stage of world capitalist development, highlights female labour in social reproduction, and ends by speculating as to whether aspects of this stage may be on the decline.
Scholars have long established that institutions, both formal and informal, are gendered. But how does institutional change come about, and what prevents it? This article focuses on the debate in ...Tunisia around equal inheritance for women. Tunisia's 1956 family law had emancipatory features, but equal inheritance for daughters was not among them, and the issue came to be advocated by feminist groups. The Committee on Individual Liberties and Equality (COLIBE), formed in 2017 by then President Essebsi, produced a report the following year that recommended equal inheritance, among other legal and policy reforms. The Tunisian experience shows how feminist groups seek to realize institutional change by working with (and within) state bureaucracies and political parties, appealing to other elite allies, securing support from legal and technical experts, and aligning 'framing' strategies for wider religio-cultural resonance. However, feminist goals may be undermined by an untoward political economy and low popular support, as occurred in Tunisia. Sources of data and information include detailed press accounts and relevant secondary sources, a close reading of the COLIBE report, Facebook discussions, Tunisian feminist publications, a June 2019 seminar on the COLIBE process by one of its members, and public opinion data.
We examine prospects for the shift from an authoritarian corporatist social policy regime to a democratic and developmental one, in light of popular socio-economic and political grievances and ...demands. Social policy can bring about a sense of inclusion, belonging, and rights on the part of beneficiaries, and is necessary for a well-functioning and dynamic economy. Democratic and developmental political systems in the region will largely depend on the social policy regime that emerges from social dialogs among different interest groups. References to recent debates in Tunisia suggest both prospects and challenges.
Informed by sociological standpoint, intersectional, and gender regime theories, we examine perceptions of a diverse sample of Iranian Kurdish women in the city of Sanandaj about their legal status ...and social positions. We find perceptions of injustice, oppression, male control, and lack of opportunity associated with both the family and broader society. Kurdish women are socially located in structures and institutions of both private and public patriarchy. At the same time, their growing educational attainment and knowledge of possibilities for change enable them not only to articulate grievances but also to aspire to, and sometimes engage in, collective action for women’s rights. By focusing on an under-studied region, this article contributes to the wider literature on Kurdish women, underscores the continued salience of intersectional and standpoint approaches, and expands gender regime theorizing beyond Western cases.
Populist and nationalist movements have long histories and ideologically may appear as left-wing or right-wing. Feminist scholars have explored the gender dynamics of conservative nationalist ...movements or national-identity projects, revealing the social-reproductive burdens placed on women as well as the reasons why such movements resonate with some women, but gendered populism remains largely unexplored outside Europe. Through feminist and world-systems lenses, we put the spotlight on the contemporary wave of right-wing populist-nationalist movements, including Islamist movements, providing country vignettes and a closer look at Turkey to identify links to economic and cultural aspects of neoliberal capitalist globalization and to explore varieties and gender dynamics. Prospects for renewed progressive mobilizations against the wave of right-wing movements are also considered.
