GRB 210731A was a long-duration gamma-ray burst discovered by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) aboard the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory. Swift triggered the wide-field, robotic MeerLICHT optical ...telescope in Sutherland; it began observing the BAT error circle 286 seconds after the Swift trigger and discovered the optical afterglow of GRB 210731A in its first 60-second q-band exposure. Multi-colour observations of the afterglow with MeerLICHT revealed a light curve that showed three peaks of similar brightness within the first four hours. We present the results of our follow-up campaign and interpret our observations in the framework of the synchrotron forward shock model. We performed temporal and spectral fits to determine the spectral regime and external medium density profile, and performed detailed multi-wavelength theoretical modelling of the afterglow following the last optical peak at 0.2 days to determine the intrinsic blast wave parameters. We find a preference for a stellar wind density profile consistent with a massive star origin, while our theoretical modelling results in fairly typical shock microphysics parameters. Based on the energy released in gamma-rays and the kinetic energy in the blast wave, we determine a low radiative efficiency of ~0.02. The first peak in the optical light curve is likely the onset of the afterglow. We find that energy injection into the forward shock offers the simplest explanation for the subsequent light curve evolution, and that the blast wave kinetic energy increasing by a factor of ~1000 from the first peak to the last peak is indicative of substantial energy injection. Our highest-likelihood theoretical model overpredicts the 1.4 GHz flux by a factor of approximately three with respect to our upper limits, possibly implying a population of thermal electrons within the shocked region.
Ongoing all-sky surveys by the the eROSITA and the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescopes on-board the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) mission have already revealed over a million of X-ray sources. One of ...them, SRGA J124404.1-632232/SRGU J124403.8-632231, was detected as a new source in the third (of the planned eight) consecutive X-ray surveys by ART-XC. Based on the properties of the identified optical counterpart it was classified as a candidate X-ray binary (XRB). We report on the follow-up observations of this source with Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory (Swift), and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), which allowed us to unambiguously confirm the initial identification and establish SRGU J124403.8-632231 as a new X-ray pulsar with a spin period of ~538 s and a Be-star companion, making it one of the first Galactic X-ray pulsars discovered by SRG.
We report the results of eROSITA and NICER observations of the June 2020 outburst of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0529.8-6556 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, along with the analysis of archival ...X-ray and optical data from this source. We find two anomalous features in the system's behavior. First, the pulse profile observed by NICER during maximum luminosity is similar to that observed by XMM-Newton in 2000, despite the fact that the X-ray luminosity was different by two orders of magnitude. By contrast, a modest decrease in luminosity in the 2020 observations generated a significant change in pulse profile. Second, we find that the historical optical outbursts are not strictly periodic, as would be expected if the outbursts were triggered by periastron passage, as is generally assumed. The optical peaks are also not coincident with the X-ray outbursts. We suggest that this behavior may result from a misalignment of the Be star disk and the orbital plane, which might cause changes in the timing of the passage of the neutron star through the disk as it precesses. We conclude that the orbital period of the source remains unclear.
We report on the discovery of Swift J004516.6-734703, a Be/X-ray binary system by the Swift SMC Survey, S-CUBED. Swift J004516.6-734703, or SXP 146.6, was found to be exhibiting a bright (~10^37 ...erg/s) X-ray outburst in 2020 June 18. The historical UV and IR light-curves from OGLE and Swift/UVOT showed that after a long period of steady brightness, it experienced a significant brightening beginning around 2019 March. This IR/UV rise is likely the signature of the formation of a circumstellar disc, confirmed by the presence of strong a H{\alpha} line in SALT spectroscopy, that was not previously present. Periodicity analysis of the OGLE data reveals a plausible 426 day binary period, and in the X-ray a pulsation period of 146.6s period is detected. The onset of X-ray emission from Swift J004516.6-734703 is likely the signature of a Type-I outburst from the first periastron passage of the neutron star companion through the newly formed circumstellar disc. We note that the formation of the circumstellar disc began at the predicted time of the previous periastron passage, suggesting its formation was spurred by tidal interaction with the neutron star.
We report on results of spectropolarimetry of the afterglow of the long gamma-ray burst GRB 191221B, obtained with SALT/RSS and VLT/FORS2, as well as photometry from two telescopes in the MASTER ...Global Robotic Network, at the MASTER-SAAO (South Africa) and MASTER-OAFA (Argentina) stations. Prompt optical emission was detected by MASTER-SAAO 38 s after the alert, which dimmed from a magnitude (white-light) of ~10 to 16.2 mag over a period of ~10 ks, followed by a plateau phase lasting ~10 ks and then a decline to ~18 mag after 80 ks. The light curve shows complex structure, with four or five distinct breaks in the power-law decline rate. SALT/RSS linear spectropolarimetry of the afterglow began ~2.9 h after the burst, during the early part of the plateau phase of the light curve. Absorption lines seen at ~6010 Å and 5490 Å are identified with the Mg II 2799 Å line from the host galaxy at z=1.15 and an intervening system located at z=0.96. The mean linear polarisation measured over 3400-8000 Å was ~1.5% and the mean equatorial position angle theta ~65 degrees. VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetry was obtained ~10 h post-burst, during a period of slow decline (alpha = -0.44), and the polarisation was measured to be p = 1.2% and theta = 60 degrees. Two observations with the MeerKAT radio telescope, taken 30 and 444 days after the GRB trigger, detected radio emission from the host galaxy only. We interpret the light curve and polarisation of this long GRB in terms of a slow-cooling forward-shock.

Graphical abstract Abstract Infertility affects millions of couples worldwide. Oxidative stress (OS) causes peroxidation of lipids and damage to spermatozoa, thus, reducing the quality of seminal ...parameters. In addition, the differences in the levels of antioxidants and reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused by intrinsic and extrinsic variables linked to lifestyle, diet, genetics, and OS also contribute to male infertility. High levels of ROS result in sperm damage of sperm parameters due to lipid peroxidation and oxidation of proteins. Other significant causes of ROS include changes in sex hormone levels, sperm DNA damage, including mutations, and immature spermatozoa. Treating the root causes of OS, by changing one’s lifestyle, as well as antioxidant therapy, may be helpful strategies to fight OS-related infertility. However, the determination of male infertility induced by OS is currently a challenge in the field of reproductive health research. This review intends to describe the role of oxidative stress on male infertility and the current understanding of its management. Lay The inability to conceive affects many couples globally. Oxidative stress refers to imbalances between different oxygen species which can lead to male fertility problems by damaging sperm and semen. Oxidative stress may be caused by several factors, including diets high in fats, sugars and processed foods, lifestyle (including smoking, alcohol consumption and having a sedentary lifestyle), and genetics. Treatment that focuses on the root cause may help combat male infertility. However, there is currently no consensus on the best way to treat male fertility problems, particularly those associated with oxidative stress. This paper describes the role of oxidative stress on male infertility and discusses the current techniques employed in treating male fertility issues.
Botswana is often presented as an example of good governance in both political and economic terms and its post-colonial economic performance is regarded as nothing short of a miracle. This article gives a different insight into the little known other side of Botswana, explodes its myth of exceptionality and points to the necessity to rethink attitudes toward this much praised and prized African country. We report on the discovery of Swift J010902.6-723710, a rare eclipsing Be/X-ray Binary system by the Swift SMC Survey (S-CUBED). Swift J010902.6-723710 was discovered via weekly S-CUBED monitoring ...observations when it was observed to enter a state of X-ray outburst on 10 October 2023. X-ray emission was found to be modulated by a 182s period. Optical spectroscopy is used to confirm the presence of a highly-inclined circumstellar disk surrounding a B0-0.5Ve optical companion. Historical UV and IR photometry are then used to identify strong eclipse-like features re-occurring in both light curves with a 60.623 day period, which is adopted as the orbital period of the system. Eclipsing behavior is found to be the result of a large accretion disk surrounding the neutron star. Eclipses are produced when the disk passes in front of the OBe companion, blocking light from both the stellar surface and circumstellar disk. This is only the third Be/X-ray Binary to have confirmed eclipses. We note that this rare behavior provides an important opportunity to constrain the physical parameters of a Be/X-ray Binary with greater accuracy than is possible in non-eclipsing systems.
SMC X-2 exhibits X-ray outburst behaviour that makes it one of the most luminous X-ray sources in the Small Magellanic Cloud. In the last decade it has undergone two such massive outbursts - in 2015 ...and 2022. The first outburst is well reported in the literature, but the 2022 event has yet to be fully described and discussed. That is the goal of this paper. In particular, the post-peak characteristics of the two events are compared. This reveals clear similarities in decay profiles, believed to be related to different accretion mechanisms occurring at different times as the outbursts evolve. The H{\alpha} emission line indicates that the Be disc undergoes complex structural variability, with evidence of warping as a result of its interaction with the neutron star. The detailed observations reported here will be important for modelling such interactions in this kind of binary systems.
4U 1210-64 is a peculiar X-ray binary that was first discovered in 1978 by the Uhuru satellite. The analysis of the X-ray data revealed a 6.7-day orbital period and an additional long-term modulation ...that is manifested as low and high flux states. Based on the previous classification of the donor star from the analysis of its optical spectra, the system has been suggested to be a high-mass X-ray binary. We re-visit the optical classification where, based on the spectra from the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), we conclude that the donor star is of spectral class A8 III-IV, making it a member of the rare intermediate-mass X-ray binaries. We perform radial velocity analysis using the SALT spectra where we consider circular and eccentric orbits. From the mass function derived and the mass constraints of the donor star, we demonstrate that a neutron star is favoured as the compact object in the binary system. We show, for the first time, the folded optical lightcurves, whose shape is interpreted to be due to a combination of ellipsoidal variations, irradiation of the donor star, and mutual eclipses of the star and accretion disk.
