In academia, funding for conference attendance is limited, and both students and early-career researchers are therefore only able to attend a limited number of conferences. This means that, ...typically, researchers need to choose between attending multiple local and, at times, more affordable conferences, or one or two large, expensive, international conferences. Local and less expensive conferences may be research-specific but will have a smaller audience and lower networking potential. In biological anthropology and bioarchaeology, the majority of these larger annual conferences are held in North America and Western Europe where travel and accommodation costs can be very high for those outside of these regions. These costs, in addition to visa restrictions, reduce the diversity of participants at academic conferences, skewing attendance to students and researchers from the host countries. Not only does this disadvantage individuals outside of the typical host-countries, but it also limits the breadth of academic dialogue, with inclusion in academic conferences determined all too often by financial resources rather than academic value. This paper discusses the demographics and lack of diversity at some of these large conferences and the factors that are known to limit international conference travel. It then presents the benefits of digital presentation methods using Digital Dilemma 2018 as a case study for how digital presentation methods can be combined with physical presentations at minimal cost and time. We hope that this will encourage more conferences to offer a digital presentation option in the future.

Fire represents one of the most powerful forces in the archaeological record, and what is left after a trial by fire can be used to understand the process of transformation. Though few archaeologists ...focus their research on fire and its presence in the archaeological record directly, it is a thread that runs through multiple archaeological subfields and further academic interest has been devoted to the evidence it leaves in its wake. The Trial by Fire conference was developed to address the theme of fire in archaeological research and beyond and to offer a place to discuss future collaboration between subdisciplines joined by the omnipresence of fire. The conference was organized by IoA PhD candidates Lisa Monetti and Kate Gafner and generously funded by UCL's Institute of Advanced Studies Octagon Small Grants Fund, the Institute of Archaeo-Metallurgical Studies, the Institute of Archaeology, and Oxbow Books.
Understanding the taphonomic process of burning allows forensic practitioners to better interpret remains and reconstruct the burning incident in a medicolegal investigation. This can yield critical ...information, especially when other details, such as the biological profile, are obscured by fire. A forensic case involving human remains recovered within a Greek Orthodox cemetery that exhibited a distinctive pattern of differential burning is reported. The bones exhibited a range of differential burning in a pattern inconsistent with the anatomical position of the remains during heat exposure. No macroscopic signs of skeletal trauma or evidence of dismemberment were present on the remains. The pre-burning condition of the bones was inferred based on the presence of the differential burning and its localization identified through analysis of a suite of macroscopic heat-induced traits, as well as consideration of the forensic context. The anthropologists concluded that the bones were skeletonized prior to burning and that the remains were once interred or stored in an ossuary and were likely burned in a ritualistic manner, given the artifacts present and the conspicuous location of the burn area. This case highlights the practical experience required of forensic practitioners encountering burned remains and the necessity of understanding fire as a taphonomic agent that can be analyzed to determine pre-burning condition and the scenario of the burning event in a medicolegal investigation. Furthermore, this case underscores the achievability of pre-burning condition determination using macroscopic traits alone, even when there is a paucity of skeletal elements in the inventory. Due to knowledge of the funerary customs of modern-day Greece, the practitioners were able to interpret the origin of the remains, thereby this paper provides insight into a geographically specific forensic context.

Cremated human remains are encountered in the archaeological record across contexts as well as in modern funerary and forensic settings. Despite this, cremated human remains and cremation funerals ...have not been explored within the literature to the same extent as inhumed bone. This is partly due to the difficulties associated with the estimation of the biological profile of burned remains because heat-induced changes obscure features traditionally associated with such methods. This thesis presents a method of analysis of cremated human remains which focuses on the identification of subtle differential burning towards the inference of practices connected to the cremation funeral. Morphology and fracture patterns of 6240 fragments of burned bone representing 79 individuals from nine Romano-British sites have been analysed to identify patterns in burn scenario between individuals, cemetery sites, and geographic regions. These data have been framed within an understanding of the process of human decomposition and the timeline of preparations of cremation funerals to consider the materiality of the body's impact on the funerary process. The results indicate regional variation in cremation funerary practice. In particular, it is suggested that the cremation funerals around Canterbury were more uniform, perhaps due to prescribed practices and the participation of professional funerary workers. Individuals from this region also exhibited specific fracture patterns across the body, perhaps connected to funerary preparations and position on the pyre. The assemblage from smaller, rural cemetery contexts northwest of London highlight a significantly greater variation in funerary practice. The suite of variables used to measure differential burning across the body and between sites also suggests that the observable differences are related to the burning process rather than post-depositional changes. This method is repeatable, accessible, and applicable to other contexts both in the archaeological record and forensic settings.

Fire represents a continuous and relentless force in the archaeological record. It has been harnessed to destroy and transform, yet it can also act as a force on its own, bringing disaster or a new ground on which to build. What remains after a burning event can be used to understand not only the agency of those in the past, but also processes of transformation, insights into material properties, and so on. The 2019 Trial by Fire conference at UCL Institute of Archaeology addressed fire’s visibility in the archaeological record, fire’s interaction with artifacts, fire as a participant, and as an artifact in its own right. This introduction to our resultant Special Issue presents a series of papers which address these themes and highlights the value of considering fire when attempting to learn more about the lives of past individuals through scientific analysis.

In October 2018 a one-day conference was held at the UCL Institute of Archaeology focussing on the 'Digital Dilemma' in biological archaeology -specifically human remains research where the use of ...digitisation methods have increased exponentially over the last decade while comparatively little discussion of the ethical and legal considerations of these data has taken place. Papers presented at Digital Dilemma 2018 explored the use of digital data in human remains research, discussing both the benefits provided by these data, areas of ethical or methodological concern and suggestions for future research. This paper and the following conference proceedings will discuss this research demonstrating the importance that this Digital Dilemma in archaeology continues to be discussed and considered in future research.
La ricerca è stata condotta da luglio 1997 a settembre 1999 in un?area del Parco Regionale della Maremma (Grosseto) per A) individuare le caratteristiche dei siti di tana e degli ingressi ...maggiormente utilizzati dagli istrici; B) rilevare il rapporto spazio- temporale esistente tra gli individui e le loro tane. Ventisette animali, 14 maschi e 13 femmine, sono stati catturati, muniti di radio-collare e localizzati periodicamente (min. 2 notti/settimana con 1 fix/2h per notte). È stata individuata mensilmente la tana di ciascun animale con radio-collare, mediante homing in . Ogni tana è stata georiferita e sono stati effettuati una serie di rilevamenti morfologici, vegetazionali e orografici del sito, oltre che la registrazione del numero di animali marcati in essa presenti. In totale, sono state individuate 31 tane differenti su 81 homing in condotti. Sono state calcolate e analizzate le distanze di ciascun animale dalla propria tana in otto fasce orarie di circa 3 ore ciascuna. Le analisi sono state svolte a livello annuale (settembre 1998 - agosto 1999), semestrale e trimestrale, verificando statisticamente le differenze tra le fasce orarie, e tra maschi e femmine. H. cristata sembra aver preferito i siti di tana coperti da vegetazione e su terreni acclivi, con pochi cambi di tana (tendenzialmente ogni tana viene mantenuta per almeno 2 mesi). Sembra inoltre che un sito di tana venga condiviso solo dal nucleo familiare (coppia con i piccoli dell?anno). L?attività spaziale degli istrici rispetto alla posizione delle loro tane ha presentato un ritmo bifasico, maggiore nelle ore centrali della notte e ridotta al sorgere del sole. Gli istrici sembrano modificare il proprio comportamento con le ore di buio disponibili, utilizzando anche le ore di luce quando le notti sono più brevi. Infatti, mentre gli spostamenti notturni sono presenti nel corso di tutto l?anno, quelli diurni risultano quasi assenti e concentrati nei pressi della tana nel semestre freddo, aumentando invece nel periodo estivo. Anche l?attività spaziale notturna presenta differenze tra i due semestri: nel periodo caldo gli spostamenti risultano maggiori rispetto a quello freddo, probabilmente a causa della presenza di campi coltivati nella parte settentrionale dell?area di studio. Tra maschi e femmine sono state rilevate differenze significative solo nella fascia centrale della notte (semestre caldo), con un maggior allontanamento della femmina dalla tana. All?interno di ciascuna tana sono sempre stati presenti gli stessi individui, presumibilmente coppie stabili, con un?attività spaziale sincrona a conferma della monogamia di questa specie.
Ormai in auge dagli anni ?70, la tecnica di indagine maggiormente utilizzata in studi di ecologia animale è la radio-localizzazione a distanza. Tale tecnica di rilevamento prevede l?applicazione di ...radio-trasmittenti che emettono onde elettromagnetiche e la loro successiva localizzazione per mezzo di un sistema direzionale di ricezione del segnale. Molto si è scritto sui problemi associati agli errori di localizzazione e alle tecniche per ridurne o almeno determinarne l?entità. L?esigenza principale in questo tipo di studio è infatti l?ottenimento di dati contenenti il minimo errore possibile. L?orografia, le tipologie vegetazionali, ecc. rivestono una certa importanza nella determinazione dell?errore in quanto possono produrre assorbimento e riflessione delle onde elettromagnetiche e quindi influire sulla ?visibilità? di una sorgente di onde radio rispetto ad un sistema di rilevamento. La determinazione del bacino visuale di una porzione di territorio rispetto a uno o più punti di osservazione deve tener conto inoltre di aspetti stocastici come la presenza di costruzioni umane non mappate e di vegetazione, l'altezza dell?osservatore e di tutte le entità casuali che si originano da un?imperfetta conoscenza di qualsiasi ambiente naturale. Tale aspetto viene contemplato dalla logica FUZZY che sta alla base del software FVA ( Fuzzy Visibility Analyser ) da noi sviluppato, che prende in considerazione il problema della modellazione della variabilità del territorio e dell?incertezza dei dati, producendo una mappa graduata per cui un punto è visibile (oppure no) con un certo grado di certezza, da almeno due stazioni di rilevamento. La scala adottata va da 0 ad 1: 0 indica massima incertezza, o minima certezza; 1 minima incertezza, o massima certezza; con una scala di valori intermedi che la logica fuzzy è in grado di contemplare e gestire. Affrontando in questo modo il problema della visibilità, è possibile individuare, con un certo grado di incertezza, aree per le quali il segnale radio rischia di essere deviato da elementi orografici o di altra natura. Tale tecnica è stata applicata in due casi di studio: uno studio di ecologia comportamentale sull?istrice nel Parco Naturale della Maremma e il progetto di reintroduzione del cervo nel Parco Nazionale del Pollino. Tramite questo applicativo, è stato possibile generare mappe fuzzy di visibilità per entrambe le aree di studio e determinare eventuali aree non triangolabili da almeno due stazioni definite sul campo secondo criteri di accettabilità del rilevamento (angolo di intersezione, distanza massima, etc.). Le mappe fuzzy sono state ottenute da un insieme di punti quotati e di stazioni di rilevamento, e da una PAM ( Pseudo Altitude Map ) e una UM ( Uncertainty Map ) generate da FVA. Una volta settati i parametri che incidono sul rilevamento e quindi sulla visibilità, è stata ottenuta una mappa di visibilità per le migliori coppie di punti d?osservazione per ogni porzione in cui l?area di studio è stata suddivisa. L?applicativo FVA ha permesso di ottenere mappe informative e realistiche con il valore di visibilità dalla migliore coppia di punti di osservazione, rivelandosi un pratico strumento integrativo per la predisposizione e la validazione di una campagna di rilevamento telemetrico sul territorio.
L'istrice, il più grande roditore della fauna italiana, ha colonizzato negli ultimi 30 anni gran parte del territorio italiano, ma ancora scarse sono le conoscenze scientifiche su questa specie. ...L'istrice, un erbivoro generalista capace di colonizzare habitat molto diversi, mostra una marcata flessibilità nell´uso dello spazio: lo home range può variare da poco più di 10 ha a oltre 700 ha e i siti di alimentazione visitati possono essere localizzati a oltre 4 km dalla tana. Lo studio dell'uso dello habitat di questa specie in ambienti diversi è pertanto un problema scientifico particolarmente interessante. Tra gennaio 1994 e giugno 1995 sono stati monitorati tramite telemetria 6 individui adulti in un'area prevalentemente rurale alla periferia di Siena, mentre tra agosto 1998 e settembre 2001 sono stati monitorati 10 individui adulti nel Parco Regionale della Maremma, un'area costiera mediterranea. L'uso dello habitat è stato studiato al secondo e al terzo livello di selezione, cioè composizione in habitat degli home range e selezione dello habitat all'interno degli home range . Bosco, macchia, prati e pascoli predominavano negli home range individuali, al contrario di coltivi, zone edificate, zone umide e zone dunali. All'interno degli home range in entrambe le aree di studio, nonostante marcate variazioni individuali nell'uso e selezione dello habitat, i coltivi sono stati sotto-utilizzati, mentre boschi, macchia, prati e pascoli sono stati selezionati positivamente o usati secondo la loro disponibilità. Inoltre, la pineta e la zona di spiaggia e duna, presenti solo nel Parco della Maremma, sono stati selezionati negativamente mentre siepi e fossi, presenti solo a Siena, sono stati selezionati positivamente. Questi risultati costituiscono una base di partenza per la gestione di questa specie.
The SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) facility, currently under development at Legnaro National Laboratories of INFN, aims at the production of intense RIB (Radioactive Ion Beams) ...employing the Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) technique for interdisciplinary research. The radioactive isotopes of interest are produced by the interaction of a multi-foil uranium carbide target with a 40 MeV 200 μA proton beam generated by a cyclotron proton driver. The Target Ion Source (TIS) is the core of the SPES project, here the radioactive nuclei, mainly neutron-rich isotopes, are stopped, extracted, ionized, separated, accelerated and delivered to specific experimental areas. Due to efficiency reasons, the TIS unit needs to be replaced periodically during operation. In this highly radioactive environment, the employment of autonomous systems allows the manipulation, transport, and storage of the TIS unit without the need for human intervention. A dedicated remote handling infrastructure is therefore under development to fulfill the functional and safety requirement of the project. This contribution describes the layout of the SPES target area, where all the remote handling systems operate to grant the smooth operation of the facility avoiding personnel exposure to a high dose rate or contamination issues.
