From its emergence in the middle of the 19th century, mountaineering has always been a very masculine activity, which is practised by men and which conveys manly representations. The study of the ...very few autobiographies written by female mountaineers tells us something about gender relations in French and British mountaineering. First of all, the scarcity of these narratives (compared to narratives written by men) is evidence of the symbolical place of women in mountaineering. Then, theses texts bring to light the atypical trajectories and social dispositions (each time replaced within the social and historical context of the life of the author) of these women. Finally, they show how female mountaineers consider male mountaineers of their time – men are omnipresent in female narratives, whereas women are almost absent in men’s ones – and reveal implicitly their inferior status. In this study, historical and social context, although not central, is important: each time, it is in relation to the social and sport norms of a time period that one can appraise the place of female mountaineers.

Mountaineering is a valuable field of study for carrying out a sociology of excellence. A socially elitist activity since its inception, mountaineering was initially codified by a small social and ...masculine elite in the United Kingdom as a form of excellence that combined three forms of distinction: sporting, social, and sexual. Focusing on the third dimension of this distinction raises important questions about the relationship between women and excellence in mountaineering since its institutionalization in the middle of the nineteenth century, primarily in the United Kingdom and secondarily in France. Because it was codified, thought out, and told mainly by men, excellence in mountaineering has always been understood, conceived, and perceived as male. Faced with a model of excellence that leaves little room for them, high-level women climbers, still a minority today, have developed over time various responses to find their place in this essentially male - and sometimes hostile - environment.
Since the beginning of mountaineering, mountaineers have produced a vast literary canon. Amongst these texts, autobiographies hold a special place: although they are much more common in ...mountaineering than perhaps in any other sport, they appeared much later than the first mountaineering accounts of ascents and expeditions, which have been available at least since the 1840s. This article addresses two questions. First, why have mountaineers written so many autobiographies, but only since the 1920s? And second, is this material relevant if we want to carry out a valid sociological analysis of mountaineering, and more particularly of excellence in mountaineering? The article shows that autobiographies present relevant, even ideal material for a sociological study of excellence in mountaineering. Indeed, they are characterized by a discourse of excellence produced by an elite (both sporting and, to a certain extent, social elite), a discourse that can tell us a lot about the so-called spirit of mountaineering.
Pourquoi les grands alpinistes se détournent-ils de l’Everest ? Pourquoi refusent-ils l’oxygène artificiel sur certains sommets himalayens ? Pourquoi risquent-ils leur vie pour une ascension nouvelle ...? Mais aussi, pourquoi sont-ils en majorité des hommes, qui plus est, des hommes longtemps issus des élites sociales ? Théâtre de drames, pourvoyeur de héros, objet de polémiques, l’alpinisme de haut niveau fascine. Dans les discours qui l’entourent ressurgissent les mêmes images : celles d’une pratique grande et noble, qu’on ne saurait assimiler à un simple sport, dont les protagonistes dévoués corps et âme, sont prêts à se sacrifier pour une ascension inédite. À condition, cependant, qu’elle soit réalisée dans le bon esprit, car dans le grand alpinisme, il faut parvenir au sommet sans tricher, dans le respect d’une éthique stricte. C’est cet esprit de l’alpinisme, synonyme d’excellence, que l’ouvrage interroge à travers une enquête originale, à la fois historique et sociologique. Mettant à profit des matériaux inédits, il emmène le lecteur des origines de l’alpinisme dans la grande bourgeoisie anglaise du XIXe siècle, jusqu’au début du XXIe siècle. L’esprit de l’alpinisme, principe éthique et esprit de corps, s’inscrit dans des hiérarchies et des rapports de domination de classe et de genre, qui distinguent les élites des masses, les alpinistes des guides, les hommes des femmes. L’ouvrage dévoile comment, par-delà la diffusion, la démocratisation et la féminisation de l’alpinisme, son esprit, codifié il y a plus de cent cinquante ans par une petite élite masculine britannique, continue d’en refléter aujourd’hui les idéologies, au Royaume-Uni mais aussi en France. Ouvrage destiné à un large public, il intéressera, au-delà des universitaires et des amateurs d’alpinisme, toutes celles et ceux qui s’interrogent sur la manière dont des hiérarchies sociales et genrées se construisent et se maintiennent.
In 2018, the French law on the modernisation of the healthcare system (loi de modernisation du système de santé) created the Advanced Practice Nurse (IPA : Infirmier en pratique avancée), a new ...segment between doctors and nurses. This article looks at the way in which some nurses, in socially differentiated ways, on the one hand choose to go back to university for two years in order to get the IPA master degree, and on the other hand appropriate this new diploma in their everyday work. It shows that while, objectively, getting the IPA degree corresponds to "in situ", "horizontal" or "discrete" mobility, subjectively it can be understood quite differently by some nurses : as a "vertical mobility »"and as the start of a new profession.
En 2018, la loi de modernisation du système de santé crée le diplôme d’infirmier en pratique avancée (IPA), nouveau segment professionnel, entre les médecins et les infirmiers diplômés d’État (IDE). Cet article s’intéresse à la manière dont les infirmiers en exercice, de façon socialement différenciée, d’une part, choisissent de reprendre des études contraignantes pour obtenir ce diplôme ; d’autre part, s’approprient ce nouveau diplôme dans leur manière de vivre la pratique infirmière. Il montre notamment que si, objectivement, l’obtention du diplôme IPA s’apparente à une mobilité « sur place », « horizontale » ou « discrète », subjectivement, elle peut être appréhendée tout autrement par certains : comme une véritable « mobilité verticale » et comme l’entrée dans un nouveau métier.
