This substantive-methodological synergy applies evolving approaches to factor analysis to substantively important developmental issues of how five-factor-approach (FFA) personality measures vary with ...gender, age, and their interaction. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) conducted at the item level often do not support a priori FFA structures, due in part to the overly restrictive assumptions of CFA models. Here we demonstrate that exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM), an integration of CFA and exploratory factor analysis, overcomes these problems with the 15-item Big Five Inventory administered as part of the nationally representative British Household Panel Study (N = 14,021; age: 15-99 years, Mage = 47.1). ESEM fitted the data substantially better and resulted in much more differentiated (less correlated) factors than did CFA. Methodologically, we extended ESEM (introducing ESEM-within-CFA models and a hybrid of multiple groups and multiple indicators multiple causes models), evaluating full measurement invariance and latent mean differences over age, gender, and their interaction. Substantively the results showed that women had higher latent scores for all Big Five factors except for Openness and that these gender differences were consistent over the entire life span. Substantial nonlinear age effects led to the rejection of the plaster hypothesis and the maturity principle but did support a newly proposed la dolce vita effect in old age. In later years, individuals become happier (more agreeable and less neurotic), more self-content and self-centered (less extroverted and open), more laid back and satisfied with what they have (less conscientious, open, outgoing and extroverted), and less preoccupied with productivity.

Using ESEM, we addressed substantively important questions with broad applicability to personality research that could not be appropriately addressed with the traditional approaches of either EFA or CFA.
This study illustrates an overarching psychometric approach of broad relevance to investigations of 2 sources of construct-relevant psychometric multidimensionality present in many complex ...multidimensional instruments routinely used in psychological and educational research. These 2 sources of construct-relevant psychometric multidimensionality are related to (a) the fallible nature of indicators as perfect indicators of a single construct, and (b) the hierarchical nature of the constructs being assessed. The first source is identified by comparing confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) and exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) solutions. The second source is identified by comparing first-order, hierarchical, and bifactor measurement models. To provide an applied illustration of the substantive relevance of this framework, we first apply these models to a sample of German children (N = 1,957) who completed the Self-Description Questionnaire (SDQ-I). Then, in a second study using a simulated data set, we provide a more pedagogical illustration of the proposed framework and the broad range of possible applications of bifactor ESEM models.
The Passion Scale, based on the dualistic model of passion, measures 2 distinct types of passion: Harmonious and obsessive passions are predictive of adaptive and less adaptive outcomes, ...respectively. In a substantive-methodological synergy, we evaluate the construct validity (factor structure, reliability, convergent and discriminant validity) of Passion Scale responses (N = 3,571). The exploratory structural equation model fit to the data was substantially better than the confirmatory factor analysis solution, and resulted in better differentiated (less correlated) factors. Results from a 13-model taxonomy of measurement invariance supported complete invariance (factor loadings, factor correlations, item uniquenesses, item intercepts, and latent means) over language (French vs. English; the instrument was originally devised in French, then translated into English) and gender. Strong measurement partial invariance over 5 passion activity groups (leisure, sport, social, work, education) indicates that the same set of items is appropriate for assessing passion across a wide variety of activities-a previously untested, implicit assumption that greatly enhances practical utility. Support was found for the convergent and discriminant validity of the harmonious and obsessive passion scales, based on a set of validity correlates: life satisfaction, rumination, conflict, time investment, activity liking and valuation, and perceiving the activity as a passion.
Classroom context and climate are inherently classroom-level (L2) constructs, but applied researchers sometimes-inappropriately-represent them by student-level (L1) responses in single-level models ...rather than more appropriate multilevel models. Here we focus on important conceptual issues (distinctions between climate and contextual variables; use of classroom L2 rather than student-level L1 measures) and more appropriate multilevel models. To illustrate these issues, we consider the effects of two L2 classroom climate variables and one L2 classroom contextual variable on two L1 student-level outcomes for 2261 students in 128 classes. Through this example, we illustrate how to apply evolving doubly latent multilevel models to (a) evaluate the factor structure of L1 and L2 constructs based on multiple indicators of classroom climate and context measures, (b) control measurement error at L1 and L2, (c) control sampling error in the aggregation of L1 responses to form L2 constructs (the average of student-level responses to form classroom-level constructs), and (d) provide guidelines for appropriate analysis of classroom climate as an L2 construct.

In this investigation, we used a classic latent profile analysis (LPA), a person-centered approach, to identify groups of students who had similar profiles for multiple dimensions of academic ...self-concept (ASC) and related these LPA groups to a diverse set of correlates. Consistent with a priori predictions, we identified 5 LPA groups representing a combination of profile level (high vs. low overall ASC) and profile shape (math vs. verbal self-concepts) that complemented results based on a traditional variable-centered approach. Whereas LPA groups were substantially and logically related to the set of 10 correlates, much of the predictive power of individual ASC factors was lost in the formation of groups and the inclusion of the correlates into the LPA distorted the nature of the groups. LPA issues examined include distinctions between quantitative (level) and qualitative (shape) differences in LPA profiles, goodness of fit and the determination of the number of LPA groups, appropriateness of correlates as covariates or auxiliary variables, and alternative approaches to present and interpret the results.

Research on adolescent well-being has shown that students with depression have an increased risk of facing academic failure, yet few studies have looked at the implications of adolescent depression ...in the process of school dropout. This study examined mediation processes linking depression symptoms, self-perceived academic competence, and self-reported achievement in 7th grade to dropping out of school in later adolescence. We followed 493 (228 girls and 265 boys) French-speaking adolescents from low-socioeconomic-status secondary schools in Montreal (Quebec, Canada) for 6 years. Almost 34% of participants dropped out of school during this period. Findings indicated that self-reported depression symptoms in 7th grade increased the risk of dropping out of school in later adolescence. Structural equation modeling revealed that the predictive relationship between depression symptoms and school dropout was mediated by self-perceptions of academic competence. Current findings provide support for self-perceptions of competence as mediational processes in the relationship between adolescent depression symptoms and early school leaving.
This study is a methodological-substantive synergy, demonstrating the power and flexibility of exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) methods that integrate confirmatory and exploratory ...factor analyses (CFA and EFA), as applied to substantively important questions based on multidimentional students' evaluations of university teaching (SETs). For these data, there is a well established ESEM structure but typical CFA models do not fit the data and substantially inflate correlations among the nine SET factors (median rs = .34 for ESEM, .72 for CFA) in a way that undermines discriminant validity and usefulness as diagnostic feedback. A 13-model taxonomy of ESEM measurement invariance is proposed, showing complete invariance (factor loadings, factor correlations, item uniquenesses, item intercepts, latent means) over multiple groups based on the SETs collected in the first and second halves of a 13-year period. Fully latent ESEM growth models that unconfounded measurement error from communality showed almost no linear or quadratic effects over this 13-year period. Latent multiple indicators multiple causes models showed that relations with background variables (workload/difficulty, class size, prior subject interest, expected grades) were small in size and varied systematically for different ESEM SET factors, supporting their discriminant validity and a construct validity interpretation of the relations. A new approach to higher order ESEM was demonstrated, but was not fully appropriate for these data. Based on ESEM methodology, substantively important questions were addressed that could not be appropriately addressed with a traditional CFA approach.

Do infertile women aged <38 years with quantitative evidence of diminished ovarian reserve and/or poor response to stimulation also exhibit poor oocyte quality as measured by ...blastulation rates, aneuploidy rates, and live birth rates?
SUMMARY ANSWER
Young women with evidence of accelerated follicular depletion, either by precycle ovarian reserve testing or postcycle evidence of low oocyte yield, exhibit equivalent blastulation rates, aneuploidy rates and live birth rates per euploid embryo transfer as age-matched controls with normal precycle and postcycle parameters.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY
Previous studies are conflicted as to whether women with evidence of diminished ovarian reserve and/or poor ovarian response are also at increased risk of exhibiting evidence of poor oocyte quality. Most prior studies have failed to adequately control for the confounding effect of female age on typical markers of oocyte quality in poor responders. The rate of follicular depletion occurs at around 38 years on average; thus, evidence of quantitative depletion before this would indicate a premature diminution of ovarian reserve and allow evaluation of whether markers of oocyte quality are tied to quantitative markers.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION
This was a retrospective cohort study at a single center between 2012 and 2016. This time frame was specifically chosen as all embryos were cultured to the blastocyst stage at this center during the study period (no cleavage stage transfers were performed). Two comparisons were made: precycle assessment of ovarian reserve (based on anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) level) and postcycle oocyte yield results. For each comparison, patients in <10th percentile were compared to patients in the interquartile range (IQR) with respect to blastulation rate, aneuploidy rate and live birth rate. A mixed effects model was created to control for female age (in the <38 year old range) and correlation among oocytes from a given cohort.
PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS
For the precycle blastulation analysis, only patients with AMH data available were included (345 patients with AMH in the <10th percentile versus 1758 patients with AMH in the 25th to 75th percentile (IQR)). To compare aneuploidy rates, the subset of these patients who pursued preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) was then analyzed (124 patients in the <10th percentile versus 782 patients in the IQR). For the postcycle blastulation analysis, all patients who proceeded to retrieval (whether or not they also had AMH data available) were included (535 patients with oocyte yield in the <10th percentile versus 2675 patients in the IQR). To compare aneuploidy rates, the subset of these patients who pursued PGT-A was then analyzed (156 patients in the <10th percentile versus 1100 patients in the IQR).
MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE
The adjusted odds of a given fertilized oocyte developing to a blastocyst, being aneuploid or leading to a live birth after euploid transfer were no different if the oocyte was retrieved from a cycle with ovarian reserve parameters or oocyte yield in the <10th percentile compared to an oocyte retrieved in a cycle with those parameters in the 25-75th percentile. An AMH level in the <10th percentile did more commonly result in cycle cancellation prior to retrieval and after retrieval prior to transfer due to global arrest of embryos.
LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION
The timing of retrieval in patients with fewer oocytes may be more optimal given the greater ability to discern the overall maturity of the cohort, thus enhancing performance per retrieved oocyte. Analyses included only first cycles. Subsequent adjustment of protocol due to prior performance may mean that some patients in the <10th percentile for oocyte yield are actually better prognosis patients than their first cycle indicates. Data on whether or not patients were on oral contraceptives at time that AMH level drawn was not available. Other unknown biases are also likely to be present given retrospective nature of the study.
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS
While young women with evidence of quantitative depletion of ovarian reserve have lower live birth rates per stimulation cycle, this not attributable to poor oocyte quality because the blastulation rate per fertilized oocyte and live birth rate per embryo transfer are equivalent to that in women with normal quantitative markers of ovarian reserve. Thus, the pathophysiology mediating a premature quantitative decline in ovarian reserve appears different than that which mediates markers of oocyte quality, such as aneuploidy. Young poor responders may use this information to help guide embryo accumulation strategies when considering their family building plans.
