The investigation and control of jet fuel contamination for private aircrafts has gained attention due to the softer monitoring in comparison to commercial aviation. The possible contamination with ...kerosene solvent (KS) makes this investigation more challenging, since it has physicochemical similarities with jet fuel. To help solve this problem, a chemometric methodology was applied in this research combining multivariate curve resolution with alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) and partial least squares (PLS) models coupled to near- and mid-infrared spectroscopies (MIR/NIR) in order to detect and quantify KS in blends with JET-A1 using 23 samples (5–60% v/v). Additionally, 98 samples were stored for 60 days, and principal component analysis, genetic algorithm, and successive projections algorithm were coupled to linear discriminant analysis (PCA-LDA, GA-LDA, and SPA-LDA) in order to classify the blends according to the bands assigned to oxidation products, such as phenols and carboxylic acids. GA-LDA and SPA-LDA models were accurate and reached 100% sensitivity and specificity. Physicochemical analysis was not able to detect the presence of KS in contaminated jet fuel samples, even in high concentrations. The use of MIR-NIR combined spectra improved the quantification results, thus decreasing the experimental error from 5.22% (using only NIR) to 1.64%. > 0.995). The MCR-ALS model stood out for recovering the spectral profile of kerosene solvent by segregating it from jet fuel spectra. The development of models using chemometric tools contributed to a fast, low-cost, and efficient process for quality control that can be applied in the fuel industry.

Adhesive bonding has become more efficient in the last few decades due to the adhesives developments, granting higher strength and ductility. On the other hand, natural fibre composites have recently ...gained interest due to the low cost and density. It is therefore essential to predict the fracture behavior of joints between these materials, to assess the feasibility of joining or repairing with adhesives. In this work, the tensile fracture toughness (Gnc) of adhesive joints between natural fibre composites is studied, by bonding with a ductile adhesive and co-curing. Conventional methods to obtain Gnc are used for the co-cured specimens, while for the adhesive within the bonded joint, the J-integral is considered. For the J-integral calculation, an optical measurement method is developed for the evaluation of the crack tip opening and adherends rotation at the crack tip during the test, supported by a Matlab sub-routine for the automated extraction of these quantities. As output of this work, an optical method that allows an easier and quicker extraction of the parameters to obtain Gnc than the available methods is proposed (by the J-integral technique), and the fracture behaviour in tension of bonded and co-cured joints in jute-reinforced natural fibre composites is also provided for the subsequent strength prediction. Additionally, for the adhesively-bonded joints, the tensile cohesive law of the adhesive is derived by the direct method.
The dopamine content in cerebral structures has been related to neuronal excitability and several approaches have been used to study this phenomenon during seizure vulnerability period. In the ...present work, we describe the effects of dopamine depletion after the administration of 6-hidroxidopamine (6-OHDA) into the substantia nigra pars compacta of male rats submitted to the pilocarpine model of epilepsy. Susceptibility to pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE), as well as spontaneous and recurrent seizures (SRSs) frequency during the chronic period of the model were determined. Since the hippocampus is one of main structures in the development of this experimental model of epilepsy, the dopamine levels in this region were also determined after drug administration. In the first experiment, 62% (15/24) of 6-OHDA pre-treated rats and 45% (11/24) of those receiving ascorbic acid as control solution progressed to motor limbic seizures evolving to SE, after the administration of pilocarpine. Severeness of seizures during the model´s the acute period, was significantly higher in epileptic experimental rats (56.52%), than in controls (4.16%). In the second experiment, the frequency of seizures in the model's chronic phase did not significantly change between groups. Our data show that dopamine may play an important role on seizure severity in the pilo's model acute period, which seems to be due to dopamine inhibitory action on motor expression of seizure.

Variability in snake venom composition is well-documented and crucial for understanding snake ecology and predicting snakebites. In this study, we characterize the venom composition and biological ...activities of newborn female and male Bothrops moojeni and their mother. Our results reveal significant differences between the venom of newborn females and males, demonstrating a broad and diverse range of proteins. The venoms of newborn females showed higher serine protease effects, increased hemorrhagic activity, and greater lethality compared to the venom of newborn males. However, no differences were observed in phospholipase A2 and coagulant activity. The differences in protein composition and toxic activities between maternal and neonatal venom, as well as between the venoms of newborn females and males, contribute to understanding the diverse outcomes of snakebites. These results underscore the importance of considering sex and ontogeny in understanding venom composition in snakes.
The effect of the adhesive thickness on the bond strength of single-lap adhesive joints is still not perfectly understood. The classical elastic analyses predict that the strength increases with the ...adhesive thickness, whereas experimental results show the opposite. Various theories have been proposed to explain this discrepancy, but more experimental tests are necessary to understand all the variables.
The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of the adhesive thickness on the strength of single-lap joints for different kinds of adhesives. Three different adhesives were selected and tested in bulk. The strain to failure in tension ranged from 1.3% for the most brittle adhesive to 44% for the most ductile adhesive. The adherend selected was a high-strength steel to keep the adherends in the elastic range and simplify the analysis. Three thicknesses were studied for each adhesive: 0.2, 0.5, and 1 mm.
A statistical analysis of the experimental results shows that the lap shear strength increases as the bondline gets thinner and the adhesive gets tougher.
Snakebite envenomations (SBEs) are a neglected medical condition of global importance that mainly affect the tropical and subtropical regions. Clinical manifestations include pain, edema, hemorrhage, ...tissue necrosis, and neurotoxic signs, and may evolve to functional loss of the affected limb, acute renal and/or respiratory failure, and even death. The standard treatment for snake envenomations is antivenom, which is produced from the hyperimmunization of animals with snake toxins. The inhibition of the effects of SBEs using natural or synthetic compounds has been suggested as a complementary treatment particularly before admission to hospital for antivenom treatment, since these alternative molecules are also able to inhibit toxins. Biodiversity-derived molecules, namely those extracted from medicinal plants, are promising sources of toxin inhibitors that can minimize the deleterious consequences of SBEs. In this review, we systematically synthesize the literature on plant metabolites that can be used as toxin-inhibiting agents, as well as present the potential mechanisms of action of molecules derived from natural sources. These findings aim to further our understanding of the potential of natural products and provide new lead compounds as auxiliary therapies for SBEs.
The contamination of jet fuel has gained attention in the past years as a notable factor in aircraft accidents. Identifying the contamination sources is still a challenge, especially when they have a ...similar composition to the fuel, such as kerosene solvent (KS). A novel analytical methodology was developed by combining a set of excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence to area constrained multivariate curve resolution with alternating least-squares (MCR-ALS) and PARAllel FACtor (PARAFAC) analysis, in order to identify KS in blends with JET-A1. For this purpose, a dataset with 50 samples (KS and JET-A1 blends, 2.0–100% v/v) was used to build the multivariate models. Both PARAFAC and MCR-ALS allowed fuel quantification with 4.64% and 3.46% RMSEP, respectively; both models (PARAFAC and MCR-ALS) could quantify KS with high accuracy (RMSEP <5.36%). In addition, MCR-ALS model was able to recover the pure spectral profiles of KS, JET-A1 and interferers. GC-MS data of the samples proved the composition similarities between both petroleum distillates, thus being inefficient for identifying the contamination. These results indicate that the development of multivariate models using EEM was the key for contributing with a new low-cost and accurate method for on-line screening of jet fuel contamination.

The Aloe vera (L.) Burman f. pulp extract (AE), obtained from the inner parts of Aloe vera leaves, is rich in polysaccharides, including glucomannans, acemannans, pectic compounds, cellulose, and ...hemicelluloses; acemannan and glucomannan are considered the two main components responsible for most of the plant’s therapeutical properties. Besides having anti-inflammatory activity, these polysaccharides accelerate wound healing and promote skin regeneration, thus they can be utilized in healing products. The objective of this study was to develop Aloe vera mucilaginous-based hydrogels for topical use in psoriasis treatment. The hydrogels were prepared with 80% w/w of A. vera mucilaginous gel, evaluating two distinct polymers as the gelling agent: 1% carbopol 940 (FC1 and FC2) or 2% hydroxyethylcellulose (FH3 and FH4). FC1, FC2, FH3 and FH4 were evaluated for their organoleptic characteristics, rheological properties, pH and glucomannan content. Polysaccharide fractions (PFs) were extracted from the AE and used as a group of chemical markers and characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). The quantification of these markers in the raw material (AE) and in the hydrogels was carried out using spectrophotometric techniques in the UV-VIS region. The hydrogels-based hydroxyethylcellulose (FH3 and FH4) had glucomannan contents of 6.76 and 4.01 mg/g, respectively. Formulations with carbopol, FC1 and FC2, had glucomannan contents of 8.69 and 9.17 mg/g, respectively, an ideal pH for application on psoriasis, in addition to good spreadability and pseudoplastic and thixotropic behavior. Considering these results, hydrogel FC1 was evaluated for its keratolytic activity in a murine model of hyperkeratinization. For that, 0.5 mL of test formulations FC1 and FPC (0.05% clobetasol propionate cream) were topically applied to the proximal region of adult rats daily for 13 days. After euthanasia, approximately 2.5 cm of the proximal portion of each animal’s tail was cut and placed in 10% buffered formalin. Then, each tail fragment was processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE), and the results obtained from the histological sections indicated a 61% reduction in stratum corneum for animals treated with the A. vera hydrogel (FC1G) and 66% for animals treated with clobetasol propionate (PCG), compared to the group of animals that did not receive treatment (WTG). This study led to the conclusion that compared to the classic treatment (clobetasol propionate), the 80% A. vera hydrogel showed no significant difference, being effective in controlling hyperkeratinization.
