Short-rotation crop (SRC) systems with woody species have been planted in Costa Rica. However, information about different tree species and spacing is limited. The objective of the present study was ...to examine biomass production and the physical, energy, and chemical properties of feedstock of four tropical tree species (Cordia alliodora, Dipteryx panamensis, Gmelina arborea, and Tectona grandis) in 34-month-old plants planted at four spacings (0.5×1.0 m, 1.0×1.0 m, 1.0×2.0 m, and 2.0×2.0 m). The highest mortality rate (50%) was found in G. arborea; however, diameter, height, basal area, and biomass production in G. arborea plantations were higher than T. grandis, C. alliodora, and D. panamensis. Spacing effects on diameter, height, basal area, and biomass production were observed in 10-month-olds. Wide spacing presented the highest values in diameter and height, but the highest biomass production was found in the narrow spacing. Also, biomass distribution was different in D. panamensis in relation to other species. Specify gravity, density, and moisture content of biomass showed high variation between species and spacing, but the energy and chemical properties of biomass showed few differences. These results suggest that these four species were uniform in terms of their energy and chemical properties, regardless of the spacing used. Finally, three species (G. arborea, C. alliodora, and T. grandis) presented important potential for use in SRC systems. G. arborea was the species with the highest production but a high mortality rate.
Introducción. La ausencia de información económica constituye una barrera para el fomento de sistemas agroforestales (SAF). El componente forestal podría representar una contribución importante en la ...economía y aumento de biodiversidad de los SAF con café, que mantiene una huella de carbono alta y se desarrolla en más de 93 600 ha en 8 regiones de Costa Rica. Se requiere un nuevo modelo de asociación café con árboles maderables, que aporte valor económico, adicional a los servicios ambientales tradicionales. Objetivo. Determinar los costos del cultivo de árboles maderables de sombra en SAF de café. Materiales y métodos. Se reporta la estructura de costos de cultivo de maderables en cafetales, basada en árboles individuales por su aplicabilidad. La base de datos se construyó a partir de experiencias en SAF establecidas en cooperativas de café. El modelo se basa en el cultivo máximo de 275 árboles.ha-1 (6 x 6 m en tresbolillo), que permite efectuar un raleo (50%) al año 7, con especies como laurel (Cordia alliodora) y cedro (Cedrela odorata) principalmente, en altitudes entre 700 a 1450 msnm. Resultados. El costo del cultivo de un árbol hasta el año 15 es de ¢2386.árbol-1 (US$4 con tasa de cambio de ¢600), 50% corresponde a mano de obra, 24% a regencia y asistencia técnica, 15% insumos y 11% al costo del árbol. El laurel interceptó un 60% de radiación sin afectación de la producción de 36,5 fanegas por ha de café ovatá a 1200 msnm. Conclusiones. El costo total para cultivar 275 árboles maderables.ha-1 en un SAF café es de ¢2386.árbol-1 (US$3,98). Un escenario de financiamiento podría realizar un aporte de capital de ¢950 por árbol en el año 0, otro aporte en el año 5 de ¢850, para un total de ¢1750.árbol-1 ($2,9). Sin embargo, el modelo de financiamiento actual del FONAFIFO para SAF café, podría mantener su esquema actual de aportes de capital en 5 años y mismo monto de ¢2000 por árbol, con el fin de evitar el efecto de la volatilidad en los precios de los insumos. El costo del cultivo de árboles maderables como sombra en café es bajo y tendría un alto impacto económico, social y ambiental en la caficultura.
Dipteryx panamensis is used in reforestation in Costa Rica and a genetic improvement program has been recently started in the country. The objective of the present study was to study the effect of ...tree trunk height on the variation of bark, sapwood, heartwood, green density (GD), specific gravity (SG) and green moisture content in green condition (MC-G), in a collection of 8-year-old provenances/progenies planted in the town of Florencia in San Carlos in the northern region of Costa Rica The wood of each of 17 families were studied based on 3 of their progenies, evaluating the properties relative to 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the commercial height. According to the results, tree diameter and bark thickness showed no statistical differences in their values across trunk. Significant differences were found in diameter and percentage of heartwood and sapwood between provenances and families. The thickness and percentage of sapwood, thickness and percentage of bark, diameter, pith percentage and percentage of pith eccentricity, showed no significant differences between families. SG and the MC-G presented significant variation between provenances, while GD registered differences at above 25 % commercial height. The variation of physical properties, especially SG, between families within each provenance, shows selection potential for genetic improvement, focusing particularly on the bottom section of the tree.
Introducción. Tectona grandis es la especie con la mayor área plantada en Costa Rica, por los altos precios en el mercado internacional. La producción de plantas para reforestación se ha tecnificado ...en el país, se desarrolla basado en tecnologías de ambientes protegidos, que permiten aumentar la productividad, disminuir costos de operación y ofrecer material de siembra durante todo el año. Objetivo. Evaluar el efecto de dos sustratos y cinco densidades de siembra en la productividad de minijardines clonales de Tectona grandis dentro de un ambiente protegido. Materiales y métodos. Se caracterizaron mediante análisis de granulometría y retención de humedad, cuatro sustratos inertes de fácil adquisición, de ellos se seleccionó el polvo de piedra como óptimo. Se estableció un ensayo experimental con diseño factorial 2x5 en San Carlos, Costa Rica, para evaluar dos sustratos (polvo de piedra solo y con 25 % de carbón) y cinco densidades de siembra (cm) de 10x10, 10x5, 7x5, 10x10 con dos plantas por hoyo y 10x10 con una planta en el medio. Cada densidad tuvo cuatro clones como efecto repetición. El ensayo se evaluó durante cinco ciclos continuos de producción de enero a setiembre del 2021. Resultados. El uso del polvo de piedra sin carbón como sustrato, registró la mayor productividad a un menor costo. El arreglo espacial de siembra de 10x10 cm con una planta en el centro (n=145 plantas/m2), registró la mayor producción de brotes por planta madre (1,16). El arreglo 7x5 cm aumentó la productividad hasta en 206 brotes m2/mes. Conclusión. El cambio de densidad de siembra del minijardín clonal, en una primera etapa a 10x10 cm con una planta en el centro, resultó en alto impacto en productividad (74 %), mayor eficiencia en el uso del espacio y mejor gradualidad del cambio en el sistema operativo.
La teca es una de las especies comerciales plantadas en el trópico con mayor valor en el mundo. La cooperativa internacional de mejoramiento genético GENFORES, establecida en Costa Rica, ha liderado ...el mejoramiento genético de la especie en América Latina. El estudio se realizó con el objetivo de seleccionar los clones con mayor adaptabilidad específica al Pacífico seco de Costa Rica y de otras regiones tropicales secas. La investigación se desarrolló en Nicoya, Guanacaste (Pacífico norte de Costa Rica), donde se evaluaron 31 genotipos durante 13 años continuos (2006-2019), con base en el crecimiento en diámetro, volumen comercial y la calidad del fuste. Mediante el software Selegen-REML/BLUP se obtuvieron los parámetros genéticos, el ranking de selección y la ganancia genética estimada. A los 8,9 años fue la edad más temprana donde se registraron los valores más altos de heredabilidad individual y de heredabilidad media clonal para el diámetro (h2g = 0,12 y h2mc = 0,82) y para el volumen comercial (h2g = 0,075 y h2mc = 0,74). Plantaciones comerciales establecidas con los mejores 10 clones, a los 12,9 años de edad podrían alcanzar un volumen comercial de 0,88 m3árbol-1, que corresponde a una ganancia genética de un 11% con respecto a la mejor semilla comercial disponible del huerto semillero. El diámetro alcanzaría 28 cm a esta misma edad. Tales resultados permitirán reducir cerca de 2 años la edad de cosecha de plantaciones de teca en el Pacífico seco del país.
Introduction. In Costa Rica, an incidence of nearly 40 % has been reported for a disease caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata in commercial plantations of Gmelina arborea (melina), which is the second ...most widely planted forest tree species in the country. Consequently, there is a pressing need to explore genetic material that exhibit resistance to this pathogen. Objective. To evaluate two methods of C. fimbriata inoculation and their effect on elite genotypes of melina, for their use within the melina genetic improvement program at the international forest genetic improvement cooperative GENFORES. Materials and methods. A pathogenicity test was established using the CIF 001 isolate of C. fimbriata under greenhouse conditions, in Santa Clara, San Carlos, Costa Rica. Two inoculation methods were evaluated in five elite genotypes from October 2019 to January 2020. The effect of the pathogen was evaluated by measuring total height development, basal diameter, number of leaves, incidence, and internal injury within the plant. The assessment was conducted at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days. Results. Mortality was observed from day 38 and reached an incidence of 26.7 % at 120 days. The treatment using solid medium displayed the highest incidence percentage. Genotypes 15N and 58 exhibited high susceptibility to the CIF 001 isolate, whereas genotypes 1 and 57 exhibited high tolerance. Based on the results, it was determined that the pathogenicity test of C. fimbriata on melina can be evaluated at 90 days. Conclusion. Solid medium was the most effective method for inoculating melina with C. fimbriata (isolate CIF 001). Evaluations showed the need to assess results at least 90 days after inoculation. Based on the analysis of the internal lesion, genotype 1 was identified as highly resistant to the effect of the pathogen. The inclusion of this genotype as an evaluation technique will substantially enhance the protocol for assessing tolerance to the pathogen.
La Gmelina arborea es una de las especies de mayor importancia en proyectos de reforestación comercial en Costa Rica y actualmente, forma parte importante del programa de mejoramiento genético en ...Costa Rica liderado por GENFORES. El objetivo del presente estudio consistió en determinar los parámetros genéticos de 54 clones de melina utilizados en un ensayo clonal en la región Caribe de Costa Rica. El ensayo se estableció con un diseño de bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones por tratamiento, con un distanciamiento de 4 m x 3 m. Se calcularon parámetros genéticos a los 10, 22 y 34 meses, para las variables diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP), altura comercial, volumen comercial y calidad del fuste, utilizando el software SELEGEN, el cual se basa en el método REML/BLUP, además, se realizaron correlaciones genéticas entre las variables evaluadas. Los resultados muestran mayor heredabilidad individual en sentido amplio para las variables de volumen comercial y DAP, además, reflejan que la calidad del fuste a los 22 y 34 meses presenta los mayores coeficientes de heredabilidad individual y heredabilidad media del clon. Las correlaciones genéticas reflejan valores altos y positivos entre las variables DAP-volumen comercial y altura comercial-calidad del fuste, a los 34 meses de edad, con un 0.97 y 0.74, respectivamente. Los clones 17 y 34, mostraron ser los mejores en el ranking genético en términos de volumen comercial; el material de control y el clon 19, fueron los que se ubicaron en las últimas posiciones del ranking. Se obtuvo una ganancia genética a los 34 meses de edad de 6.11 % y 9.36 % en DAP y volumen comercial, respectivamente. Se concluye que existe variabilidad genética en los materiales genéticos utilizados, que permiten obtener ganancias genéticas importantes, sobre todo si se utilizan los primeros 10 clones del ranking genético de las accesiones evaluadas.
Teak has become one of the most widely planted species in tropical regions of the world, given its high price for its timber in international markets. This has motivated the development of tree ...improvement programs in the Latin American region and in the tropical world in general. The latest advances have achieved clonal forestry at an operational scale. Recently, important efforts are being made to advance towards the next breeding generation, since knowledge about floral biology and pollen management have become important issues. A breeding program is being developed through the Tree Improvement Cooperative GENFORES—a vinculation model between the academy and forestry companies that was initiated in Costa Rica and now involves six Latin American countries. In order to advance into the next breeding generations, building capacities in topics such as pollen banks requires pollen quality, thus enabling the exchange of pollen among cooperative members. Pollen fertility studies are of considerable value in breeding programs, in order to determine pollen viability and germination in collections of genotypes, before going into mating operational activities. In this study, we optimized pollen quality analysis protocols in terms of the viability and germination of fresh teak pollen. Results of this research show that 90% viability and 28% germination can be achieved in fresh pollen grains, both inside and outside the anther, previously dehydrated in silica gel for 2 to 4 h (40% and 33% humidity, respectively). Brewbacker and Kwack (BK) medium at 10% of its salts + 10% sucrose and at a pH of 7 must be used as the germination medium. It is possible to evaluate teak pollen quality using the parameters defined in this study, which will in turn allow pollen management and purification, providing an opportunity for carrying out controlled crosses at an operational scale as part of teak breeding programs.
The Dipteryx genus has a natural distribution throughout several tropical countries in Latin America. This taxon has several tree species, all recognized for their high-density wood. The objective of ...this research was to study the variation and genetic control of several wood properties, including bark, sapwood, heartwood, green density (GD), specific gravity (SG), moisture content in green condition (MC-G), and mechanical properties, in a Dipteryx panamensis provenance/progeny test at 8 years old. The results showed that bark varied little among families and provenances, but heartwood (diameter and percentage) showed high genetic variation. SG and MC-G showed significant variation between provenances and families, while GD showed little variation. Among the mechanical properties evaluated, the greatest genetic variation was observed in the MOR in bending and shear stress. Families from the Coope San Juan provenance registered the highest values in all wood properties investigated, and families from Puerto Viejo obtained the lowest. Family heritability and the coefficient of genetic variation exhibited high values in heartwood/sapwood and the MOR in bending (h2 > 0.9 and CV > 20%) and lower values in SG, MC-G, compression stress, and shear stress. D. panamensis wood properties have a high potential to be improved through breeding programs.

production, in this case with melina (Gmelina arborea), which is the second most important ...forest species for commercial reforestation in Costa Rica. Objective. To determine the optimal selection age of melina in Costa Rica, by
evaluating four genetic characters. Materials and methods. The study was carried out in Siquirres and Pérez Zeledón,
the Caribbean region and the southern zone of Costa Rica, respectively. A randomized complete block design was
used with four replicates (Sites 1 and 3) and six replicates (Site 2) per treatment. The initial spacing was 4 m x 3 m
for the El Porvenir trial and 4 m x 4 m for the Siquirres and La Ceniza trials. Genetic parameters were calculated at
different ages, for the variables diameter at breast height (DBH), commercial height, commercial volume, and shaft
quality, with the SELEGEN software, which is based on the REML / BLUP method, in addition, genetic correlations
were made between the evaluated variables. Results. The DBH and the commercial volume were the characters with
the greatest genetic control, they presented the highest mean values of individual heritability and clonal mean, between
2.8 and 4 years of age. The highest genetic correlations (> 80%), between the DAP and commercial volume variables,
occurred from 2.8 years of age, which increased in later ages until reaching values greater than 90 %. Conclusion.
The range between 2.8 and 4 years could be determined as a possible age of genetic selection for melina.
Introducción. La edad de selección temprana permite acelerar los programas de mejoramiento genético y
optimizar la producción forestal, en este caso con melina (Gmelina arborea), la cual es la segunda especie forestal
más importante para la reforestación comercial en Costa Rica. Objetivo. Determinar la edad óptima de selección de
melina en Costa Rica, mediante la evaluación de cuatro caracteres genéticos. Materiales y métodos. El estudio se
llevó a cabo en Siquirres y Pérez Zeledón, región Caribe y zona sur de Costa Rica, respectivamente. Se utilizó un
diseño de bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones (sitios 1 y 3) y seis repeticiones (sitio 2) por tratamiento.
El distanciamiento inicial fue de 4 m x 3 m para el ensayo del El Porvenir y de 4 m x 4 m para los ensayos de
Siquirres y La Ceniza. Se calcularon parámetros genéticos a diferentes edades, para las variables diámetro a la altura
del pecho (DAP), altura comercial, volumen comercial y calidad del fuste, con el software SELEGEN, el cual se basa
en el método REML/BLUP, además, se realizaron correlaciones genéticas entre las variables evaluadas. Resultados.
El DAP y el volumen comercial fueron los caracteres con mayor control genético, presentaron los mayores valores
promedio de heredabilidad individual y media clonal, entre los 2,8 y 4 años de edad. Las mayores correlaciones
genéticas (>80 %), entre las variables DAP y volumen comercial, se presentaron a partir de los 2,8 años de edad, que
aumentan en edades posteriores hasta alcanzar valores mayores a 90 %. Conclusión. Pudo determinarse el rango entre
los 2,8 y 4 años, como posible edad de selección genética para melina.
