An effect on the muon catalyzed fusion (μCF) of the
3He originating from the tritium decay was studied by measuring the time-dependent change of the fusion-neutron disappearance rate (
λ
n) in the ...deuterium and tritium (DT) mixtures with various tritium concentrations,

. A clear difference between the solid and the liquid DT mixtures due to the
3He accumulation effect was observed: in solid
λ
n increased with the time after solidification, whereas in liquid
λ
n did not change. This indicates that
3He produced in the solid DT mixtures is trapped. Admitting that all the
3He remain in solid, the muon transfer rate from tμ to
3He is determined to be about 4×10
9 s
−1, consistent with the theoretical prediction.
We apply muon spin relaxation (μSR) technique to study the magnetic behaviors of the photosensitive molecular magnet. 1:1 complexes of bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonate) manganese(II), {Mn(hfac)2} with ...diazodi(4-pyridyl)methane as a photoresponsible magnetic coupler. The μSR time spectra have been collected before and after laser irradiation as a function of temperature from 290 K to 10 K and as a function of irradiation time during 30 hours. While we are not successful in detecting meaningful effects of irradiation at the present stage, we discuss potential usability of μSR technique to reveal the expected unconventional feature of the photo- induced magnetic order.
We have performed mu exp + SR studies on a single-crystal UPt sub 3 by implanting spin-polarized mu exp + parallel to the c-axis in a zero magnetic field from 10 K down to 20-8 mK in order to study ...magnetism and superconductivity. Down to 20.8 mK, zero-field mu exp + SR spectra have not exhibited a significant change; thus, neither a spontaneous magnetization in the B phase nor a precursor of a long-range magnetic ordering has been observed down to 20.8 mK.
Dermoid cyst or epidermoid cyst of the oral cavity usually occurs in the floor of the mouth. We encountered a 21-year-old woman who had developed epidermoid cyst in the oral floor. Since infancy she ...had been aware of a swelling in the oral floor. Recently, the swelling began to grow larger gradually. The lesion was excised under general anesthesia by intraoral approach. The swelling was spherical in shape, measured 50 x 45 x 40 mm in size, and weighed 40 g. Histopathological examination revealed keratinized, stratified squamous epithelium on the cyst wall and marked deposition of melanin at the base of the epithelium.
The accumulation of helium entities produced through beta-decay of tritium represents a major obstacle for the process of muon-catalyzed fusion in hydrogen. Using ab initio Hartree-Fock cluster ...methods at the MP2 level, we have investigated the trapping properties of He+, He0 and (He-H)+ impurities at interstitial sites in solid hydrogen. Our results indicate that the positive charge of He+ is distributed to the surrounding H_2 molecules, resulting in a significant lowering of the energy which leads to a large binding energy of about 8.3~eV for He+. On the other hand, the neutral He0 remains essentially unbound. Both entities might however be trapped equally strongly due to the diffusion barrier involved when moving to an adjacent interstitial site. Consequences of these findings for the trapping of (He-H)+ will be discussed as well. Finally, results of our studies on the possibility of helium nucleation in solid hydrogen will be presented.
