Abstract only
Increased sympathetic muscle mechanoreflex sensitivity and attenuated sympathetic muscle metaboreflex sensitivity have been described in heart failure (HF) patients. We tested the ...hypothesis that exercise training (ET) would improve sympathetic mechano and metaboreflex sensitivity in HF patients. 24 consecutive, randomized, HF patients, Functional Class II‐III NYHA, EF≤40% were divided into two groups: Exercise‐trained (n=12, 55±2 years) and untrained (n=12, 54±2 years). 10 normal controls (NC) were also studied. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) was directly recorded from the peroneal nerve. Mechanoreceptors were activated by passive exercise. Metaboreceptors were activated by post‐exercise circulatory arrest. ET consisted of three 60‐minutes exercise sessions per week for 4 months. ET significantly reduced MSNA in HF patients (34 vs. 40 bursts/min, P<0.05). ET significantly reduced MSNA responses to passive exercise (Δ = 2 vs. 5 bursts/min, P<0.05) and increased MNSA responses during post‐exercise circulatory arrest (Δ = 5 vs. −1 bursts/min, P<0.0 5). These changes were so dramatic that the difference between HF patients and NC were no longer observed. No changes in untrained HF patients were found. In conclusion, ET restores sympathetic muscle mechano and metaboreflex sensitivity in HF patients, which may contribute to the reduction in MSNA and clinical outcomes in these patients.
The present report describes a case of cutaneous protothecosis caused by Prototheca wickerhamii in a nonimmunocompromised Brazilian female. Dermatological examination revealed a 15‐cm diffusely ...infiltrated eczema‐like plaque recovered with many pustule‐like lesions on the right forearm. We emphasize the mycological and pathological aspects of this infection that can lead to misdiagnosis. The patient was successfully treated with itraconazole.
The present report describes a case of onychoprotothecosis caused by Prototheca wickerhamii in a nonimmunocompromized female. Dermatological examination showed yellowish discoloration of the left and ...right forefinger nails, showing onicolysis and hyperkeratosis. The repeated isolation of the algae Prototheca (organisms morula‐like) as well as the repeated culture in media, Sabouraud agar, confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was successfully treated with tioconazol 1% topic solution. The aim of this paper was to present a rare condition.
This revelatory, fully illustrated anthology explores modernism's complex legacy in Latin America--featuring original research by renowned architects, historians, and curators from the region. Beyond ...the Supersquare: Art and Architecture in Latin America after Modernism, which developed from a symposium presented by the Bronx Museum of the Arts in 2011, showcases original essays by distinguished Latin American architects, historians, and curators whose research examines architecture and urban design practices in the region during a significant period of the twentieth century. Drawing from the exuberant architectural projects of the 1940s to the 1960s, as well as from critically engaged artistic practices of the present day, the essays in this collection reveal how the heroic visions and utopian ideals popular in architectural discourse during the modernist era bore complicated legacies for Latin America--the consequences of which are evident in the vastly uneven economic conditions and socially disparate societies found throughout the region today. The innovative contributions in this volume address how the modernist movement came into being in Latin America and compellingly explore how it continues to resonate in today's cultural discourse. Beyond the Supersquare takes themes traditionally examined within the strict field of urbanism and architecture and explores them against a broader range of disciplines, including the global economy, political science, gender, visual arts, philosophy, and urban planning. Containing a breadth of scholarship, this book offers a compelling and distinctive view of contemporary life in Latin America. Among the topics explored are the circulation of national cultural identities through architectural media, the intersection of contemporary art and urban social politics, and the recovery of canonically overlooked figures in art and architectural histories, such as Lina Bo Bardi and Joao Filgueiras Lima ("Lele") from Brazil, Juan Legarreta of Mexico, and Henry Klumb in Puerto Rico.
The last country to enter the history of Western-style industrialization, Brazil still bears the marks of the prehistoric period and of Africa, rich in popular élan. All the contradictions of the ...Western fallacy came immediately to the fore in the course of Brazilʹs modernization process, leaving strong vestiges of a situation undergoing crisis. A process that took centuries to unfold in industrialized nations, here lasted only a few years. An abrupt, unplanned industrialization, structurally imported, led the country to experience a redoubtable natural occurrence, not a process created by people. The sinister diktats of real-estate speculation, the non-existing planning for

The growth of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) can be affected by interference of several factor, including the availability of water and nitrogen. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the ...influence of the nitrogen applied by subsurface drip irrigation system on the growth of sugarcane cultivated under full irrigation through the cycle. The experiment was was installed in field conditions, in the experimental area of the IFGoiano - Campus Rio Verde, GO. Experimental design comprised randomized block, analyzed in subdivide split-plot, with four replications. The factors evaluated in the plots were nitrogen application at the doses of 0 and 100 kg ha-1 as urea, while the subplots consisted of nine times of evaluation (90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270, DAP 300 and 330), and for number of stems were used five times of evaluation (210, 240, 270, 300 and 330 DAP) as well as for number of tillers and number of plants (90, 105, 120, 135 and 150 DAP). Were evaluated the plant height, stem diameter, number of stems, leaf length, number of leafs, leaf area, number of tillers and number of plants. There was not interference of nitrogen fertilization to any of the sugarcane growth parameters analyzed. The morphological alterations observed in sugarcane occurred due to the crop cycle.
This work aimed to evaluate maturation rate and production of ATR under influence of different blades of irrigation with and without effect of fertirrigation with N and K combined in the southwest of ...the state of Goiás. The plant material was obtained by manual cutting, from a cultivated area with variety RB 85-5453,which presents as main characteristics high sugar content and precocity, in Federal Institute Goiano - Rio Verde - GO, in conditions of plant cane. The experimental design used was the randomized blocks fully randomized 5 x 2 factorial design with four repetitions The treatments consisted of five levels of hydration (100, 75, 50, 25 and 0% of soil moisture at field capacity) combined with and without application of N and K way irrigation water (fertirrigation). It was carried out the monitoring of the brix of cane in the field, in the last four fortnights before harvest period, was cut irrigation the experiment. In accordance with the rate of maturation of sugar cane irrigated presented a higher concentration of brix at end the cycle, period before harvest, Promoting a more accelerated maturation that was more evident still in the cane fertirrigated, corresponding to values of anticipation of cycle of up to 15 days for blade 100% irrigated and 30 days for 50 and 75% fertirrigated.
