Seven first-grade children with conduct disorders and/or hyperactivity attended full-day sessions at a laboratory school classroom. During an 8-week period, the classroom lighting conditions ...alternated at the end of each week. During odd-numbered weeks, the classroom was illuminated by a standard cool-white fluorescent system. On even-numbered weeks, illumination was a daylight-simulating fluorescent system of equal footcandles with controls for purported soft X rays and radio frequency (RF). There were no effects of lighting conditions on hyperactive behavior as assessed by (a) independent observations of task orientation or (b) ratings of activity level. A Critical Flicker Fusion (CFF) measure, a reported indicator of visual-sensory fatigue, indicated that the daylight-simulating condition was associated with a decreasing CFF across weeks.

At the request of leading national parole organizations, the
National Parole Institutes undertook a study to determine
whether a useful information system describing the results of
parole can be ...developed as a joint effort of paroling authori
ties.
A tentative model for uniform parole statistics was devised
by representatives of twenty-nine parole agencies. The model
was tested by eight agencies, which contributed data monthly,
and was examined further by sixteen agencies. The result is a
workable data collection system, a common vocabulary, and pro
cedures for feedback to participating agencies.
The data collected during the study demonstrate that com
parisons of agency effectiveness must take into account differ
ences in the kinds of offenders paroled.
The study shows that the tentative model ultimately can pro
vide a firm basis for meaningful analyses of parole experience
based on uniform reporting from all our diverse parole systems.
A three-year study has been initiated to develop the Uniform
Parole Reporting System.
Although the idea of virtual organizations is not new, recent developments in information technology capabilities, such as the World Wide Web and artificial intelligence, allow the development of new ...implementations of virtual organizations that exploit the capabilities of those new technologies. The use of agents, facilitators, and knowledge query and manipulation languages, together with negotiated ontologies, can provide a workable, reliable, and flexible base of systems used in creating the platforms for virtual organizations. A number of firms have actively pursued the use of virtual organizations, such as Lockheed's Agile Cable Production Service virtual organization. Practitioners have begun to develop a basic set of support organizations for virtual organizations such as the Agility Forum at Lehigh University. Research information is increasingly available over the WWW. Virtual office systems have been developed recently, especially for the procurement process. Substantial research effort has been devoted to the generation of virtual organizations for concurrent engineering.
