The aims of this study is to examine the effects of caffeine intake in sprinters on reaction time, speed, acceleration and balance. A total of 31 sprinters (18 female, 13 male) from the athletics ...team of university faculty of sports sciences participated in the study. Sprinters were divided into two groups, caffeine and placebo, and their balance, reaction time, 30-meter running time and 15-meter acceleration performances were measured. The Wilcoxon t-Test and the Mann-Whitney U test were applied to the data obtained on the SPSS 23.0 package program. As a result of the study, the number of errors in the balance test decreased significantly in both the experimental group and the control group while a significant decrease was observed in block takeoff reaction time only in the experimental group. In conclusion, it was determined that while caffeine intake did not have a significant effect on acceleration and running times, block take off reaction time created a significant difference in the experimental group and could provide an advantage to the sprinters. Therefore, it can be said that caffeinated gum may be a good ergogenic aid to improve reaction performance in sprinters.
In football, diet has a highly important role in the development of performance. Assessing the nutrition-related knowledge of footballers and increasing their awareness may affect their health and ...performance. In this study, which was carried out for this purpose, whether the Mediterranean diet had an effect on the gastrointestinal health of professional footballers was investigated. The sample of the study included a total of 196 active licensed male footballers who were professional players in the 2nd and 3rd football leagues of Turkey. The mean age of the participants was 23.46±4.18 and their mean experience in licensed football was 11.73±5.07 years. The adherence of the participants to the Mediterranean diet was assessed using the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener, while the frequencies of gastrointestinal symptoms were examined using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale. The data were transferred to the SPSS 26.0 program and analyzed using Pearson’s Correlation Analysis, Independent-Samples T-Tests, One-Way ANOVA and descriptive statistics. According to the results of the analyses, no significant relationship was found between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and gastrointestinal symptoms (p>0.05). While the gastrointestinal symptom scores of the participants did not vary significantly based on their league tiers or positions (p>0.05), their Mediterranean diet adherence scores varied significantly based on their league tiers (p<0.05). Consequently, it was determined that the adherence of the participants to the Mediterranean diet increased as their league tier increased, but adherence to the Mediterranean diet did not create any positive or negative effect on their gastrointestinal system symptoms.
Purpose
The prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) ranging from 6.6% to 83% has been reported in different case series. The pathophysiology of RLS in uremia is still unclear. The aim of this ...study was to assess the frequency of RLS in the hemodialysis patients and to explore depression and associated detrimental impact on quality of life.
Methods
The diagnosis of RLS was made using the criteria of the International Restless Legs Study Group. The polyneuropathy was diagnosed according to clinical signs and symptoms. Each subject completed three questionnaires: Beck Depression Inventory, Short Form-36 Quality of Life Scale, and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Biochemical parameters including hemoglobin, serum ferritin, and Kt/V index were collected. The data of the patients with and without RLS or clinical polyneuropathy (PNP) were compared.
Results
There were 41 male and 40 female patients. RLS, PNP, and high ESS scores were seen in 12%, 47%, and 7% of hemodialysis patients, respectively. Beck depression inventory scores were high in patients with RLS when compared to those without (28.9 ± 9,
p
= 0.007). General health score in the RLS patients, physical functioning score in the PNP patients were significantly lower (GH, 20.7;
p
= 0.036; PF, 10.5;
p
< 0.005). We did not observe any association between hemoglobin, ferritin levels, and Kt/V index in the RLS patients. However, Kt/V index in the PNP patients were low.
Conclusions
The frequency of RLS in hemodialysis patients was lower than that reported from similar studies in other countries. The presence of RLS and PNP in hemodialyzed patients negatively affects quality of life, and RLS contributes to occurrence of depression.
Objectives
Epidemiological studies indicate that more than half of the elderly population suffers from chronic sleep disturbances. Therefore, this descriptive study was conducted to examine sleep ...quality, excessive daytime sleepiness, daytime napping, and depression among a population of nursing home residents.
Methods
The study’s sample included 73 elderly people living in a nursing home in Turkey. Geriatric Depression Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and a sleep diary were used.
Results
The participants’ mean age was 74.0 years (standard deviation (SD) = 6.7). Forty-four of the individuals had a poor sleep quality prevalence of 60.3%; and the mean global PSQI score was 6.6 (SD = 3.6). Their mean ESS score was 5.9 (SD = 4.6) and 14 participants (19.2%) had daytime sleepiness. The mean daytime napping duration was 1.0 h (SD = 1.3) according to the participants’ sleep diaries. The study found that 60.3% of the participants were depressed, furthermore the mean depression score was 15.9 (SD = 7.0). There was a significant correlation between the PSQI subscores; subjective sleep quality, the sleep latency, and sleep disturbances scores and depression scores. Also, daytime napping frequency and daytime napping duration, according to the sleep diary, were correlated positively with depression scores.
Conclusions
The current study’s results confirm the previously reported high prevalence of poor sleep quality and depression in this nursing home population. Clinicians need to assess patients appropriately to identify high prevalence of sleep problems and depression in nursing home patients and initiate appropriate referrals and interventions.
The primary aim of this study was to investigate bone loss in the glenoid with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in posterior shoulder instability with only a labral tear.
A total of 76 patients ...operated on due to posterior and anteroposterior shoulder instability only with a labral tear between 2006 and 2019 (n=40, n=36; respectively) were included in this study. The instability type, a presence of an additional SLAP lesion, the number of dislocations, and the MRI-based measurements (the glenoid diameter and the bone defect size in the glenoid, the Hill-Sachs lesion (HSL), and the reverse Hill-Sachs lesion (rHSL) length, the angle and the arc length of HSL and rHSL, the humerus head diameter and its area) were analyzed.
Size of the anterior glenoid defect, the rHSL measurements (length, angle, arc length), and the ratio of anterior glenoid defect size to glenoid diameter were significantly higher for anteroposterior instability (p<0.01) cases. There was no significant difference (p=0.49, 0.64, 0.82; respectively) for the presence of an additional SLAP pathology, the glenoid diameter, the posterior glenoid defect, and the ratio of posterior glenoid defect size to glenoid diameter in posterior and anteroposterior instability groups. The increased number of dislocations was associated with increased rHSL length and total arc length (p=0.04 and 0.03; respectively). Additional superior labrum anteroposterior (SLAP) lesion in posterior shoulder instabilities was not associated with bone defect size (p=0.29).
Although the posterior shoulder instability only with a labral tear is likely to cause a bone defect, we have shown that the reason for the instability is not expected to be caused by the bone defect. Therefore, this study points out that only soft tissue repair without considering the bone defect could be promising in this patient group.
In this study, we aimed to determine the different sociodemographic variables of polygamous and monogamous wives, and the relationship between depression and polygamous marriage. Seventy-nine ...polygamous wives and 73 monogamous wives from Kahramanmaras, located in southern Turkey, were interviewed. After reviewing the data, we suggest that there is a statistically significant difference between polygamous wives and monogamous wives in terms of Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores. The results highlighted many implications for clinical practice and for future research. Additional research needs to be conducted in order to investigate the effects of polygamy on women's mental health.
Background: The number of immigrant children admitted to public sector healthcare facilities is increasing. However, comparatively few studies investigated its effects on health systems, especially ...in the orthopedics discipline. This research investigates if there is a significant difference in admission to orthopedics and traumatology outpatient clinics (O&T) between immigrants and local children.
Materials and Methods: Immigrant (IP) and local patients (LP) under 18 admitted to the O&T of a tertiary hospital between 2019-2021 were included in this retrospective study. Demographic data of patients, number of admission in a year, place of admission, the reason for admission, treatment method, radiological imaging, and diagnoses (soft tissue trauma (STT), developmental hip dysplasia (DDH), etc.) were evaluated for both groups.
Results: 1009 patients were included (n=481 LP, n=528 IP). The number of admissions was higher in IP between 1 and 2 years (p=0.02). The consultations of IP from the emergency department and other departments were statistically higher than those of LP (p<0.001). Fracture/complications and STT are the most common diagnoses in local and immigrant groups. The third most common diagnosis was DDH in LP and general examination in IP. Examinations with MRI and no radiological imaging were more frequent in IP than in LP. Conclusions: It is noteworthy that the number of admissions to O&T and consultations from other services is higher in IP than the LP. Increasing physicians' awareness of cultural differences and expectations and providing health education to immigrant families through professional translators in their preferred language can diminish the load on healthcare.
