With the increasing development and popularisation of information and communication technology, new challenges are posed to higher education in the modernisation of teaching in order to make ...education and training of students as effective as possible. It is therefore very important to develop and experiment with appropriate development tools, explore their benefits and effectiveness, and integrate them into existing learning strategies. The emergence of a computer-generated digital environment that can be directly experienced, actions that can determine what is happening in it, growth of technological characteristics, and decline in prices of virtual reality hardware leads to a situation that cannot be ignored. This paper investigated users' perceptions on the potential use of fully immersive virtual reality head-mounted displays in a discrete-event simulation of logistics processes. The dynamic nature of virtual environments requires active participation which causes greater engagement, motivation, and interest aided by interaction and challenges.
The paper analyses the changes in relationship between documents in textual corpus that occur due to the translation into another language. Authors analyzed the similarities between documents in ...original corpus, in Croatian, and compared them with the corresponding documents in translated corpus, in English. The changes were analyzed using two measures, chi-square test’s P-value and new proposed measure, correction coefficient.
Firefighting and evacuation training are important tasks in maritime education and training, especially for crews working on large passenger ships, to ensure the safety of the vessel, cargo and ...passengers. With the evolution of virtual reality (VR) technology and the introduction of wearable hardware, a change in paradigm has happened in firefighting and evacuation training where these new technologies are being introduced. This paper serves as a review on the use of VR technology in maritime firefighting and evacuation training, trying to answer the following questions: what is the current state of using VR technology, and what are the research gaps that need to be addressed to further accelerate the implementation of VR? Research shows that other industries have adopted the use of VR technology relatively quickly, but the maritime industry still seems reluctant. As for the research gaps, the physics-based modelling of fire spread is discussed along with two other topics: the lack of immersive solutions for evacuation and the potential for developing search and rescue scenarios onboard a ship.
Inland terminals are becoming important objects (knots) in today’s supply chain. This implies new methods to determine the location of inland terminal. Appropriate inland terminal location (ITL) ...decision depends on analyzing demand, employee’s availability, investment capabilities and other factors. In this paper we present gravity center method and median method as quantitative ones and Analytic Hierarchical Process (AHP), ELECTRE and PROMETHEE as complex decision methods to determine inland terminal location. Given methods are implemented on the example of inland terminal location determination in Republic of Croatia.
Container cargo flows in the Republic of Croatia have been insufficiently explored, as well as the quantity and destination of containerized cargo flows between the port of Rijeka and its hinterland. ...This paper defines containerized cargo flows between the port of Rijeka and its hinterland destinations by road and rail transport means. Based on the analysis of container cargo flows the potential location for inland terminal construction is defined in terms of shifting of container flows from road to rail.
Developed logistics systems have organized reverse logistics flows and are continuously analyzing product returns, tending to detect patterns in oscillations of returning products in certain time ...periods. Inventory management in reverse logistics systems depends on different criteria, regarding goods categories, formed contracts between subjects of supply chains, uncertainty in manufacturer's quantities of DOA (dead on arrival) products, etc. The developing logistics systems, such as the Croatian system, find reverse logistics issues overall, also regarding returned products inventory management, significantly complex, and do not provide systematic analysis. The paper discusses the problem of reverse logistics flow processing, detects current return quantities locked in inventories and suggests systematic application of analysis as the first step to organize inventories in unorganized reverse logistics systems.
This paper presents the structural analysis of a port community system (PCS) and its main stakeholders, both internal and external, who are involved in the execution of port business activities. ...Typical information and telecommunications infrastructure of a PCS is outlined, along with the main challenges in its introduction. Furthermore, a significant emphasis is put on information security within the PCS, presenting a firm base for the introduction of both the concept and the model of integral security. Finally, often very overlooked business functions - disaster recovery and top-level function of PCS business continuity, are defined in detail, along with the requirements for the creation of a robust business continuity plan, whose goal is to ensure the functioning of a PCS in case of disastrous event or a foreseen disruption in line with the PC ICT system risk analysis.
The use of specialised simulators as a form of experiential learning is an integral part of the education of students at maritime universities and of seafarers in various types of maritime vocational ...training centers. Conventional marine engine room simulators (MERS) are an essential equipment for gaining experience and have been used in maritime education and training (MET) for more than thirty years. As MERS have a low level of immersion, a computer simulation of an innovative virtual reality marine engine room has been designed, developed and tested to improve the education, training and assessment of marine engineering students and seafarers. User trials were conducted to investigate the impact of a fully immersive and interactive virtual reality on user perception, sense of presence, psychological impact, performance and efficiency compared to conventional systems, as well as interest in using the new technology.
