Detailed studies of exoskeleton, mouthparts, wing venation, endosternites, retal plates and male and female terminalia, has been used to improve the systematics and evolutionary studies of the Neotropical anthribids. In this approach S. fulvitarsis (type-species of the genus), S. longulus and S. frontalis were carefully compared including descriptions and illustrations of characters never studied. Among the species examined, S. frontalis display a distinct mimetic pattern with flies of the family Sarcophagidae. The hypothesis that this species does not belong in the genus Stenocerus when compared with the type-species and S. longulus is discussed based mainly on position of the eyes, lack of lateral carinae, lamina of metendosternite longer than arms and median rods of ovipositor narrowed in the proximal region.
This study dealt with the partition behavior and partial purification of hexokinase (HK) from baker's yeast by liquid-liquid extraction using aqueous two-phase polyethylene glycol (PEG)/citrate ...systems. First, we investigated the effect of agitation type (vortex and 8 rpm rotation) on the stability of the system, and then the effects of sodium citrate concentration, PEG concentration, and molar mass of PEG on the partition coefficient of this enzyme by using a 25 factorial experimental design. The results of this factorial experiment showed the possibility of a partial purification of HK by using two extraction steps, since the enzyme preferentially migrated to the top phase and the total proteins (mainly contaminants) remained in the bottom phase. The purification factor (PurTOP) of the enzyme in the top phase was 1.87, and the partition coefficient of the total proteins (KProt) was 0.47.
Tephrosia purpurea (L.) Pers., a member of the Fabaceae family, is a shrub popularly known in northeastern Brazil as "anil-bravo." The species is reported to have various biological properties, such ...as hepatoprotective, laxative, deobstruent, and diuretic activities. The plant is useful for treating bronchitis, bilious febrile attacks, and obstructions of the liver, spleen, and kidneys, and a decoction of its roots is used as a nematicide 1-3. In addition to its wound-healing, antileishmanial, anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial, and anti-lipid peroxidative effects, the potential use of T. purpurea for the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome has been recently reported 4-6. The genus Tephrosia, which is distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, is noted for the presence of flavonoids, especially rotenoids. The latter group is an interesting class of compounds showing primarily fish-poisoning, insecticidal, and antimicrobial activities 7-10. The aim of the presen ...
Piperaceae family is original from tropical regions and it shows more than 700 species around the world.
Piper gaudichaudianum Kunth is the specie more abundant in Brazil, occurring from Northeast to ...South Brazil. In this paper, it was investigated the influence of some experimental parameters on the pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) of
P. gaudichaudianum Kunth leaves, using petroleum ether as extractor solvent. The optimization of the main variables involved in the PLE process (extraction temperature and time) has been done by response surface methodology (RSM) using, as responses, the extraction yield and the chromatographic profile (GC/MS) of the extracts. The optimized procedure employed 3
g of ground leaves, 10
min of extraction and one cycle of extraction at 85
°C. The major compounds present in the petroleum ether extracts were: palmitic acid, stearic acid and nerolidol. The results presented in this work show the possibility of using a fast and easy process to recover compounds from
P. gaudichaudianum Kunth.

The GH deficiency syndrome in adults is characterized by changes in body composition, metabolic, cardiovascular and psychological profile. Such alterations fit the metabolic syndrome. Changes of ...blood pressure (BP) levels related to the presence of insulin resistance (IR) may be present in the GH-deficient adult prior to or after therapy with recombinant GH (hGH). The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between BP and IR in GH-deficient adults after 24 months of replacement with hGH. Thirteen GH-deficient adults were studied 7 men and 6 women, with an average age of 38.6+/-14.14 yr body mass index (BMI) 25.83+/-2.26 kg/m2. The BP was assessed by means of ambulatory monitoring of BP (AMBP), prior to the treatment and 12 and 24 months after replacement with hGH. Glucose metabolism was assessed by the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA), during the same periods. The average dosage of hGH utilized was 0.67+/-0.15 mg/day. In the analysis of BP levels, we observed a decrease of the diurnal systolic BP (SB P) (p=0.043) and a reduction of the diurnal systolic (p=0.002) and diastolic pressure loads (p=0.038). During the night there were no changes in BP levels. We observed an increase in the percentage of patients with a non-physiological nocturnal fall (non dippers) after replacement with hGH (61.53%). The mean HOMA, insulin and glucose in the fasting state did not present any statistically significant changes. Although the patients within the nondipper group had higher HOMA and insulin levels throughout the study, there were no changes in any of these parameters after GH replacement. All patients with HOMA >2.5 were within the non-dipper group, whereas all dippers had HOMA <2.5. In conclusion, 24 months of therapy with hGH do not seem to have affected glucose homeostasis, and since there is no relationship with the increase of the percentage of non-physiological nocturnal fall, we will need a longer observation time to discover the effects of this finding.

Research on tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) to date has focused mainly on the physical manifestations of the disease. In contrast, the psychosocial impact of TSC has received far less attention. The ...aim of this study was therefore to examine the impact of TSC on health, quality of life (QoL), and psychosocial well-being of individuals with TSC and their families. Questionnaires with disease-specific questions on burden of illness (BOI) and validated QoL questionnaires were used. After completion of additional informed consent, we included 143 individuals who participated in the TOSCA (TuberOus SClerosis registry to increase disease Awareness) study. Our results highlighted the substantial burden of TSC on the personal lives of individuals with TSC and their families. Nearly half of the patients experienced negative progress in their education or career due to TSC (42.1%), as well as many of their caregivers (17.6% employed; 58.8% unemployed). Most caregivers (76.5%) indicated that TSC affected family life, and social and working relationships. Further, well-coordinated care was lacking: a smooth transition from pediatric to adult care was mentioned by only 36.8% of adult patients, and financial, social, and psychological support in 21.1, 0, and 7.9%, respectively. In addition, the moderate rates of pain/discomfort (35%) and anxiety/depression (43.4%) reported across all ages and levels of disease demonstrate the high BOI and low QoL in this vulnerable population.
