The capacitated dispersion problem is a variant of the maximum diversity problem in which a set of elements in a network must be determined. These elements might represent, for instance, facilities ...in a logistics network or transmission devices in a telecommunication network. Usually, it is considered that each element is limited in its servicing capacity. Hence, given a set of possible locations, the capacitated dispersion problem consists of selecting a subset that maximizes the minimum distance between any pair of elements while reaching an aggregated servicing capacity. Since this servicing capacity is a highly usual constraint in real-world problems, the capacitated dispersion problem is often a more realistic approach than is the traditional maximum diversity problem. Given that the capacitated dispersion problem is an NP-hard problem, whenever large-sized instances are considered, we need to use heuristic-based algorithms to obtain high-quality solutions in reasonable computational times. Accordingly, this work proposes a multi-start biased-randomized algorithm to efficiently solve the capacitated dispersion problem. A series of computational experiments is conducted employing small-, medium-, and large-sized instances. Our results are compared with the best-known solutions reported in the literature, some of which have been proven to be optimal. Our proposed approach is proven to be highly competitive, as it achieves either optimal or near-optimal solutions and outperforms the non-optimal best-known solutions in many cases. Finally, a sensitive analysis considering different levels of the minimum aggregate capacity is performed as well to complete our study.
Stochastic, as well as fuzzy uncertainty, can be found in most real-world systems. Considering both types of uncertainties simultaneously makes optimization problems incredibly challenging. In this ...paper, we analyze the permutation flow shop problem (PFSP) with both stochastic and fuzzy processing times. The main goal is to find the solution (permutation of jobs) that minimizes the expected makespan. However, due to the existence of uncertainty, other characteristics of the solution are also taken into account. In particular, we illustrate how survival analysis can be employed to enrich the probabilistic information given to decision-makers. To solve the aforementioned optimization problem, we extend the concept of a simheuristic framework so it can also include fuzzy elements. Hence, both stochastic and fuzzy uncertainty are simultaneously incorporated in the PFSP. In order to test our approach, classical PFSP instances have been adapted and extended, so that processing times become either stochastic or fuzzy. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach when compared with more traditional ones.
Nowadays, several alternatives to internal combustion engines are being proposed in order to reduce CO2 emissions in freight transportation and citizen mobility. According to many experts, the use of ...electric vehicles constitutes one of the most promising alternatives for achieving the desirable reductions in emissions. However, popularization of these vehicles is being slowed by long recharging times and the low availability of recharging stations. One possible solution to this issue is to employ the concept of battery sharing or battery swapping. This concept is supported by important industrial partners, such as Eni in Italy, Ample in the US, and Shell in the UK. This paper supports the introduction of battery swapping practices by analyzing their effects. A discrete-event simulation model is employed for this study. The obtained results show that battery sharing practices are not just a more environmentally and socially friendly solution, but also one that can be highly beneficial for reducing traffic congestion.
In the classical team orienteering problem (TOP), a fixed fleet of vehicles is employed, each of them with a limited driving range. The manager has to decide about the subset of customers to visit, ...as well as the visiting order (routes). Each customer offers a different reward, which is gathered the first time that it is visited. The goal is then to maximize the total reward collected without exceeding the driving range constraint. This paper analyzes a more realistic version of the TOP in which the driving range limitation is considered as a soft constraint: every time that this range is exceeded, a penalty cost is triggered. This cost is modeled as a piece-wise function, which depends on factors such as the distance of the vehicle to the destination depot. As a result, the traditional reward-maximization objective becomes a non-smooth function. In addition, a second objective, regarding the design of balanced routing plans, is considered as well. A mathematical model for this non-smooth and bi-objective TOP is provided, and a biased-randomized algorithm is proposed as a solving approach.
In the context of logistics and transportation, this paper discusses how simheuristics can be extended by adding a fuzzy layer that allows us to deal with complex optimization problems with both ...stochastic and fuzzy uncertainty. This hybrid approach combines simulation, metaheuristics, and fuzzy logic to generate near-optimal solutions to large scale NP-hard problems that typically arise in many transportation activities, including the vehicle routing problem, the arc routing problem, or the team orienteering problem. The methodology allows us to model different components–such as travel times, service times, or customers’ demands–as deterministic, stochastic, or fuzzy. A series of computational experiments contribute to validate our hybrid approach, which can also be extended to other optimization problems in areas such as manufacturing and production, smart cities, telecommunication networks, etc.
This paper discusses an orienteering optimization problem where a vehicle using electric batteries must travel from an origin depot to a destination depot while maximizing the total reward collected ...along its route. The vehicle must cross several consecutive regions, with each region containing different types of charging nodes. A charging node has to be selected in each region, and the reward for visiting each node—in terms of a ‘satisfactory’ charging process—is a binary random variable that depends upon dynamic factors such as the type of charging node, weather conditions, congestion, battery status, etc. To learn how to efficiently operate in this dynamic environment, a hybrid methodology combining simulation with reinforcement learning is proposed. The reinforcement learning component is able to make informed decisions at each stage, while the simulation component is employed to validate the learning process. The computational experiments show how the proposed methodology is capable of design routing plans that are significantly better than non-informed decisions, thus allowing for an efficient management of the vehicle’s battery under such dynamic conditions.
The location routing problem integrates both a facility location and a vehicle routing problem. Each of these problems are NP-hard in nature, which justifies the use of heuristic-based algorithms ...when dealing with large-scale instances that need to be solved in reasonable computing times. This paper discusses a realistic variant of the problem that considers facilities of different sizes and two types of uncertainty conditions. In particular, we assume that some customers’ demands are stochastic, while others follow a fuzzy pattern. An iterated local search metaheuristic is integrated with simulation and fuzzy logic to solve the aforementioned problem, and a series of computational experiments are run to illustrate the potential of the proposed algorithm.
Advances in information and communication technologies have made possible the emergence of new shopping channels. The so-called ‘omnichannel’ retailing mode allows customers to shop for products ...online and receive them at home. This paper focuses on the omnichannel delivery concept for the retailing industry, which addresses the replenishment of a set of retail stores and the direct shipment of the products to customers within an integrated vehicle routing formulation. Due to its NP-Hardness, a constructive heuristic, which is extended into a biased-randomized heuristic and which is embedded into a multi-start procedure, is introduced for solving the large-sized instances of the problem. Next, the problem is enriched by considering a more realistic scenario in which travel times are modeled as random variables. For dealing with the stochastic version of the problem, a simheuristic algorithm is proposed. A series of computational experiments contribute to illustrate how our simheuristic can provide reliable and low-cost solutions under uncertain conditions.
In the team orienteering problem, a fixed fleet of vehicles departs from an origin depot towards a destination, and each vehicle has to visit nodes along its route in order to collect rewards. ...Typically, the maximum distance that each vehicle can cover is limited. Alternatively, there is a threshold for the maximum time a vehicle can employ before reaching its destination. Due to this driving range constraint, not all potential nodes offering rewards can be visited. Hence, the typical goal is to maximize the total reward collected without exceeding the vehicle’s capacity. The TOP can be used to model operations related to fleets of unmanned aerial vehicles, road electric vehicles with limited driving range, or ride-sharing operations in which the vehicle has to reach its destination on or before a certain deadline. However, in some realistic scenarios, travel times are better modeled as random variables, which introduce additional challenges into the problem. This paper analyzes a stochastic version of the team orienteering problem in which random delays are considered. Being a stochastic environment, we are interested in generating solutions with a high expected reward that, at the same time, are highly reliable (i.e., offer a high probability of not suffering any route delay larger than a user-defined threshold). In order to tackle this stochastic optimization problem, which contains a probabilistic constraint on the random delays, we propose an extended simheuristic algorithm that also employs concepts from reliability analysis.
This study aimed to validate dermatologic ultrasound as a complementary teledermatologic imaging modality in primary and tertiary care centers.
Six primary care centers and 1 tertiary care ...dermatology department collaborated in the program. Images were sent through the institutional teledermatologic platform to the tertiary care dermatology department. At the reference hospital, ultrasound images and clinical data were received and registered by a physician trained in dermatologic ultrasound. An in-person consultation was scheduled to confirm the teleultrasound diagnosis. The time of response by the tertiary center, quality and size of the teledermatologic image, and concordance with the in-person diagnosis were assessed for each dermatologic lesion.
A total of 147 teleultrasound consultations with 143 patients (93 women and 50 men; mean age ± SD, 47 ± 23 years) were evaluated between June 2018 and January 2019. Nine teleultrasound consultations (6.1%) were not valid. Discordance between teleultrasound and the in-person diagnosis was evident in 6 of 138 cases (4.3%). Most cases corresponded to benign skin tumors (66.7%), followed by inflammatory skin lesions (15.9%), nonmelanoma skin lesions (13%), and other skin lesions (4.3%). All malignant tumors were detected (sensitivity, 100%), although 2 cases of benign lesions were telediagnosed as malignant (specificity, 97.8%). The positive and negative predictive values of a teleultrasound diagnosis of cutaneous malignancy were 90% and 100%, respectively.
Asynchronous primary care teleultrasound combined with dermatologic ultrasound training at tertiary centers is an effective teledermatologic modality.
