The existence of a new force beyond the Standard Model is compelling because it could explain several striking astrophysical observations which fail standard interpretations. We searched for the ...light vector mediator of this dark force, the U boson, with the KLOE detector at the DAΦNE e+e− collider. Using an integrated luminosity of 1.54 fb−1, we studied the process e+e−→Uγ, with U→e+e−, using radiative return to search for a resonant peak in the dielectron invariant-mass distribution. We did not find evidence for a signal, and set a 90% CL upper limit on the mixing strength between the Standard Model photon and the dark photon, ε2, at 10−6–10−4 in the 5–520 MeV/c2 mass range.
New precise unpolarised differential cross sections of deuteron–proton elastic scattering have been measured at 16 different deuteron beam momenta between pd=3120.17MeV/c and pd=3204.16MeV/c at the ...COoler SYnchrotron COSY of the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The data, which were taken using the magnetic spectrometer ANKE, cover the equivalent range in proton kinetic energies from Tp=882.2MeV to Tp=918.3MeV. The experimental results are analysed theoretically using the Glauber diffraction model with accurate nucleon–nucleon input. The theoretical cross section at Tp=900MeV agrees very well with the experimental one at low momentum transfers t. There are, however, significant deviations for |t|>0.2(GeV/c)2 that must be investigated further.
The proton analysing power in p→p elastic scattering has been measured at small angles at COSY-ANKE at 796 MeV and five other beam energies between 1.6 and 2.4 GeV using a polarised proton beam. The ...asymmetries obtained by detecting the fast proton in the ANKE forward detector or the slow recoil proton in a silicon tracking telescope are completely consistent. Although the analysing power results agree well with the many published data at 796 MeV, and also with the most recent partial wave solution at this energy, the ANKE data at the higher energies lie well above the predictions of this solution at small angles. An updated phase shift analysis that uses the ANKE results together with the World data leads to a much better description of these new measurements.
Values of the proton analysing power in the pd→He3π0/H3π+ reactions at 350–360 MeV per nucleon were obtained by using a polarised proton beam incident on a deuterium cluster-jet target and with a ...polarised deuteron beam incident on a target cell filled with polarised hydrogen. These results have a much larger angular coverage than existing data. First measurements are also presented of the deuteron vector analysing power and the deuteron–proton spin correlations. Data were also obtained on the deuteron–proton spin correlation and proton analysing power at small angles at 600 MeV per nucleon, though the angular coverage at this energy was much more restricted even when using a deuteron beam. By combining the extrapolated values of the spin correlations to the forward or backward directions with published measurements of the deuteron tensor analysing powers, the relative phases between the two non-vanishing amplitudes were evaluated.
The paper describes the commissioning of the experimental equipment and the machine studies required for the first spin-filtering experiment with protons at a beam kinetic energy of 49.3 MeV in COSY. ...The implementation of a low-β insertion made it possible to achieve beam lifetimes of τb=8000s in the presence of a dense polarized hydrogen storage-cell target of areal density dt=(5.5±0.2)×1013atoms/cm2 . The developed techniques can be directly applied to antiproton machines and allow the determination of the spin-dependent p¯p cross sections via spin filtering.
In order to measure the mass of the η meson with high accuracy using the dp→He3η reaction, the momentum of the circulating deuteron beam in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY of the Forschungszentrum Jülich ...has to be determined with unprecedented precision. This has been achieved by studying the spin dynamics of the polarized deuteron beam. By depolarizing the beam through the use of an artificially induced spin resonance, it was possible to evaluate its momentum p with a precision of Δp/p<10−4 for a momentum of roughly 3GeV/c . Different possible sources of error in the application of the spin-resonance method are discussed in detail and its possible use during a standard experiment is considered.
We have measured the running of the effective QED coupling constant α(s) in the time-like region 0.6<s<0.975 GeV with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE using the Initial-State Radiation process e+e−→μ+μ−γ. ...It represents the first measurement of the running of α(s) in this energy region. Our results show a more than 5σ significance of the hadronic contribution to the running of α(s), which is the strongest direct evidence both in time- and space-like regions achieved in a single measurement. By using the e+e−→π+π− cross section measured by KLOE, the real and imaginary parts of the shift Δα(s) have been extracted. From a fit of the real part of Δα(s) and assuming the lepton universality the branching ratio BR(ω→μ+μ−)=(6.6±1.4stat±1.7syst)⋅10−5 has been determined.
The vector (Ayd) and tensor (Axx and Ayy) analysing powers in deuteron–proton elastic scattering have been measured in the forward hemisphere at deuteron kinetic energies of Td=1.2 GeV and 2.27 GeV ...using the ANKE spectrometer at the COSY storage ring. The results are compared with other experimental data and with predictions made within the framework of Glauber multiple scattering theory.
