Current studies evidence the role of miRNAs in extracellular vesicles (EVs) as key regulators of pathological processes, including neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. As EVs can cross the ...blood-brain barrier, and EV miRNAs are very stable in peripheral circulation, we evaluated the potential gender differences in inflammatory-regulated miRNAs levels in human and murine plasma EVs derived from alcohol-intoxicated female and male adolescents, and whether these miRNAs could be used as biomarkers of neuroinflammation. We demonstrated that while alcohol intoxication lowers anti-inflammatory miRNA (mir-146a-5p, mir-21-5p, mir-182-5p) levels in plasma EVs from human and mice female adolescents, these EV miRNAs increased in males. In mice brain cortices, ethanol treatment lowers mir-146a-5p and mir-21-5p levels, while triggering a higher expression of inflammatory target genes (Traf6, Stat3, and Camk2a) in adolescent female mice. These results indicate, for the first time, that female and male adolescents differ as regards the ethanol effects associated with the inflammatory-related plasma miRNAs EVs profile, and suggest that female adolescents are more vulnerable than males to the inflammatory effects of binge alcohol drinking. These findings also support the view that circulating miRNAs in EVs could be useful biomarkers for screening ethanol-induced neuroinflammation and brain damage in adolescence.
The first part of this dossier reflected on the dynamics of shame and pride as the articulating axis of the LGTB universe in the Spanish context. This second part takes up that axis of analysis but ...focuses on four Latin American countries: Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Argentina. The life stories, autobiographies, poems, letters and press material studied in the different articles confirm the hypothesis that pride is not the dominant experience from the 1970s onwards, nor does shame rule homogeneously in the preceding period. There is, however, a specificity to Latin America -beyond its logical diversity-in the way in which shame and pride are configured among dissident subjects due to the political and socioeconomic circumstances specific to the region. Thus, shame is not only linked to gender and sexuality, but also to social class, race or socio-economic status, while pride also assumes very heterogeneous forms, not always of a public nature, due to the pressure of authoritarian regimes or more conservative societies as a result of machismo and the determining influence of the Catholic religion.
The majority of therapeutic strategies for mycosis require the protracted administration of antifungals, which can result in significant toxicities and have unacceptable failure rates. Hence, there ...is an urgent need for the development of improved therapeutic approaches, and monoclonal antibody-based drugs are potentially a powerful alternative to standard antifungals. To develop a broad antibody-like reagent against mycosis, wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) was linked to the effector Fc region of murine IgG2a. The resultant WGA-Fc displayed high affinity to purified chitin and bound efficiently to fungal cell walls, co-localizing with chitin, in patterns ranging from circular (Histoplasma capsulatum) to punctate (Cryptococcus neoformans) to labeling at the bud sites (Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae). WGA-Fc directly inhibited fungal growth in standard cultures. WGA-Fc opsonization increased fungal phagocytosis, as well augmented the antifungal functions by macrophages. Prophylactic administration of WGA-Fc fully protected mice against H. capsulatum, correlating with a reduction in lung, spleen and liver fungal burdens. Administration of WGA-Fc also dramatically diminished pulmonary inflammation. Hence, the opsonic activity of WGA-Fc effectively modulates fungal cell recognition and promotes the elimination of fungal pathogens. Therefore, we propose WGA-Fc as a potential "pan-fungal" therapeutic that should be further developed for use against invasive mycoses.

In fact, the vindication and diffusion of marginal voices within the Argentine literary field –such as Sara Gallardo or Elvira Orpheé– or his anthology of homoerotic short stories Historia de un deseo (2000), can be read as critical gestures that place Brizuela into a feminist field. This article proposes a go through his critical interventions with the aim of highlighting the contribution to reading modes that destabilize, or directly challenge, certain assumptions of Argentine literary criticism between the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st.
Over the last decade, studies on masculinities have become a growing field of scholarship in Argentina. This paper provides a preliminary state of the art and critical account of the latest research ...on the topic. We emphasize the relation of these studies with others on sexual diversity, identifying important ongoing debates and alerting about vacant areas of inquiry. Focusing on an assessment of both fields’ most important contributions, the paper deals with two major sets of disciplines: history, sociology and anthropology on one hand, and literary, cinematographic and cultural studies on the other.
Objetivo. Evaluar la calidad higiénico-sanitaria, fisicoquímica y microbiológica de leche cruda bovina destinada a la venta, producida en un establo familiar y en tres mercados públicos del estado de ...Tabasco. Materiales y métodos. La calidad higiénico-sanitaria se determinó de acuerdo con la información general del predio, instalaciones, proceso de ordeño, limpieza y desinfección. La calidad fisicoquímica se determinó evaluando proteínas totales, caseína, grasa butírica, lactosa, sólidos no grasos y densidad. La calidad microbiológica fue determinada mediante la acidez titulable, prueba de alcohol, contenido de células somáticas, potencial de óxido-reducción, materia extraña, inhibidores bacterianos y bacterias mesofílicas aerobias. Resultados. La leche producida en el establo familiar, fue evaluada con la máxima calidad fisicoquímica y microbiológica en referencia a los estándares que evalúa la normatividad oficial mexicana establecidas en México por el Consejo para el fomento de la calidad de la leche y sus derivados, A. C. En cambio, la leche en los tres mercados públicos se consideró de rechazo, indicando posible contaminación durante los procesos de ordeña, así como en el manejo y transporte hacia los mercados públicos. Conclusiones. Las muestras de leche provenientes de los mercados públicos se consideraron no aptas para consumo humano ni para elaboración de subproductos.
Forage legumes such as Leucaena leucocephala, besides being a rich source of protein for animal feed, its inclusion in silvopastoral systems provides fundamental components to improve soil ...properties. These plants have the ability to establish symbiotic association with the genus Rhizobium sp. and fix biologically atmospheric nitrogen favoring growth and development, being reflected in production increases. The objective of this research was to evaluate the capacity of native isolates of Rhizobium sp. and a commercial strain in biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in L. leucocephala plants. Two separate bioassays to evaluate the efficiency of the FBN of the native isolates and the commercial strain under greenhouse conditions, followed by a randomized complete block design with 7 x 2 factorial arrangement, seven treatments, two factors: native isolates and commercial strains and bacterial concentrations (106 and 108 cells.ml-1), with three repetitions and five experimental units. The first bioassay was carried out with seeds, determining the percentage of germination, the length and thickness of the stem, number of leaves, dry weight of the aerial part, number of nodule/plant and the percentage of nitrogen accumulated in the area part of the plant. In the second bioassay with 30-day-old seedlings, the same variables of the first bioassay were determined, with the exception of the percentage of germination. In the first bioassay, a greater stimulation was found in the germination of L. leucocephala seeds at a concentration of 108 cells.mL-1. Regarding stem length and thickness, accumulated dry matter, leaf development and nitrogen accumulation, better results were found in the treatments with the native isolates L27, L36 and L38 in a concentration of 106 cells.mL-1 above the commercial strain in concentration of 108 cells.mL-1. The native isolates of Rhizobium sp. exert a positive effect on the FBN and the germination of plants of L. leucocephala, which will allow to conduct future field studies that allow to potentiate the culture of L. leucocephala and silvopastoral systems for bovine feeding.
