Cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) are a common tool for probing effective connectivity in intracranial human electrophysiology. As with all human electrophysiology data, CCEP data are highly ...susceptible to noise. To address noise, filters and re-referencing are often applied to CCEP data, but different processing strategies are used from study to study.
We systematically compare how common average re-referencing and filtering CCEP data impacts quantification.
We show that common average re-referencing and filters, particularly filters that cut out more frequencies, can significantly impact the quantification of CCEP magnitude and morphology. We identify that high cutoff high pass filters (> 0.5 Hz), low cutoff low pass filters (< 200 Hz), and common average re-referencing impact quantification across subjects. However, we also demonstrate that the presence of noise may impact CCEP quantification, and preprocessing is necessary to mitigate this. We show that filtering is more effective than re-referencing or averaging across trials for reducing most common types of noise.
These results suggest that existing CCEP processing methods must be applied with care to maximize noise reduction and minimize changes to the data. We do not test every available processing strategy; rather we demonstrate that processing can influence the results of CCEP studies. We emphasize the importance of reporting all processing methods, particularly re-referencing methods.
We propose a general framework for choosing an appropriate processing pipeline for CCEP data, taking into consideration the noise levels of a specific dataset. We suggest that minimal gentle filtering is preferable.

Precision cosmology with Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) makes use of the fact that SN Ia luminosities depend on their light-curve shapes and colours. Using Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) and other data, ...we show that there is an additional dependence on the global characteristics of their host galaxies: events of the same light-curve shape and colour are, on average, 0.08 mag (≃4.0σ) brighter in massive host galaxies (presumably metal-rich) and galaxies with low specific star formation rates (sSFR). These trends do not depend on any assumed cosmological model, and are independent of the SN light-curve width: both fast and slow-declining events show the same trends. SNe Ia in galaxies with a low sSFR also have a smaller slope (‘β’) between their luminosities and colours with ∼2.7σ significance, and a smaller scatter on SN Ia Hubble diagrams (at 95 per cent confidence), though the significance of these effects is dependent on the reddest SNe. SN Ia colours are similar between low-mass and high-mass hosts, leading us to interpret their luminosity differences as an intrinsic property of the SNe and not of some external factor such as dust. If the host stellar mass is interpreted as a metallicity indicator using galaxy mass–metallicity relations, the luminosity trends are in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. We show that the average stellar mass, and therefore the average metallicity, of our SN Ia host galaxies decreases with redshift. The SN Ia luminosity differences consequently introduce a systematic error in cosmological analyses, comparable to the current statistical uncertainties on parameters such as w, the equation of state of dark energy. We show that the use of two SN Ia absolute magnitudes, one for events in high-mass (metal-rich) galaxies and the other for events in low-mass (metal-poor) galaxies, adequately corrects for the differences. Cosmological fits incorporating these terms give a significant reduction in χ2 (3.8σ–4.5σ); linear corrections based on host parameters do not perform as well. We conclude that all future SN Ia cosmological analyses should use a correction of this (or similar) form to control demographic shifts in the underlying galaxy population.
We present observational constraints on the nature of dark energy using the Supernova Legacy Survey three-year sample (SNLS3) of Guy et al. and Conley et al. We use the 472 Type Ia supernovae (SNe ...Ia) in this sample, accounting for recently discovered correlations between SN Ia luminosity and host galaxy properties, and include the effects of all identified systematic uncertainties directly in the cosmological fits. Combining the SNLS3 data with the full WMAP7 power spectrum, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey luminous red galaxy power spectrum, and a prior on the Hubble constant H 0 from SHOES, in a flat universe we find Delta *W m = 0.269 ? 0.015 and w = --1.061+0.069 -- 0.068 (where the uncertainties include all statistical and SN Ia systematic errors)--a 6.5% measure of the dark energy equation-of-state parameter w. The statistical and systematic uncertainties are approximately equal, with the systematic uncertainties dominated by the photometric calibration of the SN Ia fluxes--without these calibration effects, systematics contribute only a ~2% error in w. When relaxing the assumption of flatness, we find Delta *W m = 0.271 ? 0.015, Delta *W k = --0.002 ? 0.006, and w = --1.069+0.091 -- 0.092. Parameterizing the time evolution of w as w(a) = w 0 + wa (1 -- a) gives w 0 = --0.905 ? 0.196, wa = --0.984+1.094 -- 1.097 in a flat universe. All of our results are consistent with a flat, w = --1 universe. The size of the SNLS3 sample allows various tests to be performed with the SNe segregated according to their light curve and host galaxy properties. We find that the cosmological constraints derived from these different subsamples are consistent. There is evidence that the coefficient, Delta *b, relating SN Ia luminosity and color, varies with host parameters at >4 Delta *s significance (in addition to the known SN luminosity-host relation); however, this has only a small effect on the cosmological results and is currently a subdominant systematic.
Parkinson disease (PD) is a progressive neurologic condition that causes motor and nonmotor manifestations. Treatment provides symptomatic benefit but no current treatment has been proven to slow ...disease progression. Research studies of PD require a means of rating the severity of disease by measurement of motor manifestations, assessment of ability to perform daily functional activities, and symptomatic response to medication. The most common rating scales are the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Hoehn and Yahr staging, and the Schwab and England rating of activities of daily living. Each of these rating scales are described, including detailed instructions on how to implement these ratings. Although these are the most widely applied rating scales of PD, there are still substantial limitations to these scales that must be considered when using them for research. Finally, some common applications of these scales are described.
ABSTRACT
The Supernova Cosmology Project has conducted the ‘See Change’ programme, aimed at discovering and observing high-redshift (1.13 ≤ z ≤ 1.75) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). We used multifilter ...Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of massive galaxy clusters with sufficient cadence to make the observed SN Ia light curves suitable for a cosmological probe of dark energy at z > 0.5. This See Change sample of SNe Ia with multi-colour light curves will be the largest to date at these redshifts. As part of the See Change programme, we obtained ground-based spectroscopy of each discovered transient and/or its host galaxy. Here, we present Very Large Telescope (VLT) spectra of See Change transient host galaxies, deriving their redshifts, and host parameters such as stellar mass and star formation rate. Of the 39 See Change transients/hosts that were observed with the VLT, we successfully determined the redshift for 26, including 15 SNe Ia at z > 0.97. We show that even in passive environments, it is possible to recover secure redshifts for the majority of SN hosts out to z = 1.5. We find that with typical exposure times of 3−4 h on an 8-m-class telescope we can recover ∼75 per cent of SN Ia redshifts in the range of 0.97 < z < 1.5. Furthermore, we show that the combination of HST photometry and VLT spectroscopy is able to provide estimates of host galaxy stellar mass that are sufficiently accurate for use in a mass-step correction in the cosmological analysis.

We compared diffusion values of the nigrostriatal tract to PET and histological ...results in non-human primates (NHPs) with varying degrees of unilateral nigrostriatal injury induced by MPTP, a toxin selective for dopaminergic neurons.
Sixteen NHPs had MRI and PET scans of three different presynaptic radioligands and blinded video-based motor ratings before and after unilateral carotid artery infusion of variable doses of MPTP. Diffusion measures of connections between midbrain and striatum were calculated. Then animals were euthanized to quantify striatal dopamine concentration, stereologic measures of striatal tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunostained fiber density and unbiased stereologic counts of TH stained nigral cells.
Diffusion measures correlated with MPTP dose, nigral TH-positive cell bodies and striatal TH-positive fiber density but did not correlate with in vitro nigrostriatal terminal field measures or in vivo PET measures of striatal uptake of presynaptic markers. Once nigral TH cell count loss exceeded 50% the stereologic terminal field measures reached a near zero floor effect but the diffusion measures continued to correlate with nigral cell counts.
Diffusion measures in the nigrostriatal tract correlate with nigral dopamine neurons and striatal fiber density, but have the same relationship to terminal field measures as a previous report of striatal PET measures of presynaptic neurons. These diffusion measures have the potential to act as non-invasive index of the severity of nigrostriatal injury. Diffusion imaging of the nigrostriatal tract could potentially have diagnostic value in humans with Parkinson disease or related disorders.
OBJECTIVE:The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between disruption of MRI-measured resting-state functional connectivity (rs-fcMRI) brain networks and CSF levels of ...potentially pathogenic proteins that reflect brain pathology in Parkinson disease (PD).
METHODS:PD participants without dementia (n = 43) and age-matched controls (n = 22) had lumbar punctures to measure CSF protein levels, Pittsburgh compound B (PiB)–PET imaging, and rs-fcMRI while off medication. Imaging analyses focused on 5 major resting-state networks as well as the striatum.
RESULTS:Participants with PD had significantly reduced sensorimotor functional connectivity, which correlated with reduced CSF levels of α-synuclein. The PD group also had significantly stronger default mode network functional connectivity that did not correlate with CSF β-amyloid (Aβ)42 or PiB uptake. In contrast, default mode network functional connectivity in the control group did correlate with CSF Aβ42 levels. Functional connectivity was similar between groups in the dorsal attention, control, and salience networks.
CONCLUSION:These results suggest that abnormal α-synuclein accumulation, but not Aβ, contributes to the disruption of motor-related functional connectivity in PD. Furthermore, correlating CSF protein measures with the strength of resting-state networks provides a direct link between abnormal α-synuclein metabolism and disrupted brain function in PD.
Aims. We present photometric properties and distance measurements of 252high redshift Type Ia supernovae (0.15 < z < 1.1) discovered during the first three years of the Supernova Legacy Survey ...(SNLS). These events were detected and their multi-colour light curves measured using the MegaPrime/MegaCam instrument at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), by repeatedly imaging four one-square degree fields in four bands. Follow-up spectroscopy was performed at the VLT, Gemini and Keck telescopes to confirm the nature of the supernovae and to measure their redshifts. Methods. Systematic uncertainties arising from light curve modeling are studied, making use of two techniques to derive the peak magnitude, shape and colour of the supernovae, and taking advantage of a precise calibration of the SNLS fields. Results. A flat ΛCDM cosmological fit to 231SNLS high redshift type Ia supernovae alone gives ΩM = 0.211 ± 0.034(stat) ± 0.069(sys). The dominant systematic uncertainty comes from uncertainties in the photometric calibration. Systematic uncertainties from light curve fitters come next with a total contribution of ± 0.026 on ΩM. No clear evidence is found for a possible evolution of the slope (β) of the colour-luminosity relation with redshift.
We present 32 epochs of optical (3300−9700 Å) spectrophotometric observations of the nearby quintessential “normal” type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 2011fe in the galaxy M101, extending from −15 to +97 d ...with respect to B-band maximum, obtained by the Nearby Supernova Factory collaboration. SN 2011fe is the closest (μ = 29.04) and brightest (Bmax = 9.94 mag) SN Ia observed since the advent of modern large scale programs for the intensive periodic followup of supernovae. Both synthetic light curve measurements and spectral feature analysis attest to the normality of SN 2011fe. There is very little evidence for reddening in its host galaxy. The homogeneous calibration, intensive time sampling, and high signal-to-noise ratio of the data set make it unique. Thus it is ideal for studying the physics of SN Ia explosions in detail, and for furthering the use of SNe Ia as standardizable candles for cosmology. Several such applications are shown, from the creation of a bolometric light curve and measurement of the 56Ni mass, to the simulation ofdetection thresholds for unburned carbon, direct comparisons with other SNe Ia, and existing spectral templates.
To estimate the prevalence of parkinsonism in welders in Alabama and to compare this prevalence with that in a general population sample.
The authors screened 1,423 welders from Alabama who were ...referred for medical-legal evaluation for Parkinson disease (PD). Standardized videotaped assessments using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor subsection 3 (UPDRS3) were obtained. Patients provided information regarding exposure to welding fumes and job titles. Job titles were matched with Department of Labor Standard Occupational Codes (SOCs). Diagnoses were assigned based on quantitative criteria for the diagnosis of PD using two thresholds for diagnosis. With use of the number of active welders in this screening with parkinsonism as the numerator and the age-adjusted number of welders in each SOC as the denominator, the prevalence of parkinsonism in Alabama welders was estimated using conservative assumptions and compared with general population data from Copiah County, MS.
With use of conservative and liberal case definitions of parkinsonism, the estimated prevalence of parkinsonism among active male welders age 40 to 69 statewide was 977 to 1,336 cases/100,000 population. The prevalence of parkinsonism was higher among welders vs age-standardized data for the general population (prevalence ratio = 10.19, 95% CI 4.43 to 23.43).
