Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) dates back to the beginning of biologic psychiatry. Particularly, the introduction of general anesthesia and muscle relaxation as well as recent advances ...in ECT technique greatly reduced the incidence of complications related with ECT and post- interventional adverse cognitive effects. Today, ECT is still the most effective acute antidepressant treatment. In most countries ECT is used for the treatment of severe depression that failed to respond to psychopharmacotherapy and other therapy. Because ECT provides a fast response, it is specially recommended for lifethreatening illness conditions including agitation, stupor, food restriction or high suicide risk. Conclusions: Within the profession up-todate ECT is considered safe, effective and rapid working treatment for the severest forms of mental disorders. On the contrary, ECT is not performed in Slovenia. No professional reason exists that ECT would not be available in Slovenia. By Slovenian Mental Health Act ECT is considered as a special treatment option for mental disorders, but momentarily different barriers limit the availability of ECT to Slovenian patients, particularly to patients in acute illness conditions.

Background Delirium is defined as an impairment of counsciousness and cognitive functions and is a common cause of disturbed behaviour in many patients with different somatic diseases and mental ...disorders. Most at risk are elderly, postoperative patients, critically ill patients and those with cancer in advanced stages. In psychiatric intensive care units patients with alcohol and sedative withdrawal related delirium are more often treated. Although delirium is a negative prognostic indicator leading to higher morbidity and mortality of patients, it often goes undetected and poorly managed. Conclusions Most recommendations for management of delirium are based on the nonpharmacological supportive care and prevention of delirium. It is also necessary to identify and treat the underlying causes. Antipsychotics are the mainstay of symptomatic pharmacological treatment and have been shown to be effective in treating symptoms of both hyperactive and hypoactive delirium. Although efficacy rates between typical and atypical antipsychotic agents are similar, the later are associated with fewer extrapyramidal side effects. Benzodiazepines are usually preferred for withdrawal delirium or as an alternative or adjuvant to antipsychotics when these are ineffective or cause unacceptable side effects.
α-MnO
nanorods were synthesized via the hydrothermal decomposition of KMnO
in an acidic environment in the presence of Co
and Cr
ions. Reactions were carried out at three different temperatures: 90, ...130 and 170 °C. All prepared samples exhibit a tetragonal MnO
crystalline phase. SEM-EDS analysis shows that cobalt cations are incorporated to a higher degree into the MnO
framework than chromium ions, and that the content of the dopant ions decreases with increasing reaction temperature. The oxidation of Co
to Co
during the reaction was proved by an XANES study, while EXAFS results confirm that both dopant ions substitute Mn
in the center of an octahedron. The K/Mn ratio in the doped samples synthesized at 170 °C is significantly lower than in the undoped samples. Analysis of an individual cobalt-doped α-MnO
nanorod with HAADF-STEM reveals that the distribution of cobalt through the cross-section of the nanorod is uniform. The course of thermal decomposition of the doped nanorods is similar to that of the undoped ones. Dopant ions do not preserve the MnO
phase at higher temperatures nor do they destabilize the cryptomelane structure.
This paper analyses the possible reduction in costs achievable as a result of the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into vine growing and wine technology. A comparison is made ...between production using two different genetically modified organisms (vine resistant to Grape Fan Leaf Virus and polysaccharide-degrading wine yeast) which were, at the time of the research, two of the most promising genetically modified organisms. The analysis is conducted on the basis of empirical cost estimations and real experimental data. The comparison was conducted at the level of viticulture and winemaking production unit. The results of the costs analysis indicates that at the moment genetically modified organisms in viticulture and winemaking are not very effective at reducing costs. Only in the case where infestation of Grape Fan Leaf Virus is very intensive, are better results obtained in the case of genetically modified vine. Legislation has a strong influence as compliance incurs additional costs (identity preservation, labelling) in the case of GMO technology.
