Translation theorists often mistakenly assume that good translations are always into the translator's native language. The fairly recent historical mystification of the native speaker - the belief ...that only a mother tongue can be truly mastered - is re-examined. Because of the subjectivity in such notions as "native speaker," "mother tongue," & "bilingual," translators easily avoid defining their relation to the target language. A long history of translation into non-mother tongues is sketched. The ideal translation situation is rare in actual practice, eg, in Bible translation (Nida, Eugene A., 1964). 40 References. E.
