A continuous comparison radiometer has been implemented at 97 GHz using quasi-optical techniques for local oscillator (LO) injection and realization of a 90 deg hybrid. Cryogenically cooled ...Schottky-diode mixers and FET amplifiers give a double-sideband (DSB) system temperature of 250 K. The system is self-calibrating and optimized under computer control. The root-mean-square (rms) fluctuations due to the receiver are less than 0.025 K with a 1-s integration time.

Abstract
We present new results from global VLBI observations of the highly active blazar OJ 287 at 7 and 3 mm wavelengths. We show the first map of the mas to sub-mas structure of OJ 287 at 43 GHz ...and discuss this image in the context with models of the source structure seen at 100 GHz.
Previous analyses of periodically coupled multimoded systems have assumed equal spacing of the coupling points. In this paper, explicit simple formulas are developed to account for randomized ...variations of a periodically coupled system. This analysis is useful in multimoded transmission systems utilizing circular waveguides or fiber optics and in active systems such as traveling wave tubes and surface acoustic wave devices.
The very-large-array (VLA) radio telescope utilizes a low-loss TE/sub 01/ circular waveguide transmission system. During the design of this system a coupler was developed which couples directly from ...a standard millimeter rectangular waveguide to the TE/sub 01/mode in highly over-moded circular waveguide. In contrast to previous couplers which used periodically spaced groups of coupling holes, this design wraps the rectangular waveguide in a helix around the circular waveguide to give a continuous array of coupling apertures for maximum coupling and a compact mechanical configuration. The helix angle is chosen to match the phase velocities of the rectangular and circular waveguide modes at a given frequency. In particular, couplers have been designed and fabricated which couple from WR-28 (26.540-GHz) and WR-22 (33-50-GHz) rectangular waveguides to the TE/sub 01/ mode in 20- and 60-mm-diam circular waveguide.
AzTEC is a mm-wavelength bolometric camera utilizing 144 silicon nitride micromesh detectors. Herein we describe the AzTEC instrument architecture and its use as an astronomical instrument. We report ...on several performance metrics measured during a three month observing campaign at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and conclude with our plans for AzTEC as a facility instrument on the Large Millimeter Telescope.
Intimates as Agents of Social Support Swann, William B; Predmore, Steven C

We proposed that people's intimates may insulate them against self-discrepant feedback. Individuals who possessed low or high self-esteem (
targets
) reported to the laboratory accompanied by persons ...with whom they were involved in intimate relationships (
intimates
). Some intimates perceived targets in a manner that was
congruent
with targets' self-conceptions; others perceived targets in a manner that was
incongruent
with targets' self-conceptions. Targets received bogus feedback that was discrepant with their self-esteem and interacted with either their intimate or a stranger. Targets then completed a measure of self-esteem. As expected, targets changed their self-ratings in the direction of the discrepant feedback when they interacted with either an incongruent intimate or a stranger but not when they interacted with a congruent intimate. Moreover, congruent intimates were just as effective in insulating low self-esteem targets against positive feedback as they were in insulating high self-esteem individuals against negative feedback. Finally, the more targets discussed the feedback, the less self-rating change they experienced. Implications for social support processes and attempts to cope with traumatic events are discussed.
