Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious chronic metabolic disease which disease afflicting at present now afflicts approximately 4% of world population worldwide. Nowadays, the need for more potent and ...safe drugs to supply the present anti-diabetic and treated drugs has become an imperative. Astragalus membranaceus, the most common Chinese herb and key-component of many Chinese herbal anti-diabetic formulas, is rich in anti-diabetic compounds: polysaccharides (APS), saponins (ASS), and flavonoids (ASF) etc. Because of its various biological activities, especially its antidiabetic properties, that continuously arouse different studies. Recent studies focused on type 1 and type 2 treatment, respectively caused by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells and insulin resistance and deficient glucose metabolism. Its total polysaccharides, saponins and flavonoids fractions and several isolated compounds have been the most studied. This paper discusses diabetic treatment and pharmacological action of the biological ingredients in relation to diabetes mellitus and diabetic complications.
We propose a new methodology for long-term biopotential recording based on an MEMS multisensor integrated platform featuring a commercial electrostatic charge-transfer sensor. This family of sensors ...was originally intended for presence tracking in the automotive industry, so the existing setup was engineered for the acquisition of electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, electrooculograms, and electromyography, designing a dedicated front-end and writing proper firmware for the specific application. Systematic tests on controls and nocturnal acquisitions from patients in a domestic environment will be discussed in detail. The excellent results indicate that this technology can provide a low-power, unexplored solution to biopotential acquisition. The technological breakthrough is in that it enables adding this type of functionality to existing MEMS boards at near-zero additional power consumption. For these reasons, it opens up additional possibilities for wearable sensors and strengthens the role of MEMS technology in medical wearables for the long-term synchronous acquisition of a wide range of signals.
There are various approaches to measure the complexity of engineered systems. The structural approach to the measurement of system complexity is only one of the possible routes that are currently ...under consideration. This approach considers the complexity of the internal structure of the system and the organization of its components, as a snapshot frozen in time.The most common approach to the definition of structural complexity metrics is through the concepts of entropy, algorithmic information content, and logical depth. Another approach looks at the set of the eigenvalues-the spectrum-of a graph representation of the system of interest. The most popular spectral structural complexity metrics are graph energy and natural connectivity. The authors in this article present a set of metrics that are created based on the existing metrics. The metrics assume that the graphs representing the system of interest are weighted with values representing the complexity of components and interfaces. The metrics are then explored through two sets of random graphs, representing the architecture of an engineered system.

Although most visits for skin disease are managed by primary care physicians, diagnosis and treatment of skin disease are often difficult for family doctors. In this article, two cases of ...occupational allergic contact dermatitis in ironers are presented. Both patients only developed their dermatitis when they came into contact with formaldehyde. Occupational dermatitis are very frequent with important social and economic implications: thus, they represent a therapeutic challenge non only for dermatologists, but also for family doctors.

Pet therapy is an innovative science that finds valid intervention strategies not only for treating psycho-physical diseases but also for improving the quality of life. The areas of intervention ...concern various fields: pedagogical, psychological, social and health care. Improving the welfare state of certain categories of people, including the elderly. The contact with the animal demonstrates not only positive influence on social and individual parameters, such as interaction and communication, but is also effective on behavioral parameters, reducing agitation, stimulating creativity, curiosity and observation capacity, And affectivity with improved depression and anxiety. In complementary therapies, pet therapy, either animal assisted activity (AAA) or animal assisted therapy (AAT), is able to modify the state of the present by providing some well-being in the elderly in treatment. A therapy that goes beyond From the severity of the patient's status but could also benefit in those cases of particular gravity as Alzhaimer's. The use of this therapy in elderly people who can record a physiological aging of their functions, such as dementia and Alzheimer's, also has a strong emotional, cognitive and relational stimulation, a recovery of autobiographical memory, an increase in sense of Self-esteem and self-efficacy, a push towards eagerness and social interaction. A therapeutic geriatric, which works mainly on emotions, modifies quantitatively the behavioral and cognitive changes of patients and, by integrating with traditional drugs, improves the state of well-being and quality of life.
This work presents an up-to-date model for the simulation of non-stationary ground motions, including several novelties compared to the original study of Sabetta and Pugliese (Bull Seism Soc Am ...86:337–352, 1996). The selection of the input motion in the framework of earthquake engineering has become progressively more important with the growing use of nonlinear dynamic analyses. Regardless of the increasing availability of large strong motion databases, ground motion records are not always available for a given earthquake scenario and site condition, requiring the adoption of simulated time series. Among the different techniques for the generation of ground motion records, we focused on the methods based on stochastic simulations, considering the time- frequency decomposition of the seismic ground motion. We updated the non-stationary stochastic model initially developed in Sabetta and Pugliese (Bull Seism Soc Am 86:337–352, 1996) and later modified by Pousse et al. (Bull Seism Soc Am 96:2103–2117, 2006) and Laurendeau et al. (Nonstationary stochastic simulation of strong ground-motion time histories: application to the Japanese database. 15 WCEE Lisbon, 2012). The model is based on the S-transform that implicitly considers both the amplitude and frequency modulation. The four model parameters required for the simulation are: Arias intensity, significant duration, central frequency, and frequency bandwidth. They were obtained from an empirical ground motion model calibrated using the accelerometric records included in the updated Italian strong-motion database ITACA. The simulated accelerograms show a good match with the ground motion model prediction of several amplitude and frequency measures, such as Arias intensity, peak acceleration, peak velocity, Fourier spectra, and response spectra.
Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi descrever as características do osso alveolar propriamente dito (OAPD) e sua resposta frente à cirurgia a retalho, pois há poucas informações científicas ...disponíveis na literatura a respeito das dimensões do OAPD. Métodos: Cinco cães foram incluídos no estudo. Em um dos lados da maxila (GT), uma incisão intrassulcular foi feita no sulco gengival da face vestibular do segundo e terceiro pré-molares, e um retalho total foi elevado, permitindo a exposição do osso alveolar. Após 15 minutos, os retalhos foram retornados à sua posição original e suturados com suturas simples. No lado contralateral (GC), nenhum tratamento foi executado. Após três meses de cicatrização, biópsias contendo dentes e seus tecidos periodontais foram obtidas e preparadas para análise histológica. Resultados: As análises histológicas demonstraram que, no GC, o OAPD exibiu pequena variação de espessura ao longo de toda sua porção coronal na face vestibular. Também foi observado que, no GT, ocorreu uma perda substancial de osso 1 mm abaixo da junção cemento-esmalte (JCE). Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos para as dimensões do OAPD aos 3 e 5 mm abaixo da JCE. Conclusão: Esses resultados sugerem que a espessura do OAPD foi relativamente constante e que a cirurgia a retalho promoveu perda de tecido duro na sua porção mais coronal.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of a medetomidine-ketamine combination on tear production of clinically normal cats by use of the Schirmer tear test (STT) 1 before and during anesthesia and after ...reversal of medetomidine with atipamezole. ANIMALS 40 client-owned crossbred domestic shorthair cats (23 males and 17 females; age range, 6 to 24 months). PROCEDURES A complete physical examination, CBC, and ophthalmic examination were performed on each cat. Cats with no abnormalities on physical and ophthalmic examinations were included in the study. Cats were allocated into 2 groups: a control group (n = 10 cats) anesthetized by administration of a combination of medetomidine hydrochloride (80 μg/kg) and ketamine hydrochloride (5 mg/kg), and an experimental group (30) anesthetized with the medetomidine-ketamine combination and reversal by administration of atipamezole. Tear production of both eyes of each cat was measured by use of the STT I before anesthesia, 15 minutes after the beginning of anesthesia, and 15 minutes after administration of atipamezole. RESULTS Anesthesia with a medetomidine-ketamine combination of cats with no ophthalmic disease caused a significant decrease in tear production. The STT I values returned nearly to preanesthetic values within 15 minutes after reversal with atipamezole, whereas the STT I values for the control group were still low at that point. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results indicated that a tear substitute should be administered to eyes of cats anesthetized with a medetomidine-ketamine combination from the time of anesthetic administration until at least 15 minutes after administration of atipamezole.
