This article discusses the naming of German nationals recorded in historical documents of the largest Kėdainiai of the 16th–18th centuries, reflecting the unique characteristics of this anthroponymic ...system. Notably, a portion of German men have two given names and a surname.
Municipal register books, inventories, and church registers are among the key historical anthroponymic sources of Lithuanian townspeople. The most notableamong these sources are 24 register books of ...Kėdainiai written intheLatin and Polish languages. Thedata of research are148recordings of Kėdainiai women.Thearticle aims to establish and comparethe naming system (of women) used in Kėdainiai of the 17th–18th centuries, underlining more characteristic Polonisationevents of their personal names. The Polonisation of Lithuanian anthroponyms are among the main factors affecting their records. The followingmajor research methods are used to discuss the data ofhistorical anthroponymy: descriptive, reconstructive and comparative. In the 17th century, women were mostly recorded using four anthroponyms, and in the 18th century, only two personal names (i.e., a first name and a surname or replacing the latter with an anthroponym ) were used. Traditional Christian names were predominant among the studied recordings.
Parish registers are among the most important sources of Lithuanian historical anthroponymy. A chronologically unique baptismal register of Joniškis dating to 1599–1621, which is currently the oldest ...known Lithuanian parish register in Lithuania, stands out in the context of such registers. This article delved into the oldest inscriptions dated 1599–1600, which were found in the parish register of Joniškis, describes and analyses 290 personal names (second members of the binary naming model) in terms of formation. The following major research methods are used to discuss the data of historical anthroponymy: descriptive and comparative. The 290 analysed personal names were classified into two groups: anthroponyms with patronymic suffixes and anthroponyms without such suffixes. The first group was much larger. It comprised 274 (or 94.5 %) of all anthroponyms. The second group had 16 (5.5 %) personal names.
This article presents Lithuanian naming trends specific to residents of Kėdainiai in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, underlining characteristic cases of Polonisation of their personal names ...and the most significant factors that affected the recording of anthroponyms in town books. Historical records from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (24 Kėdainiai register books from 1623–1799) were used to extract 505 cases of names of Kėdainiai residents. For comparison, the study also considers examples from the 1752–1799 register of christenings kept by St George’s Church of Kėdainiai Parish. The sources under consideration mostly relied on the binary nomination model (using a name and a surname or a personal name that performed the function of the latter), where the first component was a Christian name written in Polish or Latin. In seventeenth-century records, surnames were Polonised: obvious cases of phonetic alterations were noted, some surnames had no endings, some Lithuanian patronymic and diminutive suffixes were replaced with Slavic suffixes, and Slavic patronymic suffixes -evič, -ovič were added to names without suffixes. However, the Slavicisation of anthroponyms particular to Kėdainiai residents in the seventeenth century was not very intense due to extralinguistic and historical circumstances. In the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the town of Kėdainiai was a Reformist centre of Lithuanianness, and the Lithuanian language was used in the public life of the town. This element of Lithuanianness can also be noticed in the analysed historical sources. Anthroponyms were mostly Polonised in Kėdainiai register books from the eighteenth century. Slavic patronymic suffixes -evič, -ovič were predominant in this period.
The article analyses the patterns of recording German surnames in the town of Kėdainiai in the nineteenth century on the basis of about 350 names extracted from archival records; all of them refer to ...different individuals. Although the settlers of German origin who arrived in Kėdainiai from 1629 already had their surnames, the patterns of their recording varied. This is particularly obvious in cases where members of the same family (e.g. husband and wife) were recorded side by side. In some instances, the woman’s given and maiden names were omitted. Furthermore, some record files of the magistrate indicate only the surname of the litigating spouses. Also, a person (plaintiff, defendant, etc.) mentioned in one document could be referred to in a shorter, simpler or just different form in another record of the trial. More diversity can be observed in the case of the names of female members of the German community in Kėdainiai. On the 1840 list of persons who fulfilled religious rites (received communion) in Kėdainiai (in Keydan), as well as in other parish registers, the surnames of women of German ancestry appear in the same form as those of their husbands or fathers, i.e. without Slavic suffixes (unlike in the book of acts of Kėdainiai of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries). The surnames were recorded in German by persons who were ethnic Germans or had a good command of the language.
