The aim of this study was to examine the associations between sedentary behavior and different intensities of physical activity with cardiometabolic risk, and to analyze the simultaneous effect of ...excess sedentary behavior and recommended levels of physical activity on cardiometabolic risk markers in older adults.
We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study on a sample of older adults (60+) living in Florianopolis, Brazil. The objectively measured predictors were sedentary time, light physical activity and moderate to vigorous physical activity, and the outcomes were markers of cardiometabolic risk. Data were considered valid when the participant had used the accelerometer for at least four days per week.
The sample included 425 older adults (59.8% women), with a mean age of 73.9 years (95%CI: 73.5-74.4). Sedentary behavior was associated with lower systolic blood pressure levels (β = -0.03; 95%CI: -0.05; -0.01) and lower HDL cholesterol (β = -0.02; 95%CI: -0.02; -0.01). Light physical activity was not associated with any cardiovascular risk markers after adjustment. Each minute spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity was associated with lower waist circumference (β = -0.15; 95%CI: -0.24; -0.05), systolic blood pressure (β = -0.18; 95%CI: -0.32; -0.04) and plasma glucose (β = -0.18; 95%CI: -0.33;-0.02), and with higher HDL cholesterol (β = 0.10; 95%CI: 0.01; 0.18). Moreover, physically inactive and sedentary individuals had a greater mean waist circumference and lower HDL cholesterol than physically active and non-sedentary subjects.
The results suggest that moderate to vigorous physical activity have a positive impact on cardiometabolic risk markers in older adults. Light physical activity does not appear to have a beneficial effect on the cardiometabolic markers, and despite the benefits provided by the different intensities of physical activity, the simultaneous presence of sedentary behavior and low physical activity level was associated with poor cardiometabolic risk markers.
Public open spaces (POS) can offer various resources to promote visitation and engagement in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). However, the influence of seasonal variations and specific ...meteorological conditions on this relationship remains unclear. Thus, this study aims to investigate the effect of seasonal variations and specific meteorological elements on different days of the week and times of day on POS use and POS-based MVPA in the Brazilian context. In 2018, repeated measurements carried out in Southern Brazil used a systematic observation to identify the presence of users in the POS and their engagement in MVPA. The meteorological elements (temperature, thermal sensation, and relative humidity), as well as seasonality (summer, autumn, winter, and spring), were aggregated into the observations. A total of 19,712 systematic observations were conducted across nine POS. During these observations, a total of 59,354 users were identified. Out of theses, 39,153 (66.0%) were engaged in POS-based MVPA. The presence of users was found to be more frequent during the spring season (38.7%) and on weekends (ranging from 37.6 to 50.1% across seasons). Additionally, user presence was higher in the late afternoon (ranging from 36.4 to 58.2% across seasons) and at higher temperatures with lower relative humidity (p-value < 0.001). Regarding POS-based MVPA, it was more frequent during the winter season (36.4%) and on weekdays (ranging from 73.2 to 79.9% across seasons). Similarly, MVPA was higher in the late afternoon (ranging from 58.3 to 67.5% across seasons) and at lower temperatures and thermal sensations (p-value < 0.005). Higher presence of users in POS, as well as their visiting, to practice POS-based MVPA, depending on the seasons and specific meteorological elements. By creating infrastructure and conducive conditions, cities can encourage individuals to adopt more active and healthy behaviors. These findings emphasize the importance of designing urban spaces that promote physical activity and contribute to overall well-being.
Resumo: O objetivo do estudo foi analisar a associação entre acessibilidade a espaços públicos de lazer, disponibilidade de equipamentos para atividade física (AF) nestes locais e a prática de ...atividade física no lazer em adultos. Foi conduzido um inquérito domiciliar com 699 adultos de 32 setores censitários selecionados segundo a renda e “walkability”. A acessibilidade a espaços públicos de lazer foi determinada por geoprocessamento segundo a proximidade até os espaços e a quantidade de espaços públicos de lazer contidos nos raios de 500 e 1.000 metros no entorno dos domicílios dos participantes. A presença de equipamentos para AF nos espaços públicos de lazer foi avaliada por método observacional e classificada em: (a) sem equipamento para AF; (b) com equipamento para AF; (c) equipamento para atividade física de adultos; e (d) com três ou mais equipamentos para AF. Essa atividade foi autorreportada e a caminhada analisada separadamente das atividades físicas de intensidade moderada a vigorosa sendo classificada em dois níveis (≥ 10 minutos/semana e ≥ 150 minutos/semana). A quantidade de espaços públicos de lazer, em um raio de 500 metros, com um ou mais equipamentos para AF foi negativamente associada com a prática da caminhada (OR = 0,84, considerando ≥ 150 minutos/semana). A quantidade de espaços públicos de lazer em um raio de 1.000 metros foi positivamente associada com atividades físicas de intensidade moderada a vigorosa (OR = 1,03). A distância até espaços públicos de lazer com três ou mais equipamentos para AF (OR = 0,95) foi inversamente relacionada com atividades físicas de intensidade moderada a vigorosa. A proximidade e a quantidade de espaços públicos de lazer estão associadas com maiores níveis de AF de intensidade moderada a vigorosa de adultos. A combinação de métodos de avaliação pode ajudar a revelar a contribuição que o acesso e a qualidade dos espaços públicos de lazer podem ter para a AF.
Resumen: El objetivo del estudio fue analizar la asociación entre accesibilidad a espacios públicos de ocio, disponibilidad de equipamientos para actividad física (AF) en estos lugares, y la práctica de actividad física durante el ocio en adultos. Se realizó una encuesta domiciliaria con 699 adultos de 32 sectores censitarios, seleccionados según su renta y “walkability” (transitabilidad). La accesibilidad a los espacios públicos de ocio se determinó mediante geoprocesamiento, conforme la proximidad hasta los espacios públicos de ocio y la cantidad de espacios públicos de ocio contenidos en un radio de 500 y 1.000 metros alrededor de los domicilios de los participantes. La presencia de equipamientos para AF en los espacios públicos de ocio se evaluó mediante el método observacional, y fue clasificado en: (a) sin equipamiento para AF; (b) con equipamiento para AF; (c) equipamiento para AF para adultos; e incluso (d) con tres o más equipamientos para AF. La AF fue autoinformada y las caminatas fueron analizadas separadamente de las AF de intensidad moderada a vigorosa, estando clasificadas en dos niveles (≥ 10 minutos/semana y ≥ 150 minutos/semana). La cantidad de espacios públicos de ocio, en un radio de 500 metros, con uno o más equipamientos para AF estuvo negativamente asociada con la realización de caminatas (OR = 0,84, considerando ≥ 150 minutos/semana). La cantidad de espacios públicos de ocio en un radio de 1000 metros estuvo positivamente asociada con AF de intensidad moderada a vigorosa (OR = 1,03). Abstract: The study aimed to analyze the association between accessibility to public spaces for leisure activities, availability of equipment for physical exercise in these spaces, and leisure-time physical activity (PA) in adults. A household survey was conducted with 699 adults from 32 census tracts selected according to income and “walkability”. Accessibility to public spaces for leisure activities was determined by geoprocessing according to proximity to public spaces for leisure activities and the amount of such spaces within radiuses of 500 and 1,000 meters around the participants’ homes. Presence of equipment for physical exercise in these public spaces was assessed by the observation method and classified as: (a) without equipment for physical exercise; (b) with equipment for physical exercise; (c) equipment for physical exercise for adults; and (d) with three or more pieces of equipment for physical exercise. PA was self-reported, and walking was analyzed separately from moderate-vigorous PA, classified in two levels (≥ 10 minutes/week and ≥ 150 minutes/week). The amount of public spaces for leisure activities in a 500-meter radius with one or more pieces of equipment for physical exercise was negatively associated with walking (OR = 0.84, based on ≥ 150 minutes/week). The amount of public spaces for leisure activities in a 1,000-meter radius was positively associated with moderate-vigorous PA (OR = 1.03). The distance to a public space for leisure activities with three or more pieces of equipment for physical exercise (OR = 0.95) was inversely associated with moderate-vigorous PA. Proximity and amount of public spaces for leisure activities are associated with higher levels of moderate-vigorous PA in adults. The combination of methods can help reveal the contribution that access to (and quality of) public spaces for leisure activities can make to PA.
Este estudo investigou os significados de autonomia em saúde e de Práticas Integrativas e Complementares (PIC) atribuídos por usuários e profissionais de um Centro de Saúde (CS) e as possíveis ...contribuições das PIC para a autonomia do usuário. Foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa, cujas informações foram obtidas mediante entrevistas semiestruturadas, gravadas em áudio e interpretadas mediante análise de conteúdo. Participaram 18 indivíduos, entre frequentadores de um grupo de yoga, do serviço de acupuntura e profissionais de um CS de Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brasil. Os resultados revelaram entendimentos múltiplos sobre autonomia em saúde e diferenças entre as PIC investigadas, yoga e acupuntura, o que pareceu relacionado à primeira prática estar mais inserida na lógica da promoção da saúde que a segunda, mais restrita ao âmbito da clínica.

Los resultados revelaron entendimientos múltiples sobre autonomía en salud y diferencias entre las PIC investigadas, yoga y acupuntura, lo que pareció estar relacionado con que la primera práctica estaba más inserida en la lógica de la promoción de la salud que la segunda, más restringida al ámbito de la clínica.
This study investigated meanings of autonomy and integrative and complementary practices (ICPs) assigned by health center (HC) patients and professionals and the potential contribution of ICPs to patient autonomy. We conducted a qualitative study based on data obtained from semi-structured interviews recorded and interpreted using content analysis. Eighteen individuals participated in the study, including members of a yoga group, acupuncture service users, and professionals from a HC in Florianopolis, Brazil. The findings reveal multiple understandings of patient autonomy and differences between the ICPs investigated (yoga and acupuncture). This seemed to be related to the fact that the former is more nested in the health promotion logic than the latter, which is more restricted to the clinical approach.
OBJECTIVETo describe the process and epidemiological implications of georeferencing in EpiFloripa Aging samples (2009-2019).METHODThe EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study sought to investigate and monitor ...the living and health conditions of the older adult population (≥ 60) of Florianópolis in three study waves (2009/2010, 2013/2014, 2017/2019). With an automatic geocoding tool, the residential addresses were spatialized, allowing to investigate the effect of the georeferencing sample losses regarding 19 variables, evaluated in the three waves. The influence of different neighborhood definitions (census tracts, Euclidean buffers, and buffers across the street network) was examined in the results of seven variables: area, income, residential density, mixed land use, connectivity, health unit count, and public open space count. Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate the differences between neighborhood definitions according to three variables: contextual income, residential density, and land use diversity.RESULTThe losses imposed by geocoding (6%, n = 240) caused no statistically significant difference between the total sample and the geocoded sample. The analysis of the study variables suggests that the geocoding process may have included a higher proportion of participants with better income, education, and living conditions. The correlation coefficients showed little correspondence between measures calculated by the three neighborhood definitions (r = 0.37-0.54). The statistical difference between the variables calculated by buffers and census tracts highlights limitations in their use in the description of geospatial attributes.CONCLUSIONDespite the challenges related to geocoding, such as inconsistencies in addresses, adequate correction and verification mechanisms provided a high rate of assignment of geographic coordinates, the findings suggest that adopting buffers, favored by geocoding, represents a potential for spatial epidemiological analyses by improving the representation of environmental attributes and the understanding of health outcomes.
Evidence from developing countries is limited on how income level for a given neighborhood is related to physical activity among its residents.
The goal of the study was to examine the association ...between walkability and physical activity outcomes, and the effect of income on the relationship between walkability and physical activity in adults.
The Spaces for Physical Activity in Adults Study (ESPACOS Project) took place in Curitiba, Brazil. Data were collected in 2010 in 32 census tracts selected to vary in income and walkability, as measured by GIS. Participants were 697 individuals aged 18-65 years (52.0% were women) randomly sampled from the selected neighborhoods. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to measure physical activity. All analyses were conducted in 2012.
The proportion of those who walked for transportation for ≥ 150 minutes/week was 21.1% in low-walkability areas, and ranged from 33.5% to 35.0% in high-walkability areas. A total of 12.6% of residents were found to walk for leisure for ≥ 150 minutes/week; this result did not vary across quadrants of walkability and income level. The prevalence of leisure-time moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was 7.1-10.5 percentage points higher in high-compared to low-walkability areas. After adjusting for all individual confounders, walkability showed an independent association with walking for transport (OR=2.10, 95% CI=1.31, 3.37, p=0.002) and leisure-time MVPA (OR=1.57, 95% CI=1.06, 2.32, p=0.024). Neighborhood income level was independently associated with leisure-time MVPA (OR=1.70, 95% CI=1.06, 2.74, p=0.029). No association was found between walkability and walking for leisure. No interaction was found between walkability and neighborhood income level.
This study, among adults living in Curitiba, Brazil, confirms findings from studies of high-income countries showing that walkability is positively associated with physical activity. People living in high-walkability areas were more likely to be physically active regardless of their neighborhood income level.
The COVID-19 pandemic remains ongoing, with a significant number of survivors who have experienced moderate to severe clinical conditions and who have suffered losses of great magnitude, especially ...in functional capacity, triggering limitations to daily autonomy and quality of life. Among the possibilities of intervention for disease rehabilitation, physical exercise training stands out, which can benefit several health outcomes and favours the adoption of healthier behaviours. Therefore, the aim of the study will be to analyse the effects of physical training on the functional, clinical, morphological, behavioural and psychosocial status in adults and the elderly following COVID-19 infection.
A randomised controlled clinical trial is to be conducted in parallel, with the experimental group undergoing an intervention involving a multicomponent physical rehabilitation programme, carried out at the Sports Center in partnership with the Academic Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Florianópolis, Brazil. Participants will be adults and the elderly, of both sexes, in a post-COVID-19-infection state, who were hospitalised during the infection. The intervention will have a total duration of 24 weeks and will include a multicomponent physical training programme, which will have gradual progression in frequency, duration and intensity over time. Regarding the outcomes, before, at the 12th and after 24 weeks of intervention, functional (primary outcome = functional index of aerobic capacity), clinical, morphological, behavioural and psychosocial outcomes will be assessed.
This study will contribute to a greater understanding of the safety, adherence and benefits of physical training in the rehabilitation of post-COVID-19 patients. The results of this study will be disseminated through presentations at congresses, workshops, peer-reviewed publications and local and international conferences, especially with a view to proposing a post-COVID-19 rehabilitation care protocol.

To analyze the association between sociodemographic characteristics of census tracts and the presence/quality of public open spaces and physical activity facilities.
A cross-sectional study was ...conducted in 643 census tracts in Florianópolis, Brazil, the presence and quality of public open spaces and physical activity facilities were objectively analyzed and the data by census tracts using Geographic Information Systems was treated. Outcomes were analyzed considering the census tracts as having: ≥ 1 public open spaces; ≥ 1 public open spaces with high quality; ≥ 2 physical activity facilities and high-quality physical activity facilities. Sociodemographic characteristics were the independent variables. Logistic regression analysis was performed.
Census tracts with a medium-income (OR = 1.8; 95%CI 1.1-3.0) and high-income (OR = 2.4; 95%CI 1.4-4.0), in those with medium (OR = 1.7; 95%CI 1.0-2.7) and high residential density (OR = 2.0; 95%CI 1,2-3.3), and with higher proportions of older adults (OR = 3.3; 95%CI 1.9-5.7) had a higher proportion of public open spaces. Census tracts with higher proportions of children/adolescents (OR = 0.3; 95%CI 0.2-0.6) and non-white residents (OR= 0.6; 95%CI 0.3-0.9) were less likely to contain public open spaces. The tracts with medium (OR = 4.0; 95%CI 1.4-11.3) and high-income (OR = 3.6; 95%CI 1.2-10.2) were more likely to contain public open spaces with ≥ 2 structures for physical activity, compared with those with low-income. We observed the inverse in sectors with a high proportion of non-white residents (OR = 0.3; 95%CI 0.1-0.9).
Census tracts with higher proportions of children or adolescents, non-white individuals and those in the low-income strata had lower odds of containing public open spaces and physical activity facilities.
ABSTRACT Counseling strategies, such as the 5A model, can provide important changes in physical activity. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of physical activity counseling ...strategies used by professionals of the Expanded Nucleus of Family Health and Primary Health Care (ENFH-PHC) of Florianópolis according to the 5As model. A survey was conducted with ENFH-PHC professionals. The collection took place in the planning meetings of the Health Centers. There were 72 professionals, 40 employees and 32 residents. Most of the professionals reported some physical activity counseling in the last 12 months (97.2%). Among the professionals who reported some type of counseling, the most reported counseling strategies focus on "As" ask (94.1%), advise (98.5%) and assist (95.7%). The least reported strategy was arranging (25.7%). The most used resource was to indicate the participation in groups of physical activity of the Health Center. It is concluded that ENFH-PHC professionals perform physical activity counseling and use some strategies according to the 5A model, although they are not used in a systematic way. Therefore, it is recommended to invest in lifelong education in the use of tools for evaluation (assess) and in the improvement of strategies to follow up (effectiveness) to improve the practice of counseling.
Being active has been shown to have beneficial effects for the health of individuals with chronic diseases. However, data on the association between multimorbidity and physical activity are limited.

Cross-sectional population-based and household-based study derived from the second wave (2013-2014) of the EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study.
Insufficiency of physical activity (outcome) was ascertained using the long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (≤ 150 minutes/week). Eleven self-reported chronic diseases were identified. Multimorbidity was defined from the number of chronic diseases (none; 2 or 3; or 4 or more). The adjustment variables were age, schooling, marital status, income, smoking, alcohol consumption and cognition. Additionally, each chronic disease was adjusted for the others. Associations were tested using logistic regression (crude and adjusted).
Among the 1197 participants (≥ 63 years), women (54.0%) were more likely than men (39.6%) to be insufficiently active. In the adjusted analysis, women and men with depressive symptoms, and men with diabetes, were more likely to be insufficiently active than those without symptoms. Multimorbid women were more likely to be insufficiently active, and the magnitude of the effect was strongest for 4 or more diseases.
This study indicates that the associations were sex-specific. Depressive symptoms and multimorbidity were associated with insufficient physical activity among women, while diabetes was associated with insufficient physical activity among men.
