Alma M. Karlin, a young woman adventurer who made her journey around the world between 1919 and 1927, stayed in Japan for a little more than a year. As a young woman without significant funds, she ...relied on her own ability to earn a living during her stay in the country. Among the items she brought back from Japan to Slovenia there are many small objects which are not typical “exotic objects from the Far East”. They are rather small and trivial items such as a wall calendar, a streetcar ticket, children’s miniature toys, a part of ceremonial wrappings, and paper bookmarks. This paper focuses on the small and untypical items Karlin brought back from Japan. Karlin’s travelogue and other writings, including her notes on the unused postcards, give us some information about her life in Japan. Together with her travelogue, notes and messages on the objects in her legacy, we can reconstruct some aspects of her everyday life in Japan. Though small and trivial, such items collected by Karlin reveal some important details of her experience in the central part of Tokyo in the Taishō period.
V okviru projekta Vzhodnoazijske zbirke v Sloveniji smo evidentirali dve kozuki, v resnici le ročaja nožev, ki so se uporabljali v kontekstu bojevniške kulture na Japonskem. Kozuka kot majhen nož je ...imela svoje mesto na skrbno izdelanem samurajskem meču med 16. in 19. stoletjem. Članek na kratko predstavlja zbirateljstvo na Japonskem in prve stike zahodnih zbirateljev z japonskimi starimi in eksotičnimi predmeti. Upodobitvi na zunanji strani kozuk, ki ju hrani Pomorski muzej v Piranu, prikazujeta boga Fukurokujuja v ljudskem verovanju in prizor »žrebec pod češnjevimi cvetovi«. Na osnovi ozadja nekdanjega lastnika Antona Dolenca (1871–1920), ki je kot član avstro-ogrske mornarice potoval v Vzhodno Azijo, lahko ugotovimo čas in kraj nakupa oz. pridobitve obeh kozuk. Kozuki je odkupil Pomorski muzej v Piranu leta 1964, medtem ko so nekateri drugi predmeti iz Dolenčeve zbirke končali v Slovenskem etnografskem muzeju v Ljubljani.

As a part of the research activities “East Asian Collections in Slovenia”, many old Japanese postcards have been identified in recent years. For the postcards archived in the National and University ...Library (NUK) in Ljubljana, no information was available in relation to their user or collector, when and from whom these postcards were acquired, etc. Out of 16 Japanese and Chinese postcards in the Library, seven have been actually used and sent with some messages from Japan or China to today’s Slovenia in the year 1899. During the research on other picture-postcards archived in today’s Slovenia, and in cooperation with specialists in Japanese Studies and the history of the modern era (end of the 19th and beginning of 20th centuries, the Meiji period in Japan) in the context of East Asian and Austro-Hungarian exchanges, it has gradually become clear who the user of the postcards was and in what setting. It was Jožef Obereigner, the second son of the caretaker of the Snežnik estate, who was an engineer and served in the Austro-Hungarian Navy.

This paper presents the process and mechanism of borrowing from Japanese into Slovene. Japan and Slovenia are geographically and culturally quite distant, and the two languages are genealogically ...not related. Between such two languages, not many borrowings are expected, but there is a certain amount of borrowed words of Japanese origin in today's Slovene. The focus of this paper is on the words of Japanese origin that are well integrated in today’s Slovene. Firstly, the process of borrowing is analysed: there are three main phases for successful borrowing from Japanese into Slovene, but during the process, some obstacles may hinder the completion of this process, so that further creative use of some borrowed words in the Slovene environment cannot be expected. The second part of this paper will closely look at the loanwords of Japanese origin which are already recorded as headwords in today’s dictionaries of Slovene. The loanwords are analysed in relation to the borrowing process and adjustments, their semantic fields, and wherever possible, their diachronic changes in use, and other specifics. At the end, the image of Japan seen through the borrowing process and consolidated loanwords is summarized, and possible development of borrowing in the near future is predicted.
V okviru raziskave “Vzhodnoazijske zbirke v Sloveniji” smo identificirali stare japonske razglednice v več ustanovah po Republiki Sloveniji. Za večino zbirk vemo imena posameznih zbiralcev in ozadje ...zbiranja. Ta prispevek predstavlja 160 razglednic, ki so bile med letoma 1899 in 1920 natisnjene na Japonskem, nekatere med njimi pa so v istem obdobju tudi uporabili. Fotografije na teh razglednicah lahko delimo na štiri kategorije: 1) pokrajina, pristanišča, mesta in turistične znamenitosti; 2) hiše, vrtovi, oblačila, pričeske in navade Japoncev; 3) posebni predmeti npr. lutke, ladje; 4) naravne nesreče. Obdobje od konca 19. stoletja do leta 1920 lahko imenujemo “Doba razglednic”, saj so razglednice v tem času imele pomembno vlogo posredovanja informacij in novic iz daljnih krajev npr. z Japonske in iz Vzhodne Azije.
This paper firstly introduces The Korean Orthography of Loanwords and its history. Recently with more cultural and economic exchanges between Korea and Slovenia, the Korean Orthography guidelines for ...Slovene words are needed to guide words of Slovene origin when settling in Korean. Although Serbo-Croatian is not an official language of Slovenia, some Slovene words are currently written in Korean according to the guidelines for Serbo-Croatian in KOL. Therefore, we exam the current Korean orthography examples of Slovene words and suggest amendments based on the origin pronunciation. In order to avoid further confusion and to provide the foundation of Korean Orthography of Slovene words, we firstly demonstrated a comparison table of Slovene alphabet (abeceda) and Korean alphabet (Hangeul) supported with examples of Slovene words, and then suggested detailed guidelines on how to write Slovene words in Hangeul.

Japanese has no category of gender or number. Nouns as well as adjectives have no inflection. The phonological construction of words is syllabic and there is no stress accent but pitch accent. Five ...vowels have short and long opposition. On the other hand, Slovene has categories of number and gender. Nouns are inflected according to six cases. Phonologically, all nouns carry a stress accent. In this paper, the gender and number assignment to loanwords of Japanese origin in Slovene is discussed on the basis of the morphology and phonology of the source and recipient languages. Assignment rules have certain morphological and semantic foundations. The relative competence of the speakers of the recipient language, Slovene, is particularly noticeable when activating the categories and rules that are specific to their own language. The integration of loanwords may be observed through the additional derivation of adjectives and nouns within the framework of the recipient language.
