The spread of farming out of the Balkans and into the rest of Europe followed two distinct routes: An initial expansion represented by the Impressa and Cardial traditions, which followed the Northern ...Mediterranean coastline; and another expansion represented by the LBK (Linearbandkeramik) tradition, which followed the Danube River into Central Europe. Although genomic data now exist from samples representing the second migration, such data have yet to be successfully generated from the initial Mediterranean migration. To address this, we generated the complete genome of a 7,400-year-old Cardial individual (CB13) from Cova Bonica in Vallirana (Barcelona), as well as partial nuclear data from five others excavated from different sites in Spain and Portugal. CB13 clusters with all previously sequenced early European farmers and modern-day Sardinians. Furthermore, our analyses suggest that both Cardial and LBK peoples derived from a common ancient population located in or around the Balkan Peninsula. The Iberian Cardial genome also carries a discernible hunter-gatherer genetic signature that likely was not acquired by admixture with local Iberian foragers. Our results indicate that retrieving ancient genomes from similarly warm Mediterranean environments such as the Near East is technically feasible.
Detecting people in images and videos captured from an aerial platform in wooded areas for search and rescue operations is a current problem. Detection is difficult due to the relatively small ...dimensions of the person captured by the sensor in relation to the environment. The environment can generate occlusion, complicating the timely detection of people. There are currently numerous RGB image datasets available that are used for person detection tasks in urban and wooded areas and consider the general characteristics of a person, like size, shape, and height, without considering the occlusion of the object of interest. The present research work focuses on developing a thermal image dataset, which considers the occlusion situation to develop CNN convolutional deep learning models to perform detection tasks in real-time from an aerial perspective using altitude control in a quadcopter prototype. Extended models are proposed considering the occlusion of the person, in conjunction with a thermal sensor, which allows for highlighting the desired characteristics of the occluded person.
This article addresses the development and experimental validation of a trajectory-tracking control for a miniature autonomous Quadrotor helicopter system (X4-prototype) using a robust algorithm ...control based on second-order sliding mode technique or also known as super-twisting algorithm in outdoor environments. This nonlinear control strategy guarantees the convergence in finite time to a desired path r(t) in the presence of external disturbances or uncertainties in the model affecting the appropriate behavior of our Quadrotor helicopter. For this purpose, a polynomial smooth curve trajectory is selected as a reference signal where the corresponding derivatives of the function are bounded. Moreover, we consider disturbances due to wind gusts acting on the aerial vehicle, and the reference signal is pre-programmed in an advanced autopilot system. The proposed solution consists of implementing a real-time control law based on super-twisting control using GPS measurements in order to obtain the position in the xy-plane to accomplish the desired trajectory. Simulation and experimental results of trajectory-tracking control are presented to demonstrate the performance and robustness of the proposed nonlinear controller in windy conditions.
There are few studies on the processes involved in landslides in the soils of the Colombian coffee region in relation to the soil water content. In order to contribute to this knowledge, several ...experiments over a terrain model under simulated rainfall were conducted. Seven experiments on laboratory slope models, 1.8 m2 base, 1.0 m height, and 32° slope, with soil bulk density and soil horizons arrangement similar to in situ conditions, were built. Samples of altered residual soil derived from granitic rocks were collected in the municipality of Ibagué – Colombia from the surface down to 1.6 m depth. In each laboratory model, eight suction tensiometers (0 to −85 kPa) were located, and measurement under simulated rainfall was done. The results indicated a relationship of mass movements with hydrological processes occurring in the slope, related to soil permeability, rainfall intensity and duration, and water table changes. The major portion of soil slope instability cases was related to a saturated condition of the slope toe.
