There is a need to analyse systems using complex networks modelling. In this study, we use this modelling to peform the resilience analysis of self-healing systems. These systems have the ability to ...change their topology to recover themselves from a failure or to adapt to new situations. Also, the resilience of a reference system from the REDS (REpository of Distribution Systems) repository and of some expansions of it with the addition of edges to the system using an Small-world topology method were analysed. An algorithm that simulates the reconfiguration of the system in case of failure was implemented. The analysis was performed for a variable number of edges' failures. The resilience investigation was done using the fraction of nodes still connected to an source after the system recovery over the total number of nodes in the system. A study of cost-benefit was also performed for one of the tested system expansions. The results show the benefits of adding redundancy to the system, which was expected, and show that the cost-benefit has a non-linear relation with the increase of redundancies in the system.

This study was ...designed to compare spinal anesthesia using hyperbaric bupivacaine given as a conventional dose by lumbar puncture or as a low-dose by thoracic puncture.
A total of 140 patients with symptomatic gallstone disease were randomized to undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy with low-pressure CO(2) pneumoperitoneum under spinal anesthesia using either conventional lumbar spinal anesthesia (hyperbaric bupivacaine 15 mg and fentanyl 20 mg) or low-dose thoracic spinal anesthesia (hyperbaric bupivacaine 7.5 mg and fentanyl 20 μg). Intraoperative parameters, postoperative pain, complications, recovery time, and patient satisfaction at follow-up were compared between the two treatment groups.
All procedures were completed under spinal anesthesia, with no cases needing conversion to general anesthesia. Values for time for block to reach the T(3) dermatomal level, duration of motor and sensory block, and hypotensive events were significantly lower with low-dose bupivacaine. Postoperative pain was higher for low-dose hyperbaric bupivacaine at 6 and 12 hours. All patients were discharged after 24 hours. Follow-up 1 week postoperatively showed all patients to be satisfied and to be keen advocates of spinal anesthesia.
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be performed successfully under spinal anesthesia. A small dose of hyperbaric bupivacaine 7.5 mg and 20 μg fentanyl provides adequate spinal anesthesia for laparoscopy and, in comparison with hyperbaric bupivacaine 15% and fentanyl 20 μg, causes markedly less hypotension. The low-dose strategy may have an advantage in ambulatory patients because of the earlier recovery of motor and sensory function and earlier discharge.

The purpose of the present research was to further evaluate the role of hippocampalN-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in inhibitory avoidance task consolidation. Adult male Wistar rats were ...trained and tested in a step-down inhibitory avoidance task (0.4 mA footshock, 24 h training–test interval). Immediately after training, animals received a 0.5-μl intrahippocampal infusion of the NMDA receptor antagonist aminophosphonopentanoic acid (AP5) (5.0 μg) or vehicle (phosphate buffer in saline, pH 7.4). The infusion of AP5 impaired retention test performance. Both pretraining with a low footshock intensity (0.2 mA) or preexposure to the inhibitory avoidance box 24 h before training prevented the amnestic effect of AP5. The results suggest that hippocampal NMDA receptors are critical for neither the enhancement of retention induced by an additional training session nor the inhibitory avoidance retention in animals that have previously learned about the task environment by preexposure to the apparatus.
OBJETIVO: Avaliar, morfologicamente, por tomografia computadorizada espiral, enxertos de pericárdio bovino liso empregados como substitutos aórticos. MÉTODOS: Dez pacientes foram submetidos a exame ...por tomografia computadorizada espiral para reconstituição da imagem dos enxertos. Os critérios de seleção foram tempo de seguimento superior a 2 anos, enxertos de pericárdio liso não revestido, implantados na aorta ascendente ou descendente. RESULTADOS: Os exames demonstraram bom resultado cirúrgico em todos os casos, persistindo em alguns, a imagem de dissecção aórtica distal à anastomose. Um caso apresentava hematoma entre o enxerto e a parede aórtica, em 5 não foram encontradas alterações estruturais no pericárdio e, nos demais, foi detectada dilatação de grau leve, em relação ao diâmetro descrito do enxerto implantado. Não foram vistos sinais de calcificação ou pseudoaneurismas. CONCLUSÃO: Os enxertos tubulares de pericárdio bovino liso, não revestido, apresentam resultados satisfatórios quando empregados como substitutos aórticos. A médio prazo, não foram detectadas anormalidades estruturais relacionadas ao material empregado, pela tomografia computadorizada espiral, exceto dilatação em alguns casos.
