Scholars have long appreciated the centrality of ...trade and commerce in understanding the connectivity and mobility that underpin human experience in the Indian Ocean region. But studies of merchant and commercial activities have paid little attention to the role that cargoes have played in connecting the disparate parts of this vast oceanic world. Drawing from the work of anthropologists, geographers, and historians, Cargoes in Motion tells the story of how material objects have informed and continue to shape processes of exchange across the Indian Ocean.
By following selected cargoes through both space and time, this book makes an important and innovative contribution to Indian Ocean studies. The multidisciplinary approach deepens our understanding of the nature and dynamics of the Indian Ocean world by showing how transoceanic connectivity has been driven not only by economic, social, cultural, and political factors but also by the materiality of the objects themselves.

This article discusses political and ritual aspects of indigeneity in the former jungle kingdoms of southern and northern Orissa. It will ask whether "tribal" principles of authority and ...sociopolitical organization do or do not differ from "royal" ones, and argue that the dichotomy, which is often taken for granted, between states and stateless societies must be questioned. In place of using this dichotomy, this article identifies a "contact zone" in which acephalous segmentary lineage societies and kingdoms existed side by side and were interconnected in mutually reinforcing ways. But how can such aggregations of two apparently different forms of political organization, with their concomitant ideologies, be understood as forming a unitary whole? How was the relationship between the royal principles of rule and authority of the Hindu kind, on the one hand, and the tribal principles of rule and authority on the other, viewed and practically pursued by the indigenous, and sometimes exegenous, actors themselves?

In diesem Beitrag werden die beiden zentralen Begriffe des Symposiums, agency und patiency (respektive passio), zunächst ideengeschichtlich sowie anhand ethnographischer und ...historischer Beispielen erläutert. Daraufhin wird argumentiert, dass es vor allem die hierarchisch geordnete Dialektik von agency und patiency ist, die in einer auf Standpunkte der Akteure fokussierten Analyse unweigerlich in den Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung rückt. Diese dialektische Beziehung aus emischer Sicht in die Analyse einzubeziehen, stellt, so die These des Artikels und des Symposiums als solches, eine wichtige Ergänzung und Korrektur zu den gängigen agency-versus-structure-Debatten dar.
