Purpose The aim of this study was to update reference data of handgrip strength for healthy adults of both genders spanning a wide age range and to analyze possible factors of influence. Methods ...Intraindividual and interindividual variations of grip strength and their relation to several anthropometric factors were analyzed in a standardized manner for 769 healthy adults (women, n = 403; men, n = 366) aged between 20 years and 95 years. Measurements were done in neutral position of arm, forearm, and wrist on setting II of a Baseline digital hydraulic dynamometer (NexGen Ergonomics Inc. Quebec, Canada). Results Mean strength was about 41% less in women (right 29 kg; left 27 kg) than in men (right 49 kg; left 47 kg) resulting in a ratio of left to right hand slightly above .95 in both genders. During the course of life, hand strength develops comparably in both genders peaking at 35 years of age and decreasing continuously further on. Anthropometric variables such as forearm circumference and length, hand size, or body mass showed a positive correlation with grip strength. Body mass index, type of work, and hand dominance showed only a partial positive correlation or no correlation with grip strength. Gender and age, followed by parameters representing body length and obesity, were observed to have the highest predictive value for handgrip strength and were therefore entered into the generation of prediction equations. Conclusions We recommend side adjustment of measured values for intraindividual comparison and inclusion of information regarding anthropometric characteristics, as well as using gender- and age-adjusted reference values, whereas hand dominance can be neglected. The regression equations we generated might prove to be useful for clinicians or for those who use normative values within software to provide more accurate predictions of strength scores for specific applications.

zero-grazing, tethering, dehorning, disposal of male calves, and early cow-calf separation. We focused on the latter and reviewed studies addressing public opinions about dealing with calves in dairy farming. We show that most respondents in studies are unaware or reject these practices. During the last years, more and more attention was paid to cow-calf separation. This practice is mainly rejected because it is considered to be unnatural and associated with stress for the animals. However, there is a lack of scientific surveys that explore the public opinion about how much stress is tolerable in animals that have been allowed to live up to their needs for a period of time. On the other hand, the economic aspects of management practices enabling the animals to express their natural behavior to a greater extent than in the current husbandry systems should be investigated comprehensively. The amount of sales and the willingness to pay a higher price for milk and meat produced in such systems might be the key factors to a wider acceptance of such systems by dairy farmers, who will expect to be compensated for their increased efforts.
In forestry research, the concept of ecosystem services (ESS) is less prominent than in agricultural studies. One reason might be that multifunctional forestry and the concept of forest functions, ...i.e., societal demand from forest, are established and legally required planning approaches in Central Europe, e.g., in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. To explore differences in concept and perspective, we conducted a participatory stakeholder workshop to identify, score, and map ESS in an urban forest in Germany. For comparison, we used existing forest function maps. Forest function mapping as planning approach is based on a regional-scale expert assessment of forest agencies. The local ESS scoring showed a clear preference for recreation, drinking water, biodiversity, mediation of climate and water, and wood provision in decreasing order. Most stakeholder groups scored recreation highest. Drinking water was also important for most stakeholders. Recreation stakeholders scored unbalanced with an apparent focus on their own demand (Gini coefficient: 0.83). Contrastingly, forestry stakeholders scored the ESS in a balanced manner (Gini coefficient: 0.47). ESS and forest function maps highly overlapped. The stakeholders identified both synergies and trade-offs between timber and biodiversity and between drinking water and biodiversity depending on the management. Recreation has mostly trade-offs, with timber, hunting, and drinking water. The stakeholders mapped only few ESS in addition to forest functions, e.g., feed production, beekeeping, and biodiversity hotspots. Although forest functions consider most forest benefits despite weak stakeholder consultation, the opportunity to prioritize forest benefits and to analyze interactions is a clear added value of the ESS approach. The paradigm of simultaneous provision of all forest functions does not reflect heterogeneous societal preferences. The stakeholders showed a rather low level of conflict and a high level of understanding for differences in their prioritization. The reason might be the long local tradition of multiple-use forestry beginning in the late 1800s. The study area is an example for an urban forest of a larger city in Europe with high pressure from local recreation. It would be interesting to test the approach for other environmental conditions and locations of an urban forest. In general, the developed approach could be used to evaluate the quality of other planning instruments for multiple-use forestry worldwide regarding their consideration of stakeholder requirements and the potential added value of the ESS approach.
Metaphyseal core decompression of the distal radius (MCD) is clinically effective in early lunate necrosis without changing individual wrist mechanics. Its concept is based on the induction of ...physiologic mechanisms known as physiologic fracture healing response. However, this biological concept does not yet have its place in the historically developed mechanical concepts about Kienböck's disease and requires more detailed clarifications to understand when a change of individual wrist mechanics might be unnecessary.
Thirteen consecutive cases, Lichtman stage I (n = 1) or II (n = 12), confirmed by conventional MRI, were treated by MCD. Time off work, changes in magnetic resonance imaging of the lunate, as well as clinical outcome using modified Mayo wrist score were evaluated at final follow-up.
Return to work was at six (1-10) weeks after surgery. MRI controls at short-term generally demonstrated stop of progression and signs of bone healing. Independently from ulna variance complete signal normalization was observed in six and a distinct, yet incomplete decrease of lunate bone marrow edema and zones of fat necrosis was confirmed in further six cases after a mean of 21 (13-51) weeks. One patient had radiographic controls only, stating normal healing at 56 months. After a mean follow-up of 37 (12-70) months the clinical outcomes were excellent in eleven and good in two cases (mean 95% in modified Mayo wrist score).
In stage I and II lunate necrosis MCD stops disease progression, it improves clinical symptoms and induces normalization of lunate bone signal alterations in MRI. Findings suggest that stage I and II lunate necrosis can be effectively treated without alterations of individual wrist mechanics. Future studies are necessary to readjust common concepts regarding Kienböck's disease, especially focusing on conservative therapy.

Die vorliegende Arbeit hatte das Ziel, die Ansichten der Öffentlichkeit zur Haltung von wichtigen Nutztierarten wie Milchkühen, Mastschweinen, Masthähnchen und Legehennen zu ...untersuchen. Dabei wurde sowohl die konventionelle als auch die ökologische Tierhaltung in den Blick genommen. Die Umfragen wurden in drei Wellen durchgeführt, und ein erheblicher Teil der Befragten äußerte Unzufriedenheit mit den Unterbringungsbedingungen aller Tierarten. Besonders hervorgehoben wurde die Unzufriedenheit mit der Haltung von Mastschweinen und Masthühnchen, sowohl in konventionellen als auch ökologischen Betrieben. Viele Befragte betrachten Landwirtinnen und Landwirte als Schlüsselakteure bei der Förderung des Tierschutzes und sind der Ansicht, dass sie eine zentrale Rolle bei der Verbesserung der Tierhaltungsbedingungen spielen sollten. Ein weiteres interessantes Ergebnis der Umfragen war auch, dass zwischen 62 % und 71 % der Befragten bereit wären, finanzielle Mittel aus anderen Haushaltsausgaben zur Verfügung zu stellen, um die Bedingungen in der Nutztierhaltung zu verbessern. Dies deutet auf eine gewisse Bereitschaft der Öffentlichkeit hin, in Maßnahmen zur Förderung des Tierwohls zu investieren. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit können für verschiedene Interessengruppen von Nutzen sein, einschließlich Landwirtinnen und Landwirte, die Veränderungen in der Tierhaltung umsetzen möchten. Auch Gesetzgeber könnten diese Ergebnisse als Grundlage für die Entwicklung neuer Vorschriften und Richtlinien zur Verbesserung der Tierhaltung nutzen. Insgesamt zeigt die Arbeit, dass die Meinungen der Öffentlichkeit zur Nutztierhaltung und zum Tierschutz eine wichtige Rolle bei der Gestaltung der Zukunft dieser Branche spielen können. Sie betont die Bedeutung eines umfassenden Dialogs und einer verstärkten Zusammenarbeit zwischen verschiedenen Interessengruppen, um die Tierhaltung in eine nachhaltigere und tierfreundlichere Richtung zu lenken.

Die Berichterstattung der Medien über die landwirtschaftliche Nutztierhaltung erfüllt eine doppelte Funktion: Einerseits fungiert sie als wichtige Verbindung zwischen der ...landwirtschaftlichen Nutztierhaltung und der Öffentlichkeit. Andererseits wird die Medienberichterstattung als potenzielle Ursache für wachsende Unterschiede und als Einflussfaktor für kritische Haltungen in der Bevölkerung angesehen. Im Jahr 2022 wurde daher eine repräsentative Umfrage unter Bürgerinnen und Bürgern in Deutschland durchgeführt, um zu untersuchen, wie verschiedene demografische Gruppen die Medienberichterstattung über die landwirtschaftliche Nutztierhaltung wahrnehmen und bewerten. Die Ergebnisse zeigten signifikante Zusammenhänge zwischen soziodemografischen Merkmalen und der Bewertung der Medienberichte. Insbesondere Frauen und jüngere Personen tendieren dazu, die Medienberichterstattung und die landwirtschaftliche Nutztierhaltung kritischer zu bewerten. Im Gegensatz dazu nehmen Männer und ältere Personen die landwirtschaftliche Nutztierhaltung tendenziell positiver wahr, als sie in den Medien dargestellt wird.
Purpose
CA 19-9 is the only established tumor marker in pancreatic cancer (PC); the prognostic role of other serum markers like CEA, CRP, LDH or bilirubin has not yet been defined.
Methods
We pooled ...pre-treatment data on CA 19-9, CEA, CRP, LDH and bilirubin levels from two German multicenter randomized phase II trials together with prospective patient data from one high-volume German Cancer Center. Marker levels were assessed locally before the start of palliative first-line therapy for advanced PC and serially during treatment (for CA 19-9 only). Clinical and biomarker data (overall 12 variables) were correlated with the efficacy endpoints time-to-progression (TTP) and overall survival (OS) by using uni- and multivariate Cox models.
Results
Data from 291 patients were included in this pooled analysis; 253 patients (87 %) received treatment within prospective clinical trials. Median TTP in the study cohort was 5.1 months and median OS 9.0 months. In univariate analysis, pre-treatment CA 19-9 (HR 1.55), LDH (HR 2.04) and CEA (HR 1.89) levels were significantly associated with TTP. Regarding OS, baseline CA 19-9 (HR 1.46), LDH (HR 2.07), CRP (HR 1.69) and bilirubin (HR 1.62) were significant prognostic factors. Within multivariate analyses, pre-treatment log CA 19-9 (as continuous variable for TTP) and log bilirubin as well as log CRP (for OS) had an independent prognostic value. A CA 19-9 decline of ≥25 % during the first two chemotherapy cycles was predictive for TTP and OS, independent of the applied CA 19-9 assay.
Conclusion
Baseline CA 19-9 and CA 19-9 kinetics during first-line chemotherapy are prognostic in advanced PC. Besides that finding other serum markers like CRP, LDH and bilirubin can also provide prognostic information on TTP and OS.

Die landwirtschaftliche Nutztierhaltung steht seit Jahren in der öffentlichen Kritik. Insbesondere die vorherrschenden intensiven Haltungsbedingungen werden von weiten Teilen der ...Gesellschaft kritisiert und sind auch aus tierwissenschaftlicher Sicht stark verbesserungsbedürftig. Mittlerweile ist aber auch hinreichend bekannt, dass die landwirtschaftliche Nutztierhaltung nicht nur negative Auswirkungen auf das Tierwohl, sondern auch auf Umwelt, Klima oder die menschliche Gesundheit hat. Vor diesem Hintergrund ergeben sich unterschiedliche Zielkonflikte, die eine nachhaltige und zukunftsorientierte Transformation des Sektors erschweren. Gerade die Verbesserung des Tierwohls stellt eine komplexe Aufgabe dar, bei der mögliche Zielkonflikte auch aus gesellschaftlicher Sicht identifiziert und bewertet werden müssen, um dem zunehmenden Akzeptanzverlust entgegenzuwirken. Daher hat die vorliegende Studie in einer Online-Befragung mit Hilfe der Methoden des Best-Worst Scaling (BWS) und Rankings untersucht, wie wichtig den Menschen in Deutschland verschiedene relevante Aspekte in der Nutztierhaltung im Konfliktfall sind. Dabei wurde nicht nur die Bewertung von Aspekten verschiedener Zielkategorien wie Tier-, Umwelt- und Klimaschutz oder menschliche Gesundheit betrachtet, sondern auch einzelne Teilaspekte innerhalb des Tierschutzes bzw. Tierwohls für Mastschweine, Milchkühe, Masthähnchen und Legehennen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Befragten unabhängig von der Tierart oder der verwendeten Methode dem Tierschutz und der menschlichen Gesundheit eine höhere Priorität einräumen als anderen Nachhaltigkeitsaspekten und insbesondere Produkteigenschaften. Hinsichtlich des Tierwohls wurden bei allen Tierarten die Aspekte gute Haltungsbedingungen, gute Versorgung mit Futter und Wasser und gute Tiergesundheit am höchsten gewichtet. Die Ergebnisse leisten einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Entwicklung politischer Rahmenbedingungen, die auf eine nachhaltige und gesellschaftlich akzeptierte Transformation der derzeitigen landwirtschaftlichen Nutztierhaltung abzielen.
