Various sustainable development goals (SDG's) that have been achieved with current economic business models initiated the new socioeconomic system known as the “sharing economy.” This collaborative ...economy system shares resources among communities and further assists to reduce both negative environmental and societal impacts and to reduce costs. The importance of this endeavor urges researchers to investigate the sharing economy more fully through different applications, primarily including transportation and customer service. However, these studies fail to attempt to explore the perspectives of the sharing economy through industrial applications. Industrial sectors are more prone towards negative sustainability; hence, it is necessary to address strategies to promote and to implement the sharing economy with an industrial perspective. Hence, this study seeks to identify the barriers of sharing economy implementation in industries, particularly with small and medium scale enterprises (SME) located in India. Common barriers are identified through the combined assistance of literature review and experts' opinions. These common barriers are shortlisted through Best Worst Method (BWM) and further analyzed through proposed solution methodology, DEMATEL, with the support of case industrial managers. Among 15 shortlisted barriers of sharing economy, “Lack of trust” was identified as the most influential and “Capital cost” was identified as the least influential barriers. This study contributes to both academic and practitioner levels by identifying the most common barriers of the industrial sharing economy. Further, we present strategies so practitioners can evade such barriers through customized practices instead of providing a generic treatment. In addition, this study provides a new approach to the literature; insight into the ‘industrial sharing economy’ could be a scientific breakthrough for upcoming studies. Finally, the study concludes with various useful recommendations and suggestions on the implementation of sharing economy in industries, particularly with SMEs. These recommendations shed light into various key research areas, which can be examined more fully in future studies.
Increasing numbers of end-of-life vehicles and a burgeoning concern for conservation of resources pressures the implementation of auto parts remanufacturing globally. But unlike in developed nations, ...developing countries encounter struggle with the implementation of auto parts remanufacturing due to hidden facts. Many researchers have explored such hidden facts in auto parts remanufacturing in developing nations and their emerging economies. However, there is a huge gap in the state-of-the-art remanufacturing practices in India, despite India's strong advancements in the automobile industry. In fact, India's automobile industry is rapidly approaching that of China's in recent years. Although some studies are available regarding remanufacturing implementation, current research has generally failed to offer a deep analysis of the factors and barriers that exist as hurdles to such implementation. Consequently, this paper attempts to investigate the essential barrier to auto parts remanufacturing in an Indian scenario, and we also address vital interrelationships and interdependencies. To achieve the aim of the study, a model framework is proposed and applied to an Indian case industry. The data obtained from the case industry is processed with two solution methodologies: namely, interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and analytic network process (ANP). To avoid inaccuracies and vagueness in results, the data are manipulated under a fuzzy environment. This study reveals results which show that higher cost and lack of customer acceptance are the essential and most influential barriers in auto parts remanufacturing in an Indian scenario. This study contributes to society by assisting closed loop supply chain players to identify and eliminate the barriers to remanufacturing within the scope of the Indian sector. Finally, this paper provides a brief road map and insights into future research for remanufacturing specifically in an Indian context.
Urbanization and globalization has led to a rapid development in the construction industry. Many strategies have been proposed to improve cost effectiveness in this sector. Over the last decade, cost ...concerns have been balanced with a growing debate on the necessity for sustainable construction practices. Because of depleting resources and environmental concerns, researchers and practitioners have begun to explore sustainable construction strategies. Among these strategies is the selection of sustainable materials which play a vital role in a building׳s environmental footprint. In the UAE in particular, there is an ongoing demand to select the best sustainable construction materials because the industry is growing so rapidly in this nation. Thus, the main intent of this paper is to propose a model to evaluate the best sustainable construction material based on sustainable indicators through a hybrid multi criteria decision making (MCDM) methodology with a specific examination of the UAE. The indicators collected from existing literatures were used in evaluation of sustainable construction materials with the assistance of construction sector-based respondents. The proposed framework was validated with a case study company, and the results were compared to the existing literatures and to feedback from the respondents. Finally, the study concludes with an assessment of its own limitations along with the identification of some useful managerial implications; it sheds some light on future possible enhancements in the theme of sustainable construction in the context of UAE.
Green issues have gained more importance in contemporary globalization. Recent years have seen manufacturing processes understand the green issues due to the social and environmental concerns ...involved. The drivers of green manufacturing, however, have not been thoroughly investigated. Thus, this paper investigates the responsibility of identifying twelve common drivers of green manufacturing from the combined assistance of existing literature, industrial managers, and expert opinion in the relevant field. A questionnaire on these common drivers was circulated among 120 leading firms in south India, and aided by their replies; a pair-wise comparison was made among the drivers. The pair-wise comparison is used as an input data and the drivers were analyzed on its basis. The analysis resorted to the use of a fuzzy Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach. The obtained results are validated by a two-stage sensitivity analysis, namely: (1) using different de-fuzzification methods that are further evaluated through the Spearman coefficient and (2) assigning varying weight to the essential top priority drivers of green manufacturing among all common drivers. This study helps firms to stimulate an essential driver for quick and better adoption of green manufacturing. Finally, the paper concludes with some insight into the future path of green manufacturing in developing countries and an acknowledgment of the study's own limitations.

Rising advancements in manufacturing sectors force manufacturers to rethink and redesign their existing systems in order to cope with the challenges that emerged with globalization and environmental ...concerns. An increase in customer awareness and pressures from stakeholders shifted manufacturers' focus; no longer were financial benefits the primary concern in the contemporary business environment. As a result, many innovative strategies were brought into the realm of manufacturing systems, such as lean, green, agile, and sustainable manufacturing practices. Sustainable manufacturing has been praised in recent years for its significant benefits directed at triple bottom line factors (social, environmental, and financial), but the majority of manufacturing strategies remain limited to either one or two factors. No reliable guidelines exist to guarantee the successful implementation of sustainable manufacturing; available literature fails to explore such a complex research topic. Minding this gap, this study takes the opportunity to analyze and identify effective sustainable manufacturing practices that may help in a specific domain. This study proposes a framework to achieve the research aim in an Indian context, where sustainability issues are especially relevant. Initially, the common sustainable manufacturing practices are collected from literature resources and validated with focus groups. Then, the collected practices are compared with one another with the assistance of case industry decision makers. To analyze the practices, a multi-criteria decision making methodology was adopted, specifically DEMATEL. From the case results, we determine that among 22 common sustainable manufacturing practices, promoting 6R (reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, redesign, and remanufacture) concepts reveals the greatest influence on implementation. Clearly, focusing on 6R concepts will effectively improve sustainable manufacturing implementation in the organization. Finally, this study sheds some light on the future opportunities hidden in this research area by providing contributions towards both scientific and social means.
The integration of sustainable strategies in manufacturing operations has become mandatory in recent years once sustainable development goals (SDGs) were introduced. Recently, several academicians ...have explored different strategies under the context of manufacturing including sustainable manufacturing and circular manufacturing. However, manufacturers struggle to shift towards these recent extensions of sustainable/circular manufacturing practices, because most of them are still not able to fully implement green manufacturing (GM). GM acts as a basic platform for these extended manufacturing practices to promote green transition, and manufacturers face several challenges within its implementation. Over the years, several studies explored the challenges and other related factors to promote GM, but manufacturers remain unclear on how to mitigate these challenges. This study considers two metrics of GM, challenges, and critical success factors (CSF), through which a systematic literature review has been made. Based on the review, a CSF theory-based framework has been developed by which GM adoption challenges were mapped with their corresponding mitigating CSFs of GM. To improve understanding among manufacturers, both the challenges and CSFs have been categorized into different dimensions. This is the first study to map the success factors of GM with adoption challenges of GM; this work permits manufacturers to recognize the exact challenges of GM and to understand how they can be mitigated particularly through selected CSFs. In fact, manufacturers will not need to examine other CSFs. In addition to strengthening the academic research of GM, this study seeks to assist practitioners in their journey of green transition with an in-depth explanation of mitigating challenges through CSFs.

Many developed nations have started to address EOL tire management issues through various strategies and codes of conduct, but because the environment is a global concern shared both by developed and developing nations, this study examines the issue of EOL tire management in India, a highly populated developing country. This paper proposes a framework to analyze the motivating factors of EOL tire management; it is validated in the Indian scenario with the assistance of a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach. Existing literatures are limited to the study of recycling and remanufacturing techniques. This study also provides the interrelationship between drivers and their respective influence with sound managerial implications. Finally, the paper concludes with the most influential driver of EOL tire management among all common drivers. We examine its limitations, and we shed light on the prospects of greater sustainability in EOL tire management in the future.
Due to the rising importance of our global interdependence, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is primarily concerned with social, ethical, and economic decisions, particularly as they relate to ...the selection of suppliers in contemporary supply chains. In this paper, we analyze the importance of seven criteria as a means of selecting the best supplier under CSR environment. Those seven criteria are human rights issues, underage labor, female gender labor, long working hours, pollution, safeguarding mechanisms, and organizational legal responsibilities. We, however, include some relevant sub-criteria as well. These issues are compared and ranked with the combined assistance of several existing literature reviews and by managerial interviews conducted from leaders in the southern region of India. The importance of the criteria and sub-criteria used in the CSR-based supplier selection is identified by the analytical hierarchy process. This paper concludes with a presentation of the rankings and priorities of the proposed seven criteria and establishes a useful method for selecting the best supplier based on CSR.
Mining industries receive significant global attention due to the nature of their environmental and social responsibilities. Although mining industries have many advantages, inappropriate mining ...activities have led to dramatic environment and resource depletion. To achieve a balance of such activities, sustainable practices are a must and should be followed by the industry. Of the various sustainable practices, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) has gained prominence recently. In developed countries, CSR is at an advanced level, but in developing countries – especially in South Asia – CSR is in a preliminary stage, due to both known and unknown reasons. This paper investigates drivers for CSR implementation in the mining industry in India, a developing nation in South Asia. Some studies focused on CSR issues but were limited to industrial perspectives without considering multi-stakeholders. This paper attempts to bridge this gap by analysing CSR drivers from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders, including governmental, media, and societal associations. We propose a model framework, illustrated with a case study from an industrial unit in India, through Fuzzy Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (Fuzzy DEMATEL). Based on these findings, industries can increase their chances of practicing value-added CSR in industrial environments. This study extends the scope of this problem through varying multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) tools and different environments such as grey, fuzzy, and other approaches. The additional drivers can also be validated with statistical work.
