Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are promising absorbers and emitters to enable novel photonic and optoelectronic applications but are also known to severely suffer from low optical quantum ...yields. Here we demonstrate SWCNTs excitons coupled to plasmonic nanocavities reaching deeply into the Purcell regime with FP=234 (average FP=76), near unity quantum yields of 70% (average 41%), and a photon emission rate of 1.7 MHz into the first lens. The measured ultra-narrow exciton linewidth (18 micro eV) implies furthermore generation of indistinguishable single photons from a SWCNT. To demonstrate utility beyond quantum light sources we show that nanocavity-coupled SWCNTs perform as single-molecule thermometers detecting plasmonically induced heat (Delta T=150K) in a unique interplay of excitons, phonons, and plasmons at the nanoscale.
In this paper a new method for enhancement of digital image edge detection using ant colony optimization based on genetic algorithm has been used. In the proposed method first by the series of ...answers has been formed by artificial ants and then formed in a manner i.e. useful for genetic algorithm, then the answers played the role as initial population for genetic algorithm and the next population is made by genetic algorithm. Our method compared with Jing Tian method enjoys higher speed, less processing time and more answer's optimum. Also the proposed method has a better edge than other classical methods (such as sobel, etc).
Little data are available concerning the outcome of rituximab (RTX) therapy in pediatric patients with autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs).
We sought to evaluate safety and efficacy of RTX ...administration in pediatric patients with AIBDs and to assess first-line RTX therapy in pemphigus patients.
AIBD patients consisting of 12 pemphigus patients and a patient with bullous pemphigoid who received RTX before the age of 18 were enrolled. Detailed information regarding patients' outcome after the first RTX cycle was assessed.
The mean age of the patients at RTX infusion was 15 ± 2 years. Six patients in the pemphigus group received RTX as first-line therapy. In pemphigus patients: complete remission (on minimal therapy) was achieved by seven patients, partial remission (on minimal therapy) and complete remission (off therapy) were achieved by three patients and one, respectively. Relapse occurred in nine patients, which were mostly mild. Likewise, the BP patient received RTX with a good clinical response. The observed adverse events were mostly mild infusion reactions and a case of sepsis.
Rituximab is safe and effective in childhood/juvenile patients with AIBDs. Furthermore, RTX can be used as first-line treatment in pediatric patients with pemphigus.
Utilizing a novel microsimulation approach, this study evaluates the impact of fixed and average point-to-point Speed Enforcement Cameras (SEC) on driving safety. Using the SUMO software, agent-based ...models for a 6-km highway without exits or obstacles were created. Telematics data from 93,160 trips were used to determine the desired free-flow speed. A total of 13,860 scenarios were simulated with 30 random seeds. The ratio of unsafe driving (RUD) is the spatial division of the total distance travelled at an unsafe speed by the total travel distance. The study compared different SEC implementations under different road traffic and community behaviours using the Power Model and calculated crash risk changes. Results showed that adding one or two fixed SECs reduced RUD by 0.20% (0.18-0.23) and 0.57% (0.54-0.59), respectively. However, average SECs significantly lowered RUD by 10.97% (10.95-10.99). Furthermore, a 1% increase in telematics enforcement decreased RUD by 0.22% (0.21-0.22). Point-to-point cameras effectively reduced crash risk in all implementation scenarios, with reductions ranging from - 3.44 to - 11.27%, pointing to their superiority as speed enforcement across various scenarios. Our cost-conscious and replicable approach can provide interim assessments of SEC effectiveness, even in low-income countries.
This study reports the synthesis and characterization of poly(ethylene glycol) coated gold@iron oxide core-shell nanoparticles conjugated with folic acid (FA-PEG-Au@IONP). Also, targeted therapeutic ...properties of such a nanocomplex were studied on human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line KB and human breast adenocarcinoma cell line MCF-7 in vitro. The synthesized nanocomplex was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), UV-Vis spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The photothermal effects of nanocomplex on both KB and MCF-7 cell lines were studied. Cell death and apoptosis were evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and flow cytometry using an annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate/propidiumiodide apoptosis detection kit. It was found that nanocomplex is spherical in shape and its size is approximately 60 nm. UV-vis spectrum showed that nanocomplex has appropriate absorption near infrared region. FTIR spectra obtained from nanocomplex before and after conjugation with FA confirmed the formation of folate conjugated nanocomplex. Significant cell lethality was observed for KB (∼62%) and MCF-7 (∼33%) cells following photothermal therapy. Also, it was found that majority of the cell deaths were related to apoptosis process. It can be concluded that, the synthesized nanocomplex is an effective and promising multifunctional nanoplatform for targeted photothermal therapy of cancer.
Abstract Background Program websites are essential resources in the process of residency and fellowship application. We evaluated the information furnished on these resources by Epilepsy fellowship ...programs. The extent of information provided was compared across geographic zones, academic affiliation, and national ranking. Methods A list of Epilepsy fellowship programs was derived from the Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database (FREIDA). Links to program websites were obtained directly from FREIDA or using Google’s search engine. Online data was categorized to reflect program information, education, recruitment, compensation, epilepsy center-specific information, and social media presence. Data points under each category were collected to develop a standardized scoring system. The frequency of criterion present was compared across geographic zones, academic affiliation, and national ranking using parametric and non-parametric statistical tests. Significance was determined at a p-value ≤ 0.05 for all cases. The study utilized IBM SPSS version 28 and Python 3.11.3. Results We analyzed 80 Epilepsy fellowship programs. The most reported feature was the program director’s name and email (100.0%). The least reported features included board pass rates (1.3%), preparatory boot camp (8.8%), and post-fellowship placements (11.3%). Programs were found to be well-represented on X (88.8%), Facebook (81.3%), and Instagram (71.3%). Most (85.0%) of the programs were searchable through Google. The scores for program information, education, recruitment, compensation, epilepsy center-specific information, and social media visibility did not significantly vary based on location, academic affiliation, or rank status. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that despite an online presence, there is much room for improvement in the content available to the applicant. To improve the Match process and attract a roster of well-informed fellows, Epilepsy fellowship programs should furnish program websites with up-to-date information relevant to program information, education, recruitment, compensation, and epilepsy center-specific information.
Background Tumors arising from the duodenal papilla account for approximately 5% of GI neoplasms, but are increasingly identified. Objective To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes in a ...large single-center experience with patients referred for ampullary lesions. Design A retrospective review of the Virginia Mason Medical Center endoscopy and hospital service database. Setting Tertiary referral center. Patients One hundred ninety-three patients referred for ampullary lesions from 1997 to 2007. Interventions Endoscopic management of ampullary lesions. Main Outcome Measurements The relationship of demographic and clinical data with endoscopic treatment and clinical outcomes in these patients. Results One hundred ninety-three patients underwent endoscopy for ampullary lesions. Fifteen juxta-ampullary lesions and 10 normal variants were excluded. Among 168 patients, there were 112 (67%) adenomas, 38 (23%) adenocarcinomas, and 18 (10%) nonadenomatous lesions. There were 88 men and 80 women, with a mean age of 64 years. Clinical presentation included cholestasis/cholangitis (72 patients), abdominal pain (54 patients), incidental/asymptomatic (51 patients), pancreatitis (9 patients), and bleeding (7 patients). Of the 57 patients referred to surgery, 42 were sent directly without papillectomy, and 16 were sent after papillectomy. Papillectomies were performed in 102 patients with adenomatous lesions. The mean tumor size was 2.4 cm (range 0.5-6 cm). The papillectomy complication rate was 21%: mild pancreatitis in 10 (10%) patients, cholangitis in 1, retroperitoneal perforation in 1 (adenocarcinoma), intraperitoneal perforation in 1 (lateral extension), bleeding in 5 (lateral extension in 2 of these 5), and delayed papillary stenosis in 3. Recurrences were seen in 8%. The endoscopic success rate was 84%. Factors affecting success were a smaller adenoma size and the absence of dilated ducts. Conclusions Most ampullary adenomas are amenable to endoscopy. Underlying malignancy and lateral extension may be risk factors for bleeding and perforation. Smaller lesion size and the absence of dilated ducts are factors favorably affecting success.
