Art historians are beginning to note the uncertain character of their field that has been exposed to postmodernist criticism regarding the subjective nature of historical analysis. However, the ...cautious practice of referring to another historian's material to support a theory or interpretation may be actually an effort to create a form of documentation that is inseparable from analysis. For example, historian Walter Benjamin may be credited with interpreting history as a sequence of chance occurrences which would gain meaning at a vantage point in time in which these events are examined.
